I wish as fans (supporters) of the New England Patriots we had a `Patriot Way` - a culture of appreciation and loyalty. I believe for some of us we have this but we are, unfortunately, a silent majority (or perhaps minority, I don't know). I'm from Massachusetts, born and raised, and I know exactly where the hostility towards Patriot players comes when we lose. It doesn't come from Patriot fans aka Football first fans - it comes from Boston sports fans.

It's a mentality I really just despise...

After every loss these people are quick to pack the phone lines of local sports radio, eager to spit their venom at the heart and soul of our beloved football team - Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. They did it after an 18-1 season that was for the most part nothing short of magical. They did it after the Ravens loss when Brady was still rehabilitating an injury. They did it last year after the Patriots went 14-2 with a team largely in a state of rebuilding. They did it after the Giants loss in the regular season. They're doing it now.

I wish they would save their venom for the Boston Garden and Fenway Park. If they want to treat their own sports teams heartlessly after a heart breaking loss they should do it there. The Patriots aren't a Boston team, they're a Foxboro team. It deserves a Foxboro approach and mentality, not a Boston one.

Those of us whose love of sports begins and ends with football season are sick of hearing it.

Tom Brady and Bill Belichick are the heart and soul of the New England Patriots - of New England football. It is through them and only through them that all of us can say as sports fans with a certain pride that we have a very special football team. They have given us more magical moments in ten years than most football organizations get in their entire existence. It is through them that we, as Patriot fans, know we are always in the hunt. It is through them that we can say during any game, no matter how much we may be down, that we are not out of the game and it is through them that we can say it with confidence.

Their victories are our victories and therefore we should accept their defeats as our own, too - not accept victory and eagerly throw them all under the bus or call for all of their heads when we lose. They should have our support in either outcome. I think they've earned it.

I normally hate the Colts but this year I have to appreciate their fans. I envy them, even. They have loyalty. They have Peyton Manning and through a sincere sense of loyalty and appreciation they want to stick with him for what he has done for Indy football rather than throw him aside like yesterday's garbage for a hyped rookie praised as the next big thing.

I hope in 5 years we can say the same for ourselves.

When we're deep into the fourth quarter and down by 10 points, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick make us believe.

There is nothing more you can ask out of a coach and a quarterback. That is the greatest aspect of our Patriots and it is one that is not replaceable - it's something I wouldn't trade for one or even two grinded out Superbowl wins with any other pair. That's the beauty of having the New England Patriots and being a Patriot fan - an ever present reason to believe.

We may not always get the outcome we want every football season, but what the Patriots give us better than any other is the journey to that outcome, whatever it may be. Whether we are with friends and family watching the birth of a new Dynasty on television or driving through a snow storm listening to Gil Santos in an excited state of absolute awe as Brady wraps a 6th touchdown pass around the throat of our rivals, the Patriots, Brady and Belichick, give us a journey through the football season better than any other.

Tom Brady and Bill Belichick are not immortal. These years are not going to last forever. We should be enjoying and appreciating the time we have with them, not throwing them to wolves and hyenas every time they come up short.

Football fans all around the nation wish they had a football organization like our own. It would be great if football organizations all around the nation could look to New England and say "I wish we had fans like them."

Oh jeez......

I wonder if anyone who embraced the 'patriot way' would ever sound like you.

I do believe that way of which you speak requires very high expectations. To be satisfied with whatever ending befalls you is unacceptable.

It's one thing to be disappointed with a loss. It's quite another to have to listen to caller after caller on local sports radio demand the head of arguably the greatest quarterback and head coach in the history of football because of a lost Superbowl. One can be disappointed without also having to be asinine, ungrateful and ignorant.

There are a lot of bitter people out there who lack empathy and understanding. They lash out whenever something doesn't go their way, and are uterly convinced that they can do a better in almost any field with their mighty keyboard and mouse.

Fortunately, not everyone is afflicted by that righteous sense of entitlement. Many of us appreciate what Mr. Kraft and BB have done for this organization. Although we are disappointed in a SB loss, we are appreciative of the effort, toughness and character of this young team and what they have accomplished.

I wanted to say you missed the point but I guess you are the point.

Mr. Madison, what you've just said ... is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

What pinkhat crap!!!!!!

Taking personal shots at any of these guys is out of bounds. Justifiable critique and criticism is 100% appriopriate and that's what 99% of Patriot fans have been doing. Grow up!!!

Exhibit A.

And hear hear PATS16NO! I'm currently enjoying the ignorant bliss of a sports media blackout (this site my only excpetion), so I've mostly missed what others are saying on radio, tv.. Heard about 15 seconds of Rome yesterday...until he mentioned James Harrison's tweet about (I can't bring myself to type it) and I sprang for the "off" button.

I think Aruba should offer free vacations to depressed Pats fans. Maybe just members of this board. Keep guys like Strongside in a separate hotel with likeminded "fans" who can listen to feeds of WEEI and nod in agreement with the grumblers while sipping their whiskey sours. I'll be partying at the Marriott with my shirt off. (I'll spare you the pic.)

also, there is a fact that the sports radio stations throw out occasionally. I don't know the numbers exactly but its along the lines of the callers on sports radio only represent 1 or 2% of the listeners. They are really not a great representaion of how fans feel.

If we had a best new poster of the year award the OP would have it locked up already.

