This is NOT the Giants Defense we faced in SBXLII. They still get after the quarterback but not as much as they did in '07. Just a perspective....I'm worried, but all this talk about how the Giants defense is comparable to the Ravens....not even close. Different ballpark entirely. We're talking about a team that cleaned a weak wild card team's clock, played an incredible game, and then came up big against a very inept offense. Their defense can cause problems for Brady, and I think our defense will have a very hard time stopping Manning from scoring....but on the side of our strength (offense), this is a very different D we're facing than the one from 2007 that shocked our team and ruined a month of my life.

The G-Men gave up 328yds to SF, which possesses a mediocre O at best. 328 yds! To Alex Smith and Co.

Meanwhile, against a much better D than NYG, the Pats punted only twice and rang up 25 First Downs on the Ravens despite Brady giving them the ball twice. They allowed 1 sack against the Ravens who tied with - guess who - the Giants for 3rd in the league with 48 sacks. All those sacks and yet the Giants only finished 2 spots ahead of the Pats in pass yds allowed/game. Oh yeah, we ran the ball on Baltimore who finished 2nd in rush yds allowed/game, the Giants allow 30 more rush yds/game. JPP, meet BJGE.

The SB is easy to dissect. If the Pats protect Brady like they did so well against the Ravens and Broncos, and TB throws no INTs, the Pats will hang 35+ on the Giants. Probably more like 45.

Their offense is obviously much better though. It's going to be a dog fight and we cant get down early in this game. I do have faith in our line protecting better then in 07 especially with Waters in there but I don't think we hold them under 20.

I'm hoping we show more of a commitment to the run this game than we did against Baltimore. Smith had a completion percentage under 50% and the 49ers still rushed for 150 yards. We cant just let them sit back and rush Brady all day which is another reason not getting behind early is crucial.

Yeah another thing people don't seem to be talking about is the way Brady plays in domes. Look at his stats, he's phenomenal on turf.

I mean, who can tell how this game will go. Brady makes stupid throws sometimes, so does Eli. Either defense is capable of making a game changing play, disastrous or positive, every time the ball is snapped. Hard to say anyone has a real advantage, but the matchup between us and the Giants D is MUCH different than it was in '07.

yes and no......I think they had health issues for most of the season but are healthy now. their LB's simply are not as good as they were then

the difference here will be that the pats OL has been cutting through the who's who of sack artists through out the playoffs. (miller/dumervil, suggs) these guys are no different.

in 2007, the pats were not prepared for the giants game plan. pressure simply does not mean the same thing when you're throwing to TE's and slot guys as compared to trying to hit moss on a go.

the 2 offenses are familiar with each others defense. adding nicks and bradshaw to the giants helps them, but the pats defense has mitigated the effect of better RB's and there's only one ball out there.

the giants have lived by the long ball......manning attempted roughly 100 throws of 20 yards or more....by comparison, this years pats threw less than 50 and the 2007 pats threw around 60.....put a man on hicks and cruz, and have the safeties deeper. the giants are dead last rushing the ball anyway, and 7 or 6 in the box will work as the giants OL is going to be the weakest unit the pats have faced in the playoffs..

once again the end result will come down to who wins the trenches

I mean eventually Eli has to start throwing picks on those deep balls right? I've never seen a QB throw up so many jump balls that the receivers come down with. That one against Green Bay at the end of the half was just ridiculous.

He trusts his receivers to make a play, and they usually do. Brady wasn't that different when he has had outstanding wideouts; he would throw to Moss in all kinds of coverage.

I'm more scared of Eli than their defense. I think this game is very simple...if we capitalize on the 2-3 times Eli throws it up for grabs, we win. If we don't turn him over, he will eat us alive with those receivers and we probably won't win.

Nicks, Cruz, and Manningham are talented receivers, no question. they arent Randy friggin Moss.

We tried to force the ball to Moss one too many times in Superbowl 42, especially on the last drive, so maybe it will reverse this time, I dunno. I don't have enough faith in the secondary. Wilfork and Anderson need to have monster games.

