Vincent Jackson - Worth The Risk?

I was big on Vincent Jackson coming out of Northern Colorado (my brother went there), but didn't know he had alcohol issues. NOW, I would not touch the guy. Never. He's been arrested 3 times, including 2 DUIs. I'd never spend a nickel on somebody like that. It makes no sense to take the risk, when their are others available that are clean.

I like Bowe but being that I live in SC Alshon Jeffry in the draft would be sweet! He doesn't have much speed but he WILL catch the ball and is a endzone threat! Plaxico #2.

Maybe as close to a Randy Moss as we will see again under Brady's regime.

Yeah, it's unfortunate that the Cardinals locked up Larry Fitzgerald. NOW there is a guy who has it all (including a great attitude).

I think Vincent is a WR that does not come around too often in FA
I doubt the Chargers keep him and he will be one of the top prized offensive players come FA .... Maybe as close to a Randy Moss as we will see again under Brady's regime.

I thought he was an incredible receiver BEFORE he went up against the Pats last season but the way he took over the Chargers offense and almost won that game for them by himself against the Pats makes me think this is a guy we should not pass up if we can afford him.

If he worth the risk considering he could be trouble off the field again?

Seriously, dunces like him surely do not come around too often

2 DUI's

Best season is 68 catches while playing with QB like Rivers in very weather friendly West coast

Held out for money

You gonna pay him $10mill ? because that's what he wants.

Do you trust he is smart enough to read defenses and be trusted by Brady ? I certainly don't.

you guys usually do good with players who may have questionable pasts, so i'd say NE is the perfect place for him

he's had a few drinking issues, but not in over a year

Yeah, but we don't sign them to huge deals in free agency. We get them on one-year deals with minimal risk, generally. If Dillon or Moss hadn't worked out, they would been easy to cut ties with, like Haynesworth was.

that's true, and VJ is all about the money

VJ has talent, but he doesn't play at his full potential every week. you could easily see him get shut down by Revis twice. questionable character too.

if we're gonna go to free agency, I'd rather get Dwayne Bowe. Two years younger, just as much upside, and hasn't had as many injuries as Colston

This guy was a major disappearing act for most of the season with 10 games of 3 or fewer receptions. I would definitely not give him the big money.

Same could be said about Bowe, who also has some really questionable focus and intensity issues not to mention his own 4 gamer in the books for substance (of the performance enhancing variety) abuse. And that bizarre season ending nationally televised non effort on the INT against the Steelers after he called for the ball has to give you pause. I imagine it would be easier than normal to vet him out what with Charlie in the college ranks these days. He'd be a guy whose mental toughness and tenacity I'd be real concerned about in possession of his second contract. Will be interesting to see how far the Chief's extend themselves to retain him. He had one foot out the door when Pioli arrived and it was mostly Haley's fascination with himself as a WR whisperer that saved him heading into and coming out of 2009.

No way.

You always hear that one of the biggest things the Patriots look for in players is a guy who considers football a big priority in his life.

Jackson got a DUI the week of a playoff game. He also managed to get detained by police and his car impounded the day of another playoff game. Phillip Rivers had to actually swing by the scene and pick Jackson up to bring him to the game.

Does that sound like a guy who has football at the top of his priority list?

Agreed…but for a guy who doesn't make his work a priority but still gets 1106yds with an almost 19yd YPC average…imagine what he could do if he bought into the Patriot way and actually CARED.

I hear the Bills may be BIG buyers in the FA market this year having both huge interests in both Mario Williams and Vincent Jackson.

I don't think its possible for them to sign both players, but if they do that will be scary.

Geez, they'd have to give them an ownership stake to get them to leave America's best weather city (SD) and one of the fast growing cities (HOU) who both have a better chance at winning…to come to Buffalo, NY.

I like VJ because he's a big target, but Colston fits the Pats offense like a glove.

Colston is a precise and intelligent route runner with good hands, good attitude and good size. He runs a deep in and drag patterns as well as anyone in football. He loves football. He's the guy I target if the Saints don't tag him.

Brady needs at least one bigger target on the outside. Colston brings that and a whole lot more.

I don't know if he'd go for it. Considering the number of Charger players the Panthers acquired ever since Ron Rivera took over, I would not be surprised to see him end up in Panthers uniform.

I wish the Pats would have picked up Steve Smith before he got talked into staying with the Panthers last year. Such a great player who deserves to win a ring that will likely never be recognized because of the franchise he's been loyal to his entire career. Even if the Panthers get back to a Super Bowl, I doubt it will be before Steve's too old to make a difference.

He would work great in this style offense and as short as he is, he WILL come down with a jump ball. He can also play the slot and block like crazy. Not to mention, he's always been incredibly clutch. I can't remember ever being scrutinized because of a dropped pass in a high pressure game situation.

He may have a loud mouth, but he backs it up and he is one of the few Panthers who has Patriots philosophy built into his work ethic. Always gives 100% each and every game. Regular season. Playoffs. Doesn't matter. Doesn't care about stats even though he's the only Triple Crown receiver since 1992. He's made Cam Newton look amazing from day 1 and never complains about how little credit he gets for it.

Would have loved to see what he could do with a guy like Brady throwing him the ball at least once in his career. I would imagine it wouldn't be much different than Randy Moss other than maybe end up with 1 extra touchdown at the end of the year. He's a master in saving the quarterback's ass;)

Better yet, how would he perform with Gronk, Hernandez and Welker out there. The CB's certainly would not be getting the over the top safety help they are used to receiving if he was a Patriot.

I don't like his antics as much as the next guy. Thought he was lazy but there is no disregarding his route running and his ability to stretch the field. He is an incredible talent that I used to disregard until you actually watch him play a few times. He would be a devastating addition.

I agree with your post…but if you could replace "Colston" with the word "Ochocinco" and change the date of your post back 1 year…wouldn't it remain 100% true?
I just feel like we cannot project any drafted or FA WR into our offense because either they won't get the playbook, be washed up and have lost a step, or just unable to tune into whatever channel Brady/Welker/Branch have their walkie-talkies on.
