What do you think happens with Brian Hoyer?

It's not out of the question that Hoyer could stay as a longer term backup (getting a pay increase) and Mallett gets traded. Mallett's trade value will be up solely by not getting in personal trouble this season (assuming nothing happens between now and then).

After Luck, RGIII and Barkley it's not a strong QB draft and no-one after those three can touch Mallett's upside or the value of him having been with the Patriots for a year.

I would expect to tender Hoyer at the #2 level and trade him for somewhat less than that if we trade him.

If we keep Hoyer I would expect the Patriots phone to be ringing once the top three QB have gone with Mallett being the subject.

My suspicion is that we will tender Hoyer at the 2nd round level and that no one will want him at that price. We could tender him higher, but then he'll happy to sign.

I agree that if we trade anyone, it will be for a 2013 draft choice. I would expect this to happen immediately after the draft.

Personally, I would keep all three quarterbacks. Quarterbacks do indeed get injured in this league. Houston is still getting to the playoffs because their 3rd stringer can play. I have always thought that a 3rd quarterback was worth a roster spot.

This guy would look MAGNIFICENT in a Patriots uniform!

I agree with Cowerd's comments today, that teams in cold weather cities should be careful about drafting So. Cal. QBs. and that Landry Jones is not worthy of a first rd, pick. In Brian Hoyer they have a QB that is proven himself in cold weather.

Now back to oringinal thought, Hoyer, BJGE & 2nd rd. pick for Cleveland's 2nd 1st rd. pick. Their pick around #22 minus our 2nd rd. pick around #62, leaves around 500 pts. Now that means Cleveland gets a QB & RB for 2 3rd rd. picks. Or if it makes you happier Hoyer for a 4th & BJGE for a second. With our 2nd rd. pick Cleveland can move up & get Justin Blackmon WR.

I tried to come up with a common sense solution for both teams & one that would benefit both teams. I'm not a GM,, never played one on tv, but am a great couch potato in front of a tv.

If we were to draft any QB in the Draft I wanted it to be Stanzi. I would still love to see him here.

Yeah, I agree with this. Hoyer would have to get the Pats at least a 2nd round pick in a trade before I'd be willing to part with him. Mallett, on the other hand, I think could be traded as soon as this offseason for a 2013 1st. Not only does it follow the "1 year later, 1 round higher" rule (2011 3rd=2012 2nd=2013 1st), but he's not the typical 3rd round pick, either.

And I really think a team like the Browns could benefit a lot by using their two 2012 picks on Richardson and Floyd, and then trading their 2013 1st for Mallett. That gives them a complete overhaul of their skill positions in one offseason, with their 2nd round pick to use on defense or OL or something. Most other teams have at least a solid WR or RB, so they would be in position to grab the other in the 1st and then trade their 2013 1st for Mallett.

There’s no reason it can’t still happen, if we trade Hoyer for loot we can use some of it to trade for Stanzi and pocket the difference. Let’s just hope KC stays conservative and not play him this season as opposed to them throwing him in for the remainder of the season and he pulls a TFB.

I could see BB showcasing Mallet during the preseason next year and when waiting for a QB injury on another team and bleeding some poor team in a trade.

Good stuff.

I'd like to "feature" BOTH back up QB's in Week 17 ~ assuming we can afford to do so ~ and trade both...IF, indeed, we get proper Value for both.

There is a VERY strong Case for Mallet not only being tradeable one year after his Pick ~ an obviously rare occurance ~ but being worth an EARLY 2nd Rounder AND Change...and you have MADE it, sir.

There IS a unique Opportunity, here...

With Chaos ~ Reconstruction ~ reigning supreme in KC, an unusual and extraordinary Opportunity to extract a Gem at Discount...may QUITE possibly be in the offing...

Stanzi is Special.

And while there are no less that four QB's in this Draft Class who intrigue me, all of them COMBINED do not intrigue HALF as much as Ricky Stanzi, all on his own.

