Patriots sign WR Anthony Gonzalez

Didn't understand this signing to be anything more than insurance, but when he's healthy he can play. Hopefully.

When I saw him cut back and avoid 2 Ravens to lateral it to Wayne while getting leveled by a 3rd guy I was pretty impressed. Great athletic play from the start and some great thinking under pressure that got them a TD. Liked it.

Lets hope the kid can stay healthy for a season, I think with Josh McDaniels back we might see the spread offense return to an extent but featuring 2 TE's and 3WR instead of 4/1 or 5/0.

I say sign Pollard, and then do this. :D

This is a fine pickup. I presume that he took a physical.

He is certainly a fine #4 wide receiver. He is even an upgrade form our 2012 #3: Ochocinco.

So, now we have our #1, #3, #5 and #6 wide receivers for 2012.

For now, we also have Ochocinco and Underwood; Branch is unsigned.
=============

And free agency is less than a week old and we still have the draft.
==============

For me, the #1 WR priority is to sign Welker to a long term deal.

He's caught 5 passes in 3 years. He's not a fine #4 receiver. He's not an upgrade from Johnson.
The guy's a throwaway player until he proves otherwise. His contract should mirror that.

Insurance for the loss of welker

doom

My question is what kind of offense was run at Indy? Was it similar to our option based one?

How do you bash this move? Everything to gain, nothing to lose.

The Pats have made mistakes on FA's. What happens if the Pats pass on drafting a WR becaue they think Gonzalez is the answer? Then he lands on IR or is a bust like C.O.

Gonzalez hasnt been healthy is years. Everybody wants to point out his very best season and think thats the player the Pats just signed up.

Do you really think BB's going to look at a guy who's been healthy enough to play just 10 games, and amass 5 catches, in 3 years and say "I'm good there"?

Gonzalez is still young, and if he can stay away from injuries, and regains his form, it will be a steal. Like others said, low risk, high reward.

You ask me that when Edelman and Slater are playing defensive back? BB picked up Josh Barrett hurt in 2010 and he landed right back on IR. Get real.

Are you telling me that BB is infallible?

I'm okay with this depending on the figure, still damaged goods though and not expecting much. Talk of him replacing Deion Branch seems overly ambitious to me, I could see it for Chad Johnson though given his lack of contribution in the first place.

Edelman and Slater were playing defensive back because the starters and backups were either injured or incompetent. That's a completely irrelevant issue to what I asked you.

Are you telling me that BB is infallible?

Given my position on many of BB's moves since 2008, I'm obviously not making that claim.

**** that, I don't want him hitting our players every practice. We'll have no one left by season's end.

They joked about signing and immediately putting him on IR. Therefor he can't hurt anyone.

Potential to be a good signing as a cheap 4th/5th receiving option for the Patriots if he stays healthy.

People need to remember that not everyone has to be a superstar when you sign them but a competent role player who can perform when their number is called.

Come on.
Taking a flyer on a talented player who has had a miserable run of injuries isn't going to alter the strategy of building the roster.

I have not seen ANYONE point to his best season and say that is the player we signed except you. Can you point those posts out to me so I can respond to them?

+1. I think he is a longshot to make the roster. Talented player, but injuries have taken a toll on him. Give him a shot in training camp and see if he can still play & stay healthy.

I think they'll bring Branch back on the cheap and hopefully they can keep one of Branch and Gonzo healthy at any given time. He'll also give some insurance in the slot for Welker. Bring in Lloyd and draft a receiver for competition and they'll be in good shape.

Low risk and high reward signing.

Good upside, but this is not a sure thing at all. It just adds more competition at the position.