In some ways this team and the perverted misconceptions created by the media about it's philosophies are their own worst enemies. Not winning it all sucks. But that doesn't translate into win it all or you suck and scapegoats deserve to be identified and called out except for those fans drawn to it by the perversion. The frontrunner or bandwagon fan, and this team has way more than the normal share of those. It's the price you pay for winning consistently.

When the fan base was smaller and less entitled patsfans were probably some of the best fans on earth. Since one of them took the team over, not so much. Again, the price you pay for succeeding beyond even your own wildest dreams in what is both a game and a business.

I do think the majority of patsfans still get it. It's just that radio talk shows and internet message boards draw a disproportional representation of the fanbase from the lower and higher end of their core demographic, the 18-35 year old male sports consumer and charter members of the historic Boston based fellowship of the miserable. And they are goaded on by a longstanding NE sports media mentality that purports to be intellectually superior to it's peers who are cast as comparative local sport toadies and encourages this fan base daily to not fall into the trap less you end up looking like the dreaded unintelligent homer. They condition this fan base to equate criticism with intelligence, when often times nothing could be farther from the truth. Criticism for it's own sake is just contrarianism.

Robert and Bill and even Tom will always stive to win 'em all. That's why they win so many of them. But fans who pervert that into something more have truly missed the boat. The ultimate goal here is not to win them all, these folks are smart enough to know that isn't a realistic goal and Robert knows it wouldn't even be in this team or this leagues best interest for that to happen. The goal is to remain in consistent contention thru thick and thin and if you accomplish that the journey is always worthwhile and memorable. As Tommy said in the postgame even as he grappled with the devastation that the immediate aftermath of any loss entails, he would rather get this far and lose than not get there at all. And this organization has done that now half of the time he's been its franchise QB and Bill his HC and one third of the time Robert has been it's owner. In a 32 team league operated in a manner designed to foster competitive parity and in an era that incorporates unrestricted free agency and operation under a salary cap that is rock hard in comparison to other sports, it doesn't get any more successful than this...

And if you can't appreciate that, you're not even a disgruntled patsfan so much as you're a disgruntled entitled pats consumer. Sadly in this football era the majority of NFL football's base is not the core football fan but the broader based and more demanding football consumer. With the exception of the chronic malcontent or cardholding fellowship member, core fans appreciate the journey. They can rattle off seminal moments in even losing seasons they will always treasure. Kind of like owners and coaches and players who realize that effort that goes into it and every team and season is an entity unto itself never to be experienced again. Just to be appreciated and remembered for whatever it was. Robert and Bill have both waxed poetic in the aftermath of a superbowl loss about what an outstanding team this was to be associated with and why. If you can't grasp that and acknowledge it and be at piece with it and move on, your loss.

yes mo.....you are a better fan due to the manner in which you convince yourself that others are lesser fans.

there is not a bigger feminine hygiene product than you

Regarding that last cute little quip, you need to take a long look in the mirror. There's a difference between being "satisfied with whatever ending befalls you" and expressing appreciation for the opportunity to enjoy prospective endings that exceed all expectations. You apparently are incapable of gratefulness.

"The fellowship of the miserable..." Correct?

I wish people would let people morn this loss in however they feel they need too and stop acting like there is some protocol and correct process for only True Fans to act.

Get over yourselves

There are many people saying bad things here an calling people names beacuse they are different. That should stop.

I think the point the OP is making is that we should be grateful of what we have as fans, because there will come a time when we may not be winning, may not have HoF Coach or QB & players - and in those times we will look back wishing for those times when we were getting to the SB, or competing for the playoffs.

As in life, you don't know what you have until it's gone.

After 08 I was devastated. But at the same time I remembered all the good times I had watching us win in a season where my entire family became Pats fans also (I'm from the UK -I was the only one watching the NFL in my household at the time). I remember staying up late to watch the Ravens game thinking my parents had gone to sleep - only to find that at 3AM they were next door watching it too!

This season has been great because we went from a team that everyone thought wouldn't do anything to a team that got to the SB. Yes, we lost. And it hurts, just like in 08. But I will remember the journey which got us to that point, which I enjoyed greatly.

There are always a good core who understand and are patient with what they're seeing, pay attention to those.

Outside of those fans are the bipolar fickles. You win and life's great, you lose and it's fire the coach, I'm off to hang myself. Then they'll be given airtime because these views will attract attention, listeners and will create debate/argument.

Nature of the beast.

you could not be more wrong.

I've been appreciative since they moved to foxboro......they've been 10 min away for most of my life. I'e gone to games wheneve I've wanted to whther I've had season tickets or not. I've seen many of the players over the years and have seen a few of them in my parents house. much more connected to players in the distant past than now..... I've seen this team be successful more than just recently..... at the end of the day, all you have is a box score and some other things. its just a game and nothing more.

if you make it out to be something more than just entertainment and a game, then that's your problem

We have had a great deal more success than the vast majority of other NFL teams and the same players who are getting trashed are the ones who brought us to the Superbowl. An awful lot of people here don't want to look at an entire body of work but want to pick and choose a given play and then make personal attacks on the players. Criticize the way someone played if it makes you feel better but some of the attacks are just over the top and uncalled for.
Am I disappointed? Of course but I'm not going to trash the guys who took us to the big game; our season would have ended on January 1st if not for them.
