He's an RFA next season; since the Pats didn't draft him, they have to tender him at the second-round level in order to get any compensation for him.

Personally, I think that Hoyer signs the tender (it'd pay him more than he earned the last three seasons combined), and then gets traded for about a fourth-round pick (which, combined with three years of not having to worry about the backup QB slot, is pretty good value for an UDFA).

i dont think there are to many teams running the pats system that needs a QB they may end up giveing him up for a 4th or 5th on Darft day if not they will pay him 4 or 5 million to be a Career backup

It makes no sense to actually keep both Hoyer and Mallet as back ups to Brady. One has to go after this season, and Hoyer makes the most sense. Mallet has the talent to be a franchise QB. He has more value and should be kept unless some team is willing to give you a high 2nd or above, and I don't think that will happen.

You take what you can get for Hoyer, and wish him well. They got more than they should have expected from an UDFA QB. Hopefully he'll get a shot at playing a full game at the end of the season if not to showcase him, then to keep Brady safe.

Unless they start show casing him a bit more I can't see another team offering a draft pick. I like Hoyer though, having watched him at MSU and briefly here the kid has some serious mental toughness.

I'll see your concern and raise you Charlie Whitehurst:

The Seahawks swapped the 40th pick in the second round with San Diego's 60th pick and also will send the Chargers a third-round pick in the 2011 draft.

Whitehurst, a restricted free agent with third-round compensation, has had only four NFL snaps and has not thrown a pass in a regular-season game. The Clemson product signed his one-year restricted tender Wednesday, which facilitated the trade, after deciding he preferred to play in Seattle instead of Arizona.

I think we can get much more than a 4th or 5th. I'm thinking the right offer to the right team might secure us a lower 2nd rd pick. With all the building up of Hoyer by Mike Lombardi and a little bundling magic, how about Cleveland's second 1st rd pick for Hoyer, Law Firm & our 3rd rd pick. They get their QB, RB ( Peyton Hillis is gone) & a 3rd rd pick.

I agree with SBPATSFAN, showcasing him would be to our advantage. I always wanted a sportswriter to ask TB, if his reluctance to leave a game may cost the team a draft pick that could win him another SB.

For those of you who would say, that's still more than we could get for Hoyer & BJGE, then change the 3rd rd pick for our 2nd round pick. We trade Clevelands 1st into 2013 & get at least a 2nd rd pick this year. So we wait a year to get paid for Hoyer & BJGE. We need added picks in 2013.

I have no idea what we could get for a 1st rd pick around the 17-19 range, that is trading the 1st into 2013, just a 2nd?

It depends on how desperate the team is to make the trade, and how valuable the future pick is expected to be.

As an example: the Pats got NO's 2012 1 and 2011 2 for #28; in 2007, for #28 as well, they got a 2008 1 and 2007 4 from SF.

What you do with Hoyer depends more on readiness of Mallet than anything else. Hoyer hasn't had the chance to play so there is not going to be any team willing to pay him or give a draft pick for him. I think he realizes he's got the best job in football for a guy of his skills and stays for a 2-year deal at little money.

Hoyer wants to start and BJGE will want more money than we should pay, with Welker, Mayo & others who are more important to the team. If we go with one less QB & RB we can carry a third tight end & another backup lineman. Mallet should be ready to backup TB & BB has been singing his praises. If we go with 4 RBs, we have them already, Vereen, Ridley, Woodhead & Kettani when he comes back from active duty. ( I love veterans )

Cleveland has needs & we can fll them, QB that's learned from TB & a thousand yard runner that doesn't fumble or make waves. IMHO it's a perfect fit.

Cleveland has 2 first rounders to fill those needs at qb and rb. They are 4-9. Quite possibly lose out and pick 4-5. Pencil Barkley or RGIII in there or a slight trade up. Another team say Washington selects whomever Cleveland doesn't. Who needs qb's then? Arizona and Seattle traded for unproven youngsters. Kolb and Whitehurst. Neither are doing the job. They aren't going that route again. Miami needs a qb. You think their fanbase/management clamoring for star power wants Hoyer? Nope. Most poor teams have young quarterbacks; Minny - Ponder, St.l - Bradford, Jax - Gabbert, Carolina - Newton, TB - Freeman. I seriously doubt we get anything higher than a 4-5 for Hoyer.

