That's good, now where is Welker money? Outperformed all other receivers the last few years, plus if you want to bring in a FA WR this looks bad to the rest of the league. IMHO

sweet, now if only he can start avoiding injury, and playing like a patrick willis, ill be VERY happy

It's interesting when you look at the head to head statistics just how overblown the Mayo versus Willis negative comparison is.

Mayo is elite. Deal with it.

The fact that they haven't reached a deal yet likely means there is a fairly large gap between the two sides. Fortunately that's what the franchise tag was invented for.

The fact that they haven't reached a deal yet means that there is a gap between the two sides. I don't know why anyone would guess at how large the gap is.

I agree that the franchise tag for a year or two could work for the pats.

Another thing to remember is that Welker might well have chosen to wait, so that he could prove that 2010 isn't the "new normal."

I thought that I recalled Welker saying that he didn't want to have any negotiating of any sort going on during the season. Due to the lockout teams could not contact players nor could they sign contracts all summer long. When it ended teams had to sign rookies, undrafted free agents, re-sign players who had become free agents, sign free agents from other teams, and at the very same time commence training camp in a year in which they had no OTAs.

Is it really that much of a surprise that Welker was not, and has not yet been extended?

Didn't we just go through all this angst for no reason with Brady?

This extension is great news. Mayo is our best and most consistent linebacker. Good to have him locked up long term!

Now, how about a deal for Mr. Welker?

I'm amazed that Mayo comes back from injury so quickly. Twice he's had MCL tears and been back within the month. That's no joke.

If he doesn't want to negotiate during the season then that's different.

But I'm surprised they're letting the most productive receiver in football reach free agency, where other teams can throw gobs of money at him.

1) I expect Welker to be extended before the beginning of free agency.

2) This is really a non-issue for at least a couple of years, since the team can use the franchise tag on him.

3) No one else is going to have the opportunity to throw gobs of money at Welker.

It reflects the new TV contract revenues..... and increase in salary cap.

Exactly. Nice player but not the impact guy we thought we were getting.
Wes Welker must be fuming and I don't blame him.

Mind blowing. Mayo gets Pat Willis money for a contact expiring after next season, while Welker remains unsigned in the final year of his deal.

Does this mean the Pats front office is using the Mayo contract as cover against another fusillade of "they don't pay" claims, while they prepare to franchise or lowball Welker?

But in Patriot fashion it averages out to $8.9M per over 6 years since it folded in the last remaining season of his rookie deal and it may be even more cap friendly since some of whatever he got in signing bonus could still be amortized into 2011.

Still it now makes him the second highest paid player by average on the roster, behind Brady which will always remain the case but ahead of Mankins and Wilfork. Welker will slide into second place once he's tagged, but it remains to be seen where he is slotted if they get an extension done. My guess is he wants to be in range of Mankins and Wilfork on a shorter term deal in guaranteed money and average and they want him below that range. So they may be willing to pay him $1.5M more on the franchise tag pay as you go method believing he is a self motivated self starter and he won't contemplate a holdout.