Yeah and if the question is, do I trust Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz to make a play over Sterling Moore and Edelman/Bodden.....well, ugh. The Giants are going to let the ball fly, probably try to work the sidelines and find gaps in the zone. Pats blow downfield coverage, see: Flacco's overthrow of Torrey Smith.

I feel like pressure on Eli is needed this game....The front seven is going to have to have a banner day working on that OL.

I think we'll be gameplanning more for downfield coverage this game whereas against the Ravens it was all about stopping the run. The Giants line sucks so I think we'll be dropping more into coverage.

I think you have to take into account how crazy offenses were this year when doing the whole defense things, if you take in these factors, you will see that the Giants might not be too different stats wise when you compare the seasons.

We will need to stop Osi and JPP from getting in backfield Tuck too.

Need to work on their weakness in linebacker coverage on the pass.

I would like some wr & RB screens as well mixed with the run to take pressure off.
Beat them with their own agressiveness. Maybe Faulk will get some PT on Screens.

I really belive a middle screen once or twice early would take the starch out of their pass rush.

ON D we will play it safe with two deep safeties and make Eli throw in front of protection and hopefully in tighter coverage.

As stated it will be winner of turnover battle that will get the win!!!

Ahh, this is where we have to exploit the Giants biggest weakness IMO - their offensive line. So far in the playoffs they've given up a league leading 8 sacks and have given up by far the most QB hits at 24. Their center boothe, LT Will beatty, RT mckenzie and LG david diehl can be pushed back. J

In contrast the pats oline has only given up 1 Sack and 5 QB hits in the playoffs.

2007 post season:

TB: 14 points, 271 yards, 3 turnovers, sacks 1 for 5 yards
DAL: 17 points, 336 yards, 1 turnover, sacks 2 for 19 yards
GB: 20 points, 264 yards, 2 turnovers, sacks 2 for 8 yards
NE: 14 points, 274 yards, 1 turnover, sacks 5 for 37yards

AVG: 16.25 points, 286.25, 1.75 TO, 2.25 sacks for 17.25 yards.

2011 post season:

ATL: 2 points, 247 yards, 0 turnovers, 2 sacks for 16 yards
GB: 20 points, 388 yards, 4 turnovers, 4 sacks for 23 yards
SF: 17 points, 328 yards, 2 turnovers, 3 sacks for 18 yards

AVG: 13 points, 321 yards, 2 turnovers, 3 sacks for 19 yards

I think you're fooling yourself if you think this defense isn't a formidable foe. If the Patriots execute, hold on to the ball and win the battle at the line of scrimmage they'll win. But lets be real. That's not an easy task. The Giants like the Patriots defense had a ton of injuries to contend with during the regular season. I think what they are doing now is more relevant to both teams chances.

Our pass rush is based on Tuck - Osi - JPP. Osi hasn't been here most of the season and Tuck was hampered wtih injury so much for most of this year that it was like he hasn't been there. I'm telling you, u can't look at stats from a time period long ago - it doesn't tell the story.

Personally, i think our defense is better this year - or at least has more talent to be better. HArd to say they are better, unless we win in two weeks.

IF you break it down position by position, 2011-2012 team has more studs.

DEs: JPP is in the running for defensive MVP so he cancels out Strahan on the season. We still have Osi and Tuck

DTs: give me Bernard, Canty, and Joseph over Fred Robbins, Jay Alford, and a young Barry Cofield. Also mix in Tollefson for us who can play DT/DE

MLB: 2007, we were def better off with Pierce compared to Blackburn, but Blackburn has been overachieving this year.

OLBs: Boley and Kiwi over Reggie Torbor and Kawika Mitchell EVERY TIME.

CBs: Webby/Ross/Prince vs Webby/Ross/Madison i'd say its a push.

Saftey: No contest, give me Rolle and Phillips over Gibril Wilson and James Butler