I can not see any team paying anything for Hoyer.

Cleveland is in great position to get a Landry Jones in the draft.

Although the Cardinal fans are pushing hard for Jones. They are disgruntled with Kolb.

I tend to agree with Michael Lombardi on this one ( on his assessment of Hoyer). Landry Jones at best looks like this years Blaine Gabbert. On average I don't know how many starting QBs come out each year, but I'd guess this year it's three, Luck, Griffen & the kid from USC.

Out of all the backup QBs Kolb looked the worst, Can't beat out McNabb, Vick.

People jumped on Flynn, but look at the tools he has in comparison to Hoyer. Granted a larger sampling of Hoyer would be nice, but TB isn't big on letting that happen.

The way I layed out the trade, Hoyer, BJGE & say our 2nd, the risk factor would be minimal. I'm convinced Hoyer will be a starter with some team next year

Whatever happens - i think we are better Trading into the future with Hoyer. We may get a 2013 2nd, as opposed to a 2012 3rd...

I think it would be a huge mistake for Jones to declare for the 2012 draft. His stock is going down fast after his horrible performances since the injury to Ryan Broyles. At the moment I think he is the 5th QB on the board behind the obvious 3 and probably Ryan Tennehill. I think if he declares this year he would be lucky to be a 1st rounder. I think he should stay at Oklahoma, rebuild and aim to be the #1 pick in 2013 because I don't think he is ready for the NFL. I think something like the Whitehurst trade where we swap 2nds and get a 3rd would be a fair trade.

In terms of Hoyers trade value, I think the teams that could be in play for him are KC, Seattle, Denver and maybe Cleveland. Luck is going #1, and Barkley and RG3 will go to Washington and Miami (barring any major trade ups or suprises like Jacksonville giving up on Gabbert already). If those teams are looking to pick up a QB, they have to decide if they want to spend a 1st on Tannehill (or Jones), or would they rather trade a 2nd or 3rd for someone like Hoyer. With Pioli in KC, Haley possibly gone and Cassel owed $5.25mil next year, I could see them taking a shot at Hoyer. And we have also seen Seattle throw away picks for a guy thats never played a meaningful snap in the NFL so we can't count them out. So I think Hoyer does have some value, and I don't think a 2nd or 3rd is out of the question, especially if we can show him off in the next few weeks.

One final thing to consider is the Peyton Manning situation. Do the Colts cut him, trade him or sit Luck for a few years. I hope the Colts hold on to him because that would mean one less QB on the market, but if he is available then that could also decrease Hoyer's value.

Also consider that Brees is a free agent. Lots of rumbling by the Jets fans that they want the team to sign Brees, who would be a great fit in the New York offense.

Regardless, if Brees leaves New Orleans, wouldn;t Manning be a perfect replacement?

Heard on Sirius radio that they project that Washington would trade whatever it took to pry #1 from Indy, so they can get Luck.

That would be great for Indy's future but I don't know the Redskins would do that. There doesn't look to be a great drop off from Luck to Barkley and RGIII looks to be a real good prospect for the future. Sit tight, lose out and the 'Skins are perfectly placed to pick up a fine QB and keep their picks.

I could see Hoyer having some value in St.Louis as insurance for an injury prone Bradford. Josh McDaniels would be the Pats connection there.

Conditional 2013 pick I think 4th-5th rounder.

Rather keep him and trade Mallett if that's all they'd get for Hoyer.

No way in hell New Orleans lets Brees leave. That's what they have the franchise tag for.

My suspicion is that we will tender Hoyer at the 2nd round level and that no one will want him at that price. We could tender him higher, but then he'll happy to sign.

I agree that if we trade anyone, it will be for a 2013 draft choice. I would expect this to happen immediately after the draft.

Personally, I would keep all three quarterbacks. Quarterbacks do indeed get injured in this league. Houston is still getting to the playoffs because their 3rd stringer can play. I have always thought that a 3rd quarterback was worth a roster spot.
