We are fussing a lot about the defense one week into free agency. However, we expect to re-sign Carter, even if he might not be ready to start preseason. We also expect to add another safety in free agency and/or the draft. A defensive end in the first 40 picks seems very likely.

IMHO, the resulting defense will likely be significantly better than in 2011. It won't be a top defense, but it is likely to be a young improving, respectable one.

DL We will add Fanene and likely a draftee first rounder (or early second rounder).
We will still have Carter. I expect that we will also add Warren or someone else.
ILB In the 3-4, three ILB's get all the reps. We are in fine shape.
OLB Ninkovich, Scott, Cunningham, Carter
as weak as last year, perhaps Belichick will find another Ninkovich to train
CB Improved (although many disagree)
S Much improved (last year, we just about played without safeties)
This year, we start with Chung, Gregory, Barrety, and a likely addition fa & draftee
This is our weakest position; but it is not the disaster of 2011.

MY EXPECTATIONS
1) Re-sign Carter or equivalent
2) Add some veteran JAG's for DL, OLB, and S depth (could be after the draft)
3) Draft a DE early, perhaps 2.
4) Draft a safety, especially if a free agent isn't added.

BOTTOM LINE
This is NOT a long wish list in the middle of the second week of free agency. This is a young developing defense. I expect this defense to much better in the last half of 2012 compared to the last half of 2011. Of course, this is what counts. I also expect us to be much better in the first half of the year compared to last year; but that is a very low bar indeed.

I don't think Barron, even if he ends up being great, is going to boost the defense too much in year one as a safety. It seems like the last position on the team for a rookie to make a positive impact. I don't know why anyone expects anything at all from Carter at this point in his career coming off significant surgery.

I do, however agree that we are improved on defense for the other reasons you stated.

all they need to do is play much better 2 min defense it all comes down to good coaching and makeing a play with the lead, i would love to see the pats win a 17 to 10 game but thats not going to happen any time soon, if they can play top 15 defense over all and top 5 with 2 min left they can go 19-0

Aside from Rob Ninkovich, alot of question marks.

CB - Improved (although many disagree)
If Ras-I Dowling lives up to his first round draft grade and Devin McCourty returns to his rookie form.

S - Much improved (last year, we just about played without safeties)
Aside from Patrick Chung, alot of question marks.

An upgrade is an upgrade. We had Matthew Slater and whoever the hell else back there last year. Recently you look at guys like Earl Thomas and Eric Berry and they had huge impacts as rookies. Berry was hurt last year but Thomas was still beasting for a pretty decent seahawks D.

If Barron is available then i think he could be a steal. Wouldn't be suprised to see him go to the jests.

The Cowboys, Chargers, and the New York Jesters (home of the Ryan-Tanny-Sanchez 3-Ring Circus) are desperate for safety help.

So who from last year's defense would people say they are 'happy' starting with? Mine would be

Chung
Wilfork
Mayo
Spikes
McCourty
Dowling (if fit)
Arrington (in slot)
Carter (if re-signed)
Ninkovich

The only possible starter I see from our defensive free agent acquisitions is Gregory at FS.

The next bracket are guys from last year who will play a bit but not every down... I think they are good depth players but I wouldn't want them on the field at all times.

Deadrick
Love
Fletcher
Sterling Moore

Lets say we sign Carter, we still need another starting DE, OLB's (maybe 2) and atleast a few defensive backs. If we get 5 decent players in the draft (big ask I know) i don't see why this defense cannot significantly improve...

I think Deaderick and Love came on really strong at the end of the year. I say let the young guys play.

I'd add Sterling Moore to the second bracket

I think Fanene, Scott and maybe Allen will be good depth guys

Can't believe i missed Moore...

Markell Carter is very interesting. He had all the BB measurables at OLB coming out of college except for weight, but during the season he bulked up from 248 to 260ish. He earned practice player of the week a ton of times and is getting paid 300k on the practice squad.

He's a project and you can't count on him but if we don't draft an OLB high he could surprise and start across Ninkovich.

Without any rookies to add into the mix yet, on paper I'd say the defense already looks better if you went with a base 3-4 along the lines of:

DL: Fanene, Wilfork, Deaderick
LB: Ninkovich, Spikes, Mayo, Scott
CB: McCourty, Dowling (Arrington Nickel back)
S: Moore/Gregory, Chung

Looking at that, through the draft I'd like to see a safety and OLB added.

Resign Carter + draft Barron + draft a pass rusher or two = defensive problems solved. (FOR NOW)

Putting Andre Carter on the field & adjusting the rest of the Front 7 accordingly doesn't change your conclusions any. So I agree. :)

If Pryor can stay healthy, he's a good situational inside pass rusher that can hold up against the run. He started the year last season higher on the depth chart than these two (Deadrick was on PUP).

still or Reyes are not going to be good pros imo. I think you can get Reyes in the 3rd or 4th round. Jones is solid. Still is a typical boom or bust player imo. Martin is terrible after watching plenty of his games this past offseason.

Why resign Carter if we're moving to a 3-4?

We had some terrible players in our defensive backfield last season, Molden, Edelman(good as PR/WR), Barrett, Sergio Brown and Ihedigbo.. I hope none of these guys are ever seen on our defense again. Sterling Moore is a great player, one of our best tackling DB's he should challenge Gregory for the 2nd starting safety spot beside chung. We need ateast another 2 DB's (one CB, one safety) in the draft day 1.

Defense has to be better. Addition by subtraction.
