The Importance Or Nonimportance Of Spikes

very possible he's being phased out, he's more of a 2 down thumper than anything else. Maybe they want to trade him. Him and brace seem to be people without positions in the new aggressive 4-3...

Except he's the middle linebacker...

spikes is a little slow for 4-3 and brace is a positive slug at penetrating. So I don't think Brace is here much longer.

People need to throw the notion of the 40 out the window.. At an event last year, Floyd Reese made a point that 40 times don't hold as much weight as some might think. Floyd stated "the 40 time is the fastest that player will ever run in his career".

Spikes has really good instincts, something you can't teach.. He's showed early on he has a nose for the ball

Brace not being here much longer? Maybe but its not because he doesn't have talent.. He just can't stay healthy.. When healthy, he can play DT and be part of our rotation, making a contribution.. I remember at the game last year against the Vikings, Brace held the line against the C and RG when AP going for it on 4th and goal..

He plays the part.. just needs to stay healthy..
This isn't butler or wheatley

the bottom line is that for the salary spikes is being paid, it would be ridiculous to toss aside the kind of football we all saw him play last year. he brings a ton of depth. so if he's a bit of a dope, big deal.

Not only that, but didn't he have a really good time in the 10 yard short dash or something like that? Basically, he doesn't have top end speed, but he has a quick first step and good instincts which are way more important when trying to fill gaps.

Guyton is not a backup to Spikes, their roles are totally different.

In addition to that, Guyton consistently played more snaps than Spikes. If one of them is a backup, its Spikes.

Great point Synovia. I think many here forget that.

Of course that may have had something to do with his limited role during a rookie campaign too, so we'll have to see moving forward. I certainly expect more playing time this yr from Spikes, if healthy of course.

Guyton obviously is our sub-package guy, as he is faster and can defend the pass better, but I do expect the gap to be lessened somewhat, and I don't think it's unreasonable to think that Spikes will receive more reps.

Of course, Guyton may continue to receive the bulk of the time too--depending on the front/formation/scheme that BB employs. I would expect it to be closer to 50/50 than last yr, but that's just my personal opinion.

We haven't seen Spikes for awhile. The rumor is that he does not have a serious injury. So, the question is how well-positioned are we without his presence.

Obviuosly, we have roles for Mayo, Fletcher and Guyton.

The open question is the seriousness of the depth issue. If the the 3 ILB's all have specific roles, it seems that we have no real backups for these roles.

Spikes was the Past best LB in 2010. He led all LBs on the team with defensive stops (a play that results in 1 yard gain or less). BB's decision to start Guyton over him in the playoffs was disastrous.

Re-Focused: Divisional Round, Jets at Patriots | ProFootballFocus.com

The Patriots had far more rookies on the field, and probably should have had more snaps for some of them. The always impressive Brandon Spikes (+1.2) was limited to just nine snaps, though that was enough to make two tackles (just one less than Gary Guyton, -2.1)

PFF Secret Superstar: Brandon Spikes

Spikes definitely excels against the run, but that isn’t necessarily to say that he struggles against the pass. His overall coverage grade was +2.7, with two passes defensed and a red zone interception against the Jets so there were bright spots in the 119 coverage snaps he saw. The Patriots don’t aim to use Spikes in passing situations, but he has shown himself as a passable option if needed. With that said, don’t expect to see him covering anyone man-to-man anytime soon.

The fact that Spikes’ grade is so high in such a limited number of snaps highlights how well he has played when he has been on the field. The important caveat being when he is on the field. His aforementioned off-the-field troubles remain a concern and could result in 1) Spikes not being a secret for the wrong reasons or 2) him becoming a player for a team that doesn’t have Bill Belichick as the head coach.

Patriots’ fans should hope that he gets it straightened out because early indications are that he is a Superstar in the making.

Spikes better LB than MAYO in 2010?

Statements like that can get you put on Ignore, not that I've ever done that.

Tackles aren't everything.

Mayo might have a breakout season playing the weakside on the 4-3, but in his career as a 3-4 ILB, he's been a liability in coverage and gets frequently walled off by OL on running plays.

Prior to 2011, Mayo has been a poor man's Patrick Willis.

Not surprise. Spikes just looks like he is just messing with people on Twitter. I have long suspected it, we will all see in week 1. They saw what he brought to practice during the first week and just knew what they had. #Powwwww

why is there so much 4-3 talk. Did Belichick confirm that we're running a 4-3?

We've seen a lot of 4-3 in the first two preseason games, or at least the 2-4 nickel... though IMO when guys like Moore, Cunningham, etc have their hand down, they're DL, not LB to me, so that's still a four man front.

they'd say that even if he was about to cut waived for bad behavior.

But hopefully its true.

Stay away from the Twitter machine folks. Its turning everyone into a bunch of negative nellies.

No, he wasn't. He wasn't even close.

Really?

Moreover, Spikes made more impact plays than Mayo, when Brandon was on the field.

I'm not saying Mayo "sucks" I just think he's locally overrated because of his tackle numbers. So far I like what I've seen from Jarod in the preseason. He's a great blitzer and could have a career season at WOLB.

If Spikes doesn't get with the program and isn't part of this team, we lose a potential powerhouse at MLB.

If anyone hates PFF for whatever reason, here's another opinion...

Losing Spikes would be a major loss for the D.
