Official Pats-Broncos postgame thread

With the Broncos coming in on short rest after an emotional win, I wanted to see the Pats come out in the hurry-up and wear down that D from the get-go. I got what I asked for and then some. What an awesome performance by the offense. The byproduct of the offense scoring at will was also forcing the ill-equipped Broncos to air the ball out to catch up. Of course it didn't help Tebow that the D came to play like in no other game this year. Fourteen or fifteen negative plays? That's unbelievable. Other thoughts:

- The Broncos did a good job on Gronk in the December game, only to get eaten alive by Hernandez. Seems like this time they played them both more straight up and still got killed by them both. Matchup nightmares, these two.

- I don't care if Vollmer is a better run blocker than Solder. The Pats' bread-and-butter is throwing the ball and I like Solder in at RT for that job. He and Light had a great game the other night, keeping Miller and Dumerville away from Brady. More of that and nobody is stopping this offense.

- The Pats D pulled things together in the December game after switching to a 3-4, so obviously they were starting the game in that formation. That Denver had not even the slightest answer for it in two games speaks volumes on Denver's coaching.

I hope the Pats continue the no-huddle starts against Baltimore (and beyond... :crossesfingers: ) to get those defenders huffing and puffing as soon as possible. The Pats have looked their best all season when doing so and have looked lethargic at times when they come out huddling after each play. Knocking Baltimore back on its heels is key, minimizing Ray Rice's influence on the game and forcing it into Flacco's hands. The 2009 playoff game was a script on how everything that could go wrong did: Ray Rice running wild, turning the ball over and giving Baltimore short fields, getting down big to that D, letting Flacco (4-for-10 that day) off the hook. No way that happens again. Not with this Pats team.

Regards,
Chris

Great comment. I agree with everything but the Solder over Vollmer comment.

If Suggs rushes from the Right side of the offense and he does that few times a game, I rather have Vollmer over Solder. Solder has had a great season but his weakness is the inside rush. I don't want that douche to touch Brady.

I do think, if Vollmer is active, that they will split his snaps with Solder.

I'll still take my chances with Solder over Vollmer for any kind of pass protection, but I just want a clean pocket for Brady no matter who is lining up at RT.

The bigger worry to me, is when Suggs lines up over Light. Light has had some serious problems handling Suggs coming off the edge. In the '09 playoff game, Suggs forced and recovered a fumble by beating Light on the outside.

I think if Vollmer is healthy, we're going to see the patriots utilize both Vollmer and Solder at the RT spot - if it looks like Matt Light can't handle Suggs, I would expect to see Belichick stick Vollmer at RT and put Solder in as a blocking TE next to Light. Even if Suggs flips sides, all we have to do is motion Solder over there. Suggs is great but as long as the staff trusts both tackles to handle Jarrett Johnson 1-on-1, we might be able to negate Suggs.

forget 2009

the pats had to start edelman, aiken, and chris baker......the ravens could do whatever they wanted on defense. the pats weren't getting the ball to moss

Please do not Bring up bench warmer Vollmer's name until next year....He's not needed in the line-up if Light and Solder are healthy. Nate Solder is one of the Best picks of the 2011 Draft...a super duper Offensive Tackle.

What painful line-up that was no hands Aiken and no speed Baker. The more i think about it this will be a Blowout! Some of teh Ravens better Defesive player's ie ....Suggs and Lewis are two years older too.

Just to be clear, I think Solder is tremendous, and I think he was an outstanding pick for the patriots. I also agree with you, in that if Light is handling Suggs no problem, I want Solder at RT.

However, if Light is having trouble, and the coaching staff is comfortable with putting the other OT (it doesn't have to be Vollmer, I just like him better than Cannon for this job if he's finally healthy) 1-on-1 with Johnson on the other side, then part of what makes Solder so valuable is his ability to slide over and work as a blocking TE to support Light. That's all I'm saying.
