Gronk sheds walking boot

Meh...how serious can his injury be if they let him return onto the field against the Ravens? He'll be ready to go.

If your ankle twists outward, it's a high ankle sprain. Doesn't say how severe it is, though.

All true. The key to severity is not so much about how the ankle turned, but how much torque was put on his lower leg. Rolling the ankle inward (foot outward) and rotating the lower leg at the same time puts pressure on the ligaments holding the 2 leg bones together.

As per the picture above, Gronk definitely suffered an eversion which likely tore the medial ligaments connecting his leg bone to his ankle/foot. Again, don't know how severe this tearing was but it is pretty much the same as tearing lateral ligaments on the outside of the ankle on a "normal" sprain.

The high ankle sprain results from how much his lower leg rotated at the same time. After watching the replay (available on nfl.com), it did look like there was some rotation involved...so I would say there is a good possibility that the ligaments holding the tibia/fibula together were stressed, making a high ankle sprain diagnosis accurate. However, there didn't seem to be much rotation and the ankle released pretty quickly...so that rotational stress may have been pretty minimal.

Based on observational evidence post-injury, I would say the medial sprain was reasonably severe, though not close to a complete tear. As for the high ankle sprain, it looks like it might be relatively minor. If true, that would mean that Gronk would have a hard time cutting (particularly to his left) but shouldn't be in too much pain when digging in to block or in straight line running movements or jumping. If the medial sprain wasn't as severe as it looked or if he has inhuman healing capabilities, he may be close to 100% by Sunday.

LOL! Tony Mazz just said that the fact that Gronk was out of the boot and the Patriots were talking about it is proof that Gronk's ankle is worse than we fear because the Pats are trying too hard to say he is ok.

Haha, I just saw that too. If the team didn't say a word about Gronk, he would say that they're being secretive about his ankle which indicates a devastating injury as well. You can never win with Felger and Mazz.

Well it kind of makes sense what they are saying to be honest. I don't see how Gronk can even be remotely be close to 100%. Hell it is a minor miracle that he is not on crutches.

Unless his injury has been overstated.

You're one lucky fella to have seen the x-rays, MRI, inspected the ankle and interviewed Gronk. Thanks, doc.

I can tell you from experience that a sprain is often an injury that you can play through that game and then have to deal with for weeks afterwards. I've finished games playing with sprains that had me on crutches afterwards. I'm sure others here can tell similar stories.

The body is an amazing thing, both in its resilience and in its frailty.

He is right its clearly a high ankle sprain you could see that by when it happened. Those arent easy to come back from this quick. So your sarcasm wasnt needed. Thanks Carrot top :p

This. There hasn't been one official word on his ankle, just his dad stating it was a high ankle sprain, which we already knew from watching.

The team hasn't said a word. Everything is speculation. The "experts" and "doctors" are talking doomsdays scenarios because it is what the networks asked them to talk about, not because they have seen MRI's.

There is just as big of a chance that it is minor as there is a chance it will hamper him. It's the medias job to make big stories out of something that might not even be a story.

Exactly, but the point is, Gronk is not on crutches. There is no question that he could have potentially not been able to walk, but I don't see why all the negativity. Every time we've seen Gronk since the injury, he has yet to even limp. Yet, we are constantly being painted a picture of a guy crawling onto the field before his ankle suddenly snaps on the first play.

High ankle sprains range in severity so much so that you can be fully recovered from 3-4 days to several months. We don't know how bad his is. He's also still just a kid, his body will recover a lot faster from this injury than someone even a few years older.

What if Gronk is double jointed?does and ankle
have a joint?

Didn't his ankle roll inward?

You know, at first I thought that Bernard Pollard was dirty. Looking at that pic, I'm starting to think he's actually just a horrible tackler.

Anyway, I don't think he'll be severely limited. Athletes can play through pain, and be extremely effective, they'll just pay for it later. Fortunately, Gronk will have a nice long vacation after this game, so he doesn't have to worry about slowing down his recovery.

Plus, honestly, I don't believe that they would have put him out there last Sunday if he was hurt enough to be a non-factor in the Super Bowl.

It wasn't a horrible tackle or a dirty hit. Nobody has figured out how to tackle Gronkowski yet. Honestly, Gronk getting hurt is his own fault. That tackle was a case of him being too big and strong (Well, I guess that isn't really his own fault, blame his parents!), Pollard couldn't bring him down, and the way he hung on for dear life just caused him to land on his ankle.

Just because someone rolls an ankle in a certain direction doesn't mean they're going to have a certain injury. If it was that easy you wouldn't have trainers or DR.s No one can say by watching how Gronks ankle rolled with close to any certainty exactly the injury or severity. There are a lot of moving parts in that area.
