OT: Couple of Week 10 Observations

Have a couple of thoughts from last night’s games. Would be interested to hear other people's views:

Denver

Do people think that this style of play with 2 completed passes and a QB who is more of a running back is here to stay with Denver ? I’m not a great follower of other teams, only really know what the Pats are up to but I’m struggling to remember a team who played this way. Will this current Denver attack be seen in the Wildcat mode i.e. a novelty which teams will eventually shut down. Are teams simply going to stuff the run and dare Tebow to beat them with his arm ? From Orton who was airing it out every week to Tebow who makes 2 completions. Bizarre. I suppose it’s all about winning but it must be strange to watch for Denver fans. As an aside is this run and rarely pass style more common in the College game ?

Time Outs

At the end of the Giants-49’rs game the ball went back to San Francisco with 30 seconds left. Giants only had two time outs so the game was over and we were into knees. Despite this the Giants took both remaining time outs. This appeared to achieve absolutely nothing other than make the game last a minute longer. Is there any game reason why you take time outs when the game is over. Left me baffled.

One last thing. Watching the Giants game I still struggle to witness Manning heaving a ball down the sidelines into an opposing CB’s gloves without thinking back to you know who and you know when. Think I’ll always have flashbacks when watching the G-Men until Manning retires :bricks:

2 potential and not mutually exclusive reasons for taking those time-outs.

1) The coach is a douche.

2) More likely, it is a very low probability play as center-QB exchanges can go wrong, so it is a hope for a fumble, recovery, clock-stoppage for change of possession and one or two offensive plays to attempt a very low probability come-back. Since you can't carry time-outs between games, might as well use them if you are losing by less than a touchdown.

Fair enough. Still think it's so unlikely it's almost just wasting time. Out of interest have the Pats ever fumbled on a kneel down ? Are there any high profile instances of it happening ?

It just happened last monday night in the KC/SD game, Rivers took the snap to take a knee in the middle of the hash marks to set up a game winning field goal & fumbled the snap.

Since he needed to take the snap and move to the middle of the field, he still needed to execute a play. Not the same as taking the snap and immediately taking a knee, but still no excuse for that horrible exchange.

The victory formation was created because of a fumbled snap of a team trying to run out the clock. I can't recall it happening since that formation started.

Good 'ole Herm Edwards was Johnny on the Spot with that scoop and run for the TD. He played to win the game.

The Tebow phenomenon is due to selective memory and lack of critical thinking. In Tebow's 5 starts, he has beaten a Miami team that was still free falling, an Oakland team completely messed up at QB and a KC team that just can't score. He lost to a SD team that has trouble getting out of its own way and a Lions team that has come crashing back down to earth. Tebow only brings 2 things...he doesn't turn the ball over and he is a running threat in the red zone. That's it.

As for Goober Jr...I'm simply amazed at how many times he throws downfield while ducking pressure. He should be picked 3-4 times a game based on ill-advised throws. Luckiest QB on the planet.

Speaking of QBs, the Pats remaining schedule may have been blown wide open:
1) Cassel has a right hand injury that required a cast after the game
2) Vick has cracked ribs
3) Painter
4) Not sure who the Redskins throw out week-2-week
5) Tebow
6) Matt Moore

That what stands between the Pats and the rematch with Fitzgerald at the Razor. This after going through a recent run of Romo, Roethlisberger and Goober Jr. If the DBs need to recover from injuries, this isn't a bad time to do it.
