Right now they are blacked out on Direct TV. They have to come to an agreement soon or people who have it might be blacked out from the Super Bowl or will have to use over air antenna. How will bars that use direct tv respond this week and the beginning of the next week.

Isn't it on NBC? My NBC is channel 10 on directv.

The Superbowl will be broadcast on NBC. It's a national game. There won't be any black-outs..

That's not what he means. He isn't talking about the type of blackout we see when a team doesn't sell out. He is saying that DirecTV does not currently carry WHDH Channel 7, which is the NBC affiliate in Boston. So while WHDH will be showing the Super Bowl that won't help you if your cable or satellite provider doesn't carry that station which, right now, is the case with DirecTV.

WHDH is probably being beligerent because they knew that come February, DirecTV customers will be pretty mad if they don't get the Super Bowl - even if the Pats weren't in it. Now that the Pats are in it, the powers that be at WHDH must be laughing themselves silly.

We've been complaining to Directv for two weeks now about this problem.
They don't seem close to solving it - give a lame excuse - we understand your frustration - and that's it. They'd better get this straightened out soon. We've already threatened to go back to Comcast; don't get Fios where we are.

Sunbeam who owns WHDH has the same deal with their Fox station in Miami where they don't allow DirecTV to broadcast the station. They lifted the ban for DirecTV yesterday in Miami for the game because they feared looking like the bad guys in this dispute. So if DirecTV and Sunbeam don't have an agreement in two weeks, there is a good chance that they will let DirecTV broadcast the Super Bowl and then immediately go back to a blackout.

I don't know if is DirecTV or Sunbeam Communications who owns WHDH. DirecTV makes these deals all over the country and only Sunbeam have refused to make a deal. Grant Fox came close to going dark for the same reason, but a 11th hour deal was struck.

I am wondering how long before NBC steps in and makes Sunbeam to make a deal (or Fox since this dispute is hurting them in Miami or The CW because 56 is backed out too). This blackout is hurting their ratings.

Except they caved in Miami and let DirecTV show the NFC title game yesterday.

They have two weeks to figure this out. I don't miss channel 7 but if they don't figure this out I will be upset. Yes I can buy a HD antenna but I don't feel like spending the money because Sunbeam Communications is being greedy.

Ok guys, I need help. I need an antenna for my tv. Both of them are digital tvs. One is a sharp liquid crystal and the other is a hitachi 50v500. Will any HD antenna work with both? I'm not a high tech girl, and I don't want to waste money on the wrong thing.
I might as well be prepared for the worst. Any suggestions?

As an antenna-tv viewer, a couple of shopping tips:

1. There is no such thing as an "HD antenna." Antennas are antennas, don't let your decision be shaped by whether the marketers slapped the letters HD on it to make it sound special.

2. Antenna specs are not very informative, trust user reviews more.

3. If you're purchasing specifically to catch one signal like WHDH, look online for info about that signal vis a vis your location. You might be pleasantly surprised. I live inside Rt. 128 and get perfect HD reception for WHDH with this ten-buck antenna:
Amazon.com: RCA ANT1050 Digital Flat Passive Ultra-Slim-Profile Antenna with Enhanced Reception (Black): Electronics

I went thru this same BS a year and a half ago when Directv was in a dispute with Versus. Here I was paying for Directv's NHL center ice package and any Bruins game broadcast on Versus during that time, I could not watch. Luckily they resolved the dispute a few months into the hockey season. But the only losers in these disputes is the customers.

Thank you so much. This is very good advice. :)

Maybe we should all start e-mailing NBC instead of Directv. It's ridiculous that we are all paying for this station and it has been dark for two weeks already, and it will be dark for the Superbowl unless somebody does something.

Maybe I am being naive but I am confident that there is no way that the SB is blacked out. There will be too many people from the fans to the advertisements who will be up in arms. If nothing else I believe NBC will lift its ban just for the game.

That is what will happen. Sunbeam already did it this weekend as I posted. They can't change course now that they did it in Miami. They will definitely look like the bad guys in all this when they lifted the ban in Miami where they had no dog in the NFC Championship fight other than the NYer retirees who migrate to FL. No way do they not broadcast the Super Bowl at this point.

It's just - who the heck wants to take the chance? I am actually going to the game, but I have to have my Mom (a huge Pats fans) sit for me for the weekend. I don't want to be worried that she can't watch the game because some cable tv knuckleheads can't work something out. I hope you're right, and I hope they announce PDQ that they are going to do this, and not wait until the last second.

Go here and check your station and home location and best antenna types.

AntennaWeb

I'm a EE and your TV type is not the issue
For years I watched 1080 HDTV from Sudbury MA over the air via an old, old TV antenna. Better picture than via cable where they screw with the bandwidth. I'd go back to antenna and drop the cable garbage but I'm out of range in NH now.

Well, I'm in NH (03819) and antenna works fine. I have a UHF and a VHF in my attic, combine the signals with a cm-7777 and feed the whole house.