I don't think Mallet needs to be showcased. Other than the unique Cam Knewton (spelling intentional), Mallet was the best QB in the draft. The likes of Ponder and Dalton can't throw at all compared to Mallet who dropped solely due to rumors of drug use. The further he gets from those rumors the more his value goes up whether or not he ever sees the field. Teams know he can throw like virtually no other. Once the big three are gone, Mallet should be attractive being a year away from the rumors and having a year of watching Brady on the field and in the meeting room.

If I was the Pats GM here is what I would do:

1) Place a 1st round RFA tender on Hoyer.
2) Politely inquire with Hoyer's agent if he would be willing to sign a two tiered contract: Tier 1 is the good back-up contract 3 years 5 million dollars with a 1.5 million dollar signing bonus. Tier 2 is playing time and performance incentive laden contract --- for instance if Hoyer plays in 40% of snaps and performs at better than average NFL QB stat rates then on the first day of the following league year he gets a $10 million dollar roster bonus --- it is a contract designed to force the Patriots to let Hoyer get his big pay day if he proves that he is a legit NFL starter.

3) Politely listen to teams that are interested in Hoyer but don't want to pay a 1st rounder to get him. Unless there are serious conditional picks involved (ie a 2012 2nd and a conditional 2013 4th that could escalate to a 2nd under "reasonable circumstances" and a 1st under ridiculous performance levels), politely say no.

4) Enjoy the fact that at the most important position on the team, you have extreme confidence in your depth and if Hoyer signs a contract similar to that in point #2, you still have a very nice bargaining chip if Mallet continues to mature and improve as a QB.

There's been an extremely loud silence concerning Mallett, I would think that a year under the coach least likely to put up with any nonsense would do quite a bit to increase his value.

I'm praying that Barkley stays in school which would leave a QB desperate team even more likely to make a deal for Mallett.

I would not trade Mallet or Hoyer unless we needed cap room. Although if one had to go it should be Hoyer.

Yes but after a year in our system, he also wears the baggage of being a New England "system" QB. That is going to put off some teams.

I think if BB showcases him in the preseason, he will excel, and to some team in desperate need of a QB, he will be very appealing.

I'm not saying we will get what Cincy got for Plamer, but BB should be able to get an attractive package for him.

I think that Mallett is a superior QB than Hoyer, especially going forward. Year after year, we've seen what happens to teams who lose thier starter and have no real back-up.

Certainly the Pats are going to tender Hoyer, I might give him a second round tender, just in case another tema wants to bite. But most likley he will be an attractive "Plan B" candidate for any number of teams, espeically ones that will be running a Patriot like offense (KC, where ever McDaniels ends up).

If you can get someone to pony up a second or thrid rounder for Hoyer, I say trade him. Mallett was a steal in the 3rd round, he has had a year to learn and should be ready to go. He has everything you looking for in a QB, and now he has that TFB chip on his shoulder from sliding in the draft.

I could see that with Hoyer, who never really lit it up in college but has displayed competence in NE, but why would holding a clipboard in NE suddenly negate all of Mallett's skill and ability he's shown up to this point?

Everyone said he had first round talent and there's hasn't been a peep from him under one the coach last likely to put up with nonsense.

If the Pats want to get anything for Hoyer they must give him a second-round tender.

Hoyer's future depends on one thing

The development of mallett

With the decision of Matt Barkley to stay at USC, what value does Mallett have? If as I've seen argued, Mallett rates as a better QB than Tannehill or Landry Jones, and bearing in mind that Mallett has a years experience working with an NFL offense which draft QB's don't, would he be worth a first round pick to another team? And would you want to take it if he did?

I think if the Redskins, and yes even the Dolphins, offered their first for him, I'd be very tempted.

Mallett for Redskins 2013 #1 is a really nice deal for both sides. Mallett would be a good QB for Shannahan who loves to throw deep and although Mallett isn't mobile, he can throw off the rollout like Shannahan likes. The Skins could keep their #1 this year and we'd have our two #1s yet again.

Alternately for the Skins, Tannehill would be a good pick in the second round, he's a nice Shannahan fit but Mallett is the better prospect and has learned from the best for a year.

The fact that Belichick and Shannahan have a good relationship doesn't hurt matters at all.
