For me - it's because they have been against NY teams.

2008 - NYG
2011 - NYJ
2012 - NYG

If any of those were against other teams - it would hurt but would fade. These 3 BIG losses -2 of them in the Super Bowl - coming in 4 years is alot for a diehard fan to take even with all the successes that we have had. It hurts big - plain and simple.

I don't feel the way you do. I really only care about the Jets in this respect, with whom the Patriots have a rivalry. I don't care who they lose to or beat in the SB since, in my mind, all NFC teams are created equal. Beating Carolina is just as sweet as beating the Giants, and vice versa (losing to one of these teams).

Losing to the Jets or Ravens or Steelers or Broncos or Colts, on the other hand, makes me want to puke.

For me, I don't really care so much who we are losing to, it is the WAY we keep losing big games (regular season & post season) the past few years, in such gut wrenching style. Here is a NOT so fond trip down memory lane. It is a kind of theme that just keeps repeating itself the past few years. It is like there is some cruel cosmic force that just keeps kicking us right in gut over and over again.

2006 AFCCG: Leading the entire game, at one point 21-3. No doubt that phantom OPI call against Troy Brown changed that whole complexion of that game, and in IMHO, it was deliberate home cooking. We were about to go up 24-3, or maybe 28-3 (game pretty much over). So, we have to punt, and Manning gets a FG before half, completely changing momentum. But, we get the ball back with less than 3 minutes left, and can't get ONE damn first down to seal the game, leading 34-31. Does any one have any doubt we pound the Bears is SB41, if we win that one? (A little revenge for SB 20 :D). We have to punt, and losing in the final 30 seconds. To me that was as gut wrenching as it gets.

Super Bowl 42: Up 14-10, one stop, is all we need. Alligator hands drops what would have been a sure "pick 6", and seals the game 21-10, completing the perfect season. So, instead, the absoulte most freakish series of plays transpires that could probably never be replicated if you tried a thousand times, and Burress catches a TD with only about 35 seconds left. We lose not only the SB, but a perfect season.

VS. Colts 2008 and 2009, this loss in the end, cost us a playoff berth in 2008. I think we were leading the whole game again, and AGAIN, can't covert ONE first down to seal the game. So, what happens, Manning wins it again over us in the final minute or so.

VS. Denver (2009), I think we lost in OT, with mutiple scoring chances blown all game long.

2010 AFC DP, vs Jets: Well, we did not even show up, no need to elaborate.

SuperBowl 46: Again, chances to put the game away, and our receivers can't hold on to the ball to make one play at a crucial time.

I am sure you can mention others, but above is depressing enough for me. :bricks:

32+ ppg, 13+ wins, MVP candidates etc. Then losing to some average team because we forget how to play our ball. I prefer being the 'boring' team that beat the flashy ones.

Can't forget the fans on and off line who were one catch away from shutting up in each of the last two bowls. My friend from a while back (Indy/Peyton fan) called immediately after the game rubbing it in, praising the Manning family, and digging the grave for NE. I haven't bothered checking other boards yet.

Oh, believe me, Dutch, if you think the Manning worship is bad there, try it here in New Orleans, their home town. These people are unbelievable "Manning sycophants" out here. I guess that is what they were reduced to, cheering for the "media darling local boy" in the SB, seeing that the Saints got knocked out, and thankfully Alabama dismantled their beloved LSU Tigers in the BCS title game.

Sadly Boston always has been and always will play second fiddle to New York. That's a fact.

you'll always have the celtics franchise who is better than the knicks

that's undeniable

Boston:

Super Bowl 2002
Super Bowl 2004
Super Bowl 2005
World Series 2004
World Series 2007
NBA Champs 2008
Stanley Cup Champs 2011

Seven titles in 10 years. A title in all four major sports with only one team in each sport.

New York:

World Series 1996
World Series 1998
World Series 1999
World Series 2000
Super Bowl 2008
World Series 2009
Super Bowl 2012

Seven titles in 17 years. Titles in only two of the four major sports with two teams in each (if you count the Nets).

I don't even think it's a fair comparison, New York is what, 2 or 3 times as large of a market as Boston? "pound for pound" Boston has won the battle if you ask me.

Playoff losses hurt the worst because it's over after, obviously, and being patriots fans, we expect nothing less than a super bowl. We have become spoiled in that regard, anything short of a championship is a failure for Patriots fans, and to be quite honest, I wouldn't have it any other way. Add in the fact that we have lost to New York teams quite a bit recently and yeah, it hurts even worse. BTW, that speech given by the Giants players today made me want to vomit, Eli spewing a bunch of nonsensical garbage.

