Matt Williamson: Pats will be "really involved" in trying to get Mario Williams

This is clearly just the guy from Scouts Inc. offering his take on what NFCW teams should be doing. We got thrown in to counter the idea that Seattle should persue him because this guy doesn't believe they should while Sando apparently does.

I do have a soft spot for Sando though. He's the guy who blew the whistle on Borges' plagerism...

no thanks....

Re: Matt Williamson: The Pats will be "really involved" in trying to get Mario Willi

They can afford both and still have room to spare.

They may be able to afford both, but I'm not sure about the "room to spare" part. They still need 6-7 starting caliber players, lots of depth throughout the roster, including a backup QB and both of their ST aces.

Re: Matt Williamson: The Pats will be "really involved" in trying to get Mario Willi

He's right. Unlike Julius Peppers and [ahem] AdT and Derrick Burgess, both of whom BB broke the bank for so to speak, Williams has experience playing both DE and OLB. With all the different alignments and subs we are running, having a guy versatile and talented enough to play every down for a change would be a godsend.

And screw trying to find the next McGinest-type via the the draft--even BB doesn't seem to think it's possible. Plugging in an every down OLB/DE with Williams' ability could make this defense dominant immediately. If Williams becomes available, it's a no-brainer for the Pats to take a hard look at him.

Burgess had experience as a DE and OLB too. His problem wasn't fit, though- it was that he just wasn't very good. There's a reason he hasn't played since.

As for Williams, I would absolutely love to have him on the Pats, but not for the money that he's going to get from someone else. He'd have to leave a ton of money on the table, IMO, to be a good signing for us. I'd rather the Pats sign a few $5-6M per year players at positions of need (DE, OLB, S, WR, wherever we end up having need on the OL) than one $16-18M per guy.

And who is Matt Williamson??

A scout. Williamson rarely says anything I find questionable as a scout. Not sure how reliable his contacts are, but as far as knowing the game he's really good.

I don't know the details, but I think the cap really shoots up in 2014. So the Pats would have to kind of suck it up for 2 years if they broke the bank for Williams, because in 2014 there should be a lot of extra space.

Can they work it out for 2 years? I bet they can. The more I think about it, the more it makes sense to make a real run at him. They need him. Badly. They have the opportunity to get him. They have the $$ available.

He would be nice to have, but they don't NEED him. They can use that load of cap money many different ways, quite a few of which would make the overall team better than one player would.

Andy,

You are right with the depth in the draft. and Mario's injury history I would not dump 10M per year into the guy. would rather find them in the draft.

Re: Matt Williamson: The Pats will be "really involved" in trying to get Mario Willi

Williams sounds great, but the injuries are a concern. This is the time of year when BB starts cranking up the DeWayne Robertson Memorial Smokescreen Machine.

Re: Matt Williamson: The Pats will be "really involved" in trying to get Mario Willi

This is a rare situation where obvious need combines with the arguably the best fit in the entire league. When you add in Williams' comments about playing for a great coach and desire to win I think it's pretty easy to see the fit.

This defense is absolutely jammed full of B-level players and has only one A-level player. There is a need up front, and a strong one at that. There is a need for a superstar. There ain't one in the draft, and there sure ain't gonna be one of this calibur in FA for a while to come along. Williams is a rare, rare player who presents once in a generation versatility. More versatile than Peppers, and likely can contribute more to this team than Peppers would have. Mario Williams isn't just another name- he's rare, special, and a perfect fit. The young guys are developing, and the time for the inflection point has come. You want to win championships? Guess what? Championships come down to two or three plays. Go get a goddamned playmaker.

10 mill per year won't even get you a return phone call.

Your preaching to the choir. Some people just don't get it. I mean why would we want someone on this team that has to be accounted for on every down?

If my opinion of Williams were as glowing as yours I may agree. But I think we are better served upgrading across the roster than trying to with one player, and the injury issues concern me a lot.

Do you think there are any outside pass rushers that teams don't account for every play?

Where would you upgrade, though? Nearly every defensive position is set. They need two pieces and depth on offense. Williams can play every position up front in either alignment except 0 (that's six out of seven possible) in addition to outside linebacker. He can also play all of those at an extremely high level, and a lot more economically than a lot of people seem to be imagining.

Excluding his freak torn pec, Williams missed three games out of eighty in his prior five seasons. He doesn't exactly strike me as injury prone.

You're so right about this. The Pats would probably have 4 championships right now if JPP didn't make that great play knocking the ball down on that big 3rd down in the red zone. Brady had Hernandez wide open for a 1st down but an elite defensive playmaker simply made a great play.

Meanwhile the Pats DEs are lining up in the neutral zone and jumping offsides on big 3rd downs.

How long has it been that the masses have been calling for difference makers on defense yet when the time comes and a truly elite difference maker may be available, many won't pull the trigger?

This defense needs an injection of FU to the rest of the league. Put some difference makers on D before O.

I would give up my hypothetical 1st born child to get mario williams for the next 5-6 years. what will u do for the cause? lol

Re: Matt Williamson: The Pats will be "really involved" in trying to get Mario Willi

Pats could have used Julius Peppers the past couple of seasons...and IIRC they did show some interest in signing him.

Sure there's a chance that Mario Williams might turn out to be a FA bust like Adalius Thomas, but I personally think it's still worth a shot.
