Not really. Brandon Lloyd and Wes Welker are more or less locks to qualify for the 53 man roster. Julian Edelman is the New England Patriots primary punt returner and backup slot receiver to Wes Welker.
Stallworth, Gonzalez, Branch will compete for two roster spots at the wide receiver position. Underwood and Davis are nothing more than training camp fodder. Ochostinko should receive his walking papers to free up salary cap space.
Add a wide receiver in the 2012 NFL draft and a rookie wide receiver will most likely rot on the bench, unless the rookie wide receiver becomes the New England Patriots primary kick returner. Speaking of which, the New England Patriots cut Brandon Tate in lieu of Chad Ochostinko during the 2011 calendar year. When the injuries piled up at the center position, the New England Patriots cut Taylor Price in lieu of Chad Ochostinko to activate Nick McDonald.
I beg to differ. Ochostinko, Underwood, Davis could be cut today and no one will miss them. Does Anthony Gonzalez really have anything left to offer at the wide receiver position?
At end of the day, the five most likely wide receivers, barring injury of course, on the 53 man roster are denoted below:
Welker
Lloyd
Stallworth
Branch
Edelman
