Personally I am very hopeful for Cannon. Re-sign Mankins and draft a C next year in round 2 or 3.

I am not as keen to ditch Koppen as some others here. While I acknowledge he isn't as physically gifted as we'd like, I think of him a lot like I thought of Jason Varitek for a while: A physically limited technician who can be relied on to not screw up.

I found it extremely annoying that in the playoff game, Koppen would slide to his left and help out a All Pro Guard instead of a sub player in Connelly...esp since Connelly was getting run over by Shaun Ellis. Koppen did this over and over and over and over and over.....again.
Koppen, while flawless in shot gun snaps and reg snaps, is a big liability when it comes to dealing with 3-4 NTs and 4-3 0/1tech DT's. I remember him getting owned a few times by some Bengals DT.

You named three all pro-centers. There's plenty more that aren't very good and never make it.

If you don't count Mike Pouncey as a C(I don't), the first C went in the 6th round.

Last year, 2010, there were two C drafted before the 5th round(6 overall).

2009, I count 4 centers in each of the first 4 rounds. Name one without looking. Hard right.

2008, 1 center before round round 4. 5 overall. Name the first team to take a C. Bet you can't.

2007, 7 centers, two pretty good, one pro bowler. Both went in the second round.

I don't feel like going back any further, but over the last 4 drafts prior to this one, 22 centers were selected. Of that, 2 pro bowlers(Pouncey, Kalil). I believe there's only 3 starters(Statele sp? also from 07). Not a great track record for C's. I bet if you went back and counted, there's maybe 5 starters from 4 years.

Compare that with the 08 draft(because that's the one I'm on), there's 7 OT in the FIRST round alone. There's 2 pro bowlers by themselves, 6 starters.

First team to take a C in 08, the Colts, who had Jeff Saturday. Go figure.

A few things.
You missed Eric Wood who is the starting center in Buffalo. JD Walton from Denver. Alex Mack of the Browns. Max Unger of the Seahawks. Kyle Cook of the Bengals.

You discounted any center who was moved to guard such as Leroy Harris of the Titans or Mike Pollack of the Colts.

You also overlook that there are less positions at center available around the league than at OT. Not to mention less turnover. It's very rare that you get a starting center who isn't with a team for less than 5 years..

Wow, nicely done! Maybe notable that all of them were I-AA players? Perhaps the guys who would play center at a major college program end up at LT at lower levels.

There probably are a similar number of FCS and lower centers who are NFL centers: for example, see Brad Meester, Eugene Amano, and Brandon Fusco.

Though I think I have to add Joe Berger of the Miami Dolphins as a former college tackle now playing center. Still, 4 to 3 is a pretty even split.

Connolly is only keeping the space warm for Cannon I believe by mid year he will take over a physically imposing guard with great feet , I usually save certain articles after most drafts this is one from one of the most respected football writers out there Rick Gosselin:

TCU offensive tackle Marcus Cannon was projected as a very high second-round pick throughout this draft process. But in mid-April it was discovered he had a treatable form of lymphoma that would require chemotherapy. That triggered a slide down draft boards.

MOD EDIT: Please do not post entire articles per Ian's directive(see sticky). Just post a short quote from the article and a link. thanks

I don't expect Cannon to be on the field this season.

in all honesty im already in love with this guy. sometimes i think people tend to forget that football players are just human beings and the tend to think just because there athletic they will be fine. in cannons case he went through chemo and i have seen people close to me like my mom, aunt, and grand father go through that and man does it take a lot out of you. ive heard numerous people say that its the worst thing to deal with. whether or not he turns into a star its unimportant because he got the most humbling thing any one could get. not that im saying he wont be great, i think he will. but for all the publicity the pats get for picking up bad guys, they dont get enough for picking up a guy like cannon. its things like this that make me proud to cheer for the patriots because they see past the physical and look to the size of the heart. i might speak for only myself when i say this but i would take 22 rudys over 22 lebrons any day of the week.

I think Cannon will be going through WAY too much to make it onto the field this year. I don't think we drafted him with the thought of him playing right away this year. He's definitely for next year if he recovers as predicted he could. Sky's the limit for this guy, so I'm sure we're all rooting for him.

I would be completely shocked if he played this year. Undergoing chemo is going to destroy his strength. He'll need a year to recover. This is a red-shirt year for him.

It's been reported that he was playing basketball the day of his chemo treatments. . . . and that he only lost about 10 pounds or so.

has a pretty good range of recovery experiences. This one is probably the sort that Cannon is hoping for:

Hi there. I finished my last chemo on February 2nd, 2009. I was really tired for about a month - but managed to walk almost every day. My appetite improved quickly, though I started craving sugar a lot (!) My skin broke out a lot after about a month - I thought maybe toxins coming out (?). It isn't so bad now. My neuropathy went away within a month. My muscles and joints still ache a bit.....but mostly when I wake up - first walking around - then during the day it goes away. I also underwent radiation treatments from March 16t - April 27th........so recovering from that too. But ran 5 km today! Woohoo. It does come back........everyone is different......but I noticed improvements quickly after the first month or 6 weeks or so........from chemo anyway.

How about hearing from someone who actually interviewed Cannon?

Cannon has had nausea only once. The day after his first treatment, he didn't feel well and cut short his fishing trip with Jones. He hasn't lost his hair, and he has maintained his weight despite losing his appetite. (He said he dropped to 338 after his first chemo treatment before figuring out he had to eat despite not being hungry. He now weighs 348.)

Cannon lifts three days a week at a local gym and runs at TCU with former teammates. He regularly tests his strength by benching 315 pounds.

"If I can do it eight or nine times, I'm good," Cannon said.

The same day he had his third chemo treatment, Cannon swam and played basketball. He said he couldn't be better.

From a personal opinion, I am expecting Cannon to be PUP'ed, but in no way do I expect this to be a 'redshirt' yr for him either.

This view has not changed since day one when we drafted him. As it is just my personal opinion, it doesn't really matter anyway, but this has just been what I've been expecting.

I am really rooting for this guy.Hope he makes it.

After seeing this guy working out with Warren Sapp, Marcel Dareus and Aldon SmithI really like this guy. Lets hope for the best. Cant wait to see him play in NE.

Marcus Cannon's Tweet hints he is ready to practice

Marcus Cannon tweeted this this morning:

Time to get in this playbook

Twitter

Both Mike Reiss and Ian Rapaport believe it means he is either ready to practice or close.

Re: Marcus Cannon's Tweet hints he is ready to practice

I'd rather see him on IR this year. We have 9 good linemen for this years roster. It will be hard for him to contribute without camp this year.

Someone tell rookies shouldn't tweet, BB does like the myface stuff by rooks ;)

I don't want him IRed. Even if he never sees the field, he can use that valuable work out time.

Besides, if he returns to practice this week, he still has a month of practice before the real games. And guard is not the hardest position to pick up quickly.

If he can be ready to contribute by midseason, I'd rather give him one of the backup slots. In any case, he's still PUP-eligible, so I'd go with that first.
