Are you getting nervous about Devin McCourty?

He's been lousy in man coverage and better in zone. He is what he is, for this year. If he doesn't show the coaches some signs of potential improvement, we'll see BB spend another first or second round draft pick for a CB this offseason.

I think we could see that anyway Deus (not really, but maybe something in the first 3 rounds is certainly not out of the question).

It's a ritual these days, unless they'd make a nice move in FA at the position not named Duane Starks.

I know he is a corner and not a Safety but Devin reminds me of Eugene Wilson....A promising rookie who faded away after a year of good play.....it's early to say,but he could be that type of player,a one year wonder.

Meh i hope not...really...the one thing on D i was counting on and looking forward to was McCourty. I just can't believe how much he has been struggling this year. How the hell does that even happen? A promising rookie like that looking nowhere near as good in his 2nd year. Christ...

I know it's not fair to judge on this yr alone, but I honestly can say that I felt better with E.Wilson out there at safety than I do with McCourty as a CB.

I know it sounds ridiculous.

McCourty has obviously not had a good season. I wonder if there is something (besides the shoulder injury) that has been bothering him all season that has gone undisclosed to the public.

If not, he has completely lost his confidence. You don't go from Pro-Bowler to Ricky Reynolds overnight.

I know this was his first game back from injury..but man..he is no where close to what he was last year. I really hope last year wasn't a fluke..he NEEDS a big game before the playoffs..if not..not confident with him at all...

He looks like Darius Butler this year after looking like the second coming of Ty Law last season. M2M or zone, he did it all last year including shutting down some of the NFLs best WRs.

I am much more concerned about the LB's

as long as they have this group, the secondary will be a revolving door

First of all...Hello!!! My first post....Live in Wyoming but have been a LONG time PATS FAN from the Parcells' Days...anyway....

Since I only have my wife to bounce frustrations off of...and btw she is a hard-core PATS and Brady fan:D also...I just had to get on the forum officially and ask HOW LONG McCourty will continue to play???? Just watching the game you can see he is out of position, gets beat, doesn't look for the ball, and is constantly missing tackles....He cost the PATS at least 14 points today....It seems Belichick has benched and even released many players in the past for much less egregious play....I have to question the coaches decision to continue to start him.....

MCCOURTY MUST GO!!!

There...I said it (to someone other than my wife), and feel much better.

Wow, still hot under the collar even though it's 5 below here and snowing!!!

BB wont get rid of McCourty after only his 2nd season. If year 3 looks like year 2 (thus far) then the odds change and all bets are off.

Ty Law seems to think that McCourty has lost his confidence and that his poor play is all mental.

I think at some point you have to start questioning the coaching of players like, McCourty, Butler and to a lesser extent Wheatly all regressed going into their second year and I guess we can add Cunningham into this mix. I think its a fair question and the cutting of Merriweather and Sanders and to see the safety position in the state it is. I know they are winning but I certainly don't feel good about there chances in the playoffs.

People forget how bad Ty Law looked in 2000 and the early part of 2001. He struggled when Belichick asked him to change his game. And he was a seasoned veteran. McCourty could be having similar growing pains.

I've been saying this for a couple of years now......what draft picks were developed into players? either they show up playing ou tof the box, or they wind up getting cut

what players has actually won a job rather than being injected into the lineup based on need?

If McCourty gets benched its probably over for him. Has a captain ever been benched for poor play? I can't see him recovering from that mentally.

i just can't see who they would bench him for lol i have been saying all year he has not been playing good but Antwaun Molden and Nate Jones are not sending him to the bench any time soon

i don't think so IMO he is a two deep cover CB who need that big hiting FS over top ( Brandon Meriweather ) so WR's dont try to go inside on him because no WR is going to beat him in a foot race but if WR's know they are going to get hit and hit hard if they go inside they wont try it

The drop-off in his play is stunning. What's so troubling is that we thought the Pats had some young quality building blocks on D with Mayo, Chung and McCourty. All three seem to be injury prone and stuck in neutral in terms of career development.

Devin McCourty is not Great he's just a better than aveage CB. BB has proven that he can get by with CB's in that mold. Make no mistake about it McCourty is still better than Kyle Arrington.

Usually a football player will get better if he stays in the same system. I think alot of the difficulties that we are seeing in all of the defensive players might have more to do with a change in defensive philosophy, than anything else. If you KNOW the system, then you are comfrotable in it. lets face it, an abbreviated off-season, and then a switch to the 4-3. Players being moved in and out of the line-up, it has been diffucult.

The Pats need some stability on defense. They need to a) get healthy, and b) field the same defense a few games in a row. Lets face it the defense on the field yesterday, had four or five new starters than the defense from last week.

McCourtey-in, Adams-out
Slater-in, Endelman-out
Kokofococopuffs in, White/Guyton-out

Is this the week the Flectcher, Chung, and Spikes come back? then Spikes goes to the middle, Mayo goes to the outside.

At this point, with all the injuries and bad draft choices/signings/cuts, best you can hope for is this:

Carter, Vince, Love, Anderson/Deaderick
Mayo, Spikes, Ninkovich/Fletcher
McCourtey, Arrington
Chung, Ihedigbo

Look the defense is not going to be a cohesive unit until they at the very least play a few consecutive games as one unit. With all the roster changes and shuffling, who knows who is playing and in a team defensive scheme like the Pats, you have to do your job, BUT if the guy next to you was signed yesterday or a WR, you are going to naturally be worried about him and your play is going to suffer.

I thought that Vince had a great game yesterday. Everybody else, meh....

Re: Mccourty..are you getting nervous?

He sucks. I don't care if its "just" a sophomore slump...stop playing him sophomore year!!!

It's unfortunate because McCourty had been improving after the rough start up until his shoulder injury.

Of course, nobody is going to remember that now that he's been deemed a bust.

If there was improvement it was very gradual. He was still playing poorly.

If McCourty is truly better than Arrington, than why this year, did opposing teams QBs throw the ball in Devin's direction and avoid Kyle?

There is a reason why you are the most thrown to corner in the league, teams know you are not playing well and will test it.