For me:
2005: loss to Denver sucked, but the Pats played uncharacteristically bad football.
2006: loss to Indy in AFCCG was almost unbearable. We had terrible receivers, by and large, yet we should have owned the Colts in that game. The officiating was horrendous, and it wasn't even debatable. The blatantly bad calls against the Pats regarding DPI & OPI basically gave Manning his 'moment' of slaying his personal dragon. I still think Manning would go down as the a playoff choker if not for the refs that year, and the Pats would have had 4 titles in 6 years. Arguably the greatest dynasty.

2007: Admittedly, if 06 doesn't happen, we might not have seen the 07 season. This loss was the most crushing because none of the Pats seized the moments that could have cemented this team as the GOAT. As a fan, 19-0 would have allowed me to more calmly handle future seasons, since 19-0 is ALL TIME incredible. Eff-you Asante. Rodney, you made your $$$ laying wood, why didn't you crush Tyree despite Asante being primarily at fault there? Terrible loss all the way around.

2009: Disappointed, but that team seemed to be trying to live on the fumes of 07 since 08 was cut short.

2010: I hate the NYJ because of who they are. Brady really started to show his struggles in this game. Given days to throw, he couldn't take what the defense gave him. I felt as though the Pats had a year in which they likely wouldn't win the SB, but they had a shot to get there.

2011: I'm over it a lot more quickly than 07, but this one sucks. The NYG are such loud-mouthed **** talkers, and failing to seize this opportunity just ensures years more of NYG smugness. Strips that didn't bounce our way, fine. Penalties on a fumble that had huge implications, penalties on a 3rd down 4th quarter stop, dropped passes late in the game, safety to start, Mayo blindly jumping in the air when he could have had an easy pick. WTF? So many 'un-Patriot' like mistakes.

It's terrible. I didn't say one word to any of them when the Tigers or Saints lost but I immediately got like 6 emails after the Pats game trash talking. I then had to point out that I'm glad they could have a third tier moral victory after LSU didn't show up for their game and the Saints turned the ball over 5 times before their defense choked.

Well, when I do get any "spygate" crap (which I have to admit is very rare), I just remind them that maybe the league should now investigate that deliberate Fed-Ex'd Pick-6 that Peyton Manning delivered to them, in SB44. To me, that looks more fishy (and plausible) than anything spygate ever could amount to. You talk about shut them up immediately. But, yeh, the anti-Pats sentiment here is astonishing. I guess they don't realize that one of their biggest supporters in SB44 was th Pats' fans. And, I guess some of them don't realize that the Lombardi Trophy won Sunday night, is NOT coming to New Orleans, nor is the MVP award, despite it being Eli's home town.

The Patriots are hated all over so that part isnt surprising. They really get behind the Mannings as if they play for the Saints which is bizarre, especially given the fact that Archie didn't want either of them to go to LSU or play for the Saints. I can't think of a Boston equivalent to that, but a lot of athletes do come from Louisiana. I honestly never get spygate nonsense but if you really want to annoy them next time they complain about the 49ers game and how they lost tell them they sound like Vikings fans in 09, that shuts them right up.

Why those losses have hurt so much, well because the Pats are responsible for the legends that the Mannings have become.

Yep, that is true, if I remember correctly, Archie had NO desire to see either play for LSU, and especially NOT the Saints. And, the way these people are, if you don't genuflect at the altar of the Saints and LSU, you are looked on as a pariah, like you insulted their mothers or something. I am sure you have seen it as well. And, IMHO, they both thought they were better than the likes of LSU or the Saints. But, I digress, I guess, in the end, Latitude & Longitude of your birth trumps everything else, especially if you are going against NE. Like I said, I rarely ever hear anything about spygate either, but you make a great about the comparison of the Vikes in the '09 NFCCG, and their loss to SF. Yep, same exact scenario.

Why these losses hurt me is even if I try and avoid listening to it,the bottom line is the Patriots under Belichick and Brady will go down in history as a team that might have won the Super Bowls they won by cheating in some way.

Had they won EITHER of these last 2 super bowls, that notion would have been put to rest, but people continue to think that without taping a SB walkthrough or using a camera of some device, this team can never win a title without it.

That's bugs me...a lot.

That's why this team NEEDS to at least get one more title while the Coach QB combo is here ad shut the naysayers up once and for all

The Saints have so many bandwagon fans it's unbelievable. Granted we know what that's like with success but that team could barely sell out the stadium pre Katrina unless they had local businesses buy up the remaining tickets and since the Superdome and Saints became a rallying cry for the city after the storm everyone is a freakin uber-fan now and I have people that don't know anything about football talking trash to me because I'm wearing a Patriots hat.

I know that's really why it stings the most. Really it comes down to one or two plays in all 5 games but the naysayers will point to the signals as a reason we made the plays then and don't now. It's stupid because if you look at the overall team record its about the same and we've been to 2 Superbowls post spygate and 3 before it. If Welker and Samuel just catch the ball we're the greatest dynasty of all time.
