My 2 binkies from today's camp were Nate Solder and Ryan Mallett.

I thought Solder looked real good today especially given the small amount of time he's had on the field. When he walked up to the line in the 11v11s, he looked mammoth. He is a natural LT, his stance the way he sets up post snap on his step-back, his technique looked excellent and his footwork very fluid, he more than handled his own. He honestly looks like he could step right in day one in Sept.

Mallet is ready to take the #2 spot, tall and impressive in the pocket and ball jumps out of his hands on slants and outs. Throws frozen ropes and his accuracy looked really good today. You can tell he has the fire, he wants it. He was constantly talking to the coaches about routes when Brady and Hoyer were taking snaps, there was no down time for Ryan. The other great thing to see was Ryan staying after practice and working with the WRs. This kid wants it, it was great to see.

Price looked good, smooth, nice routes and good hands, he's definately going to get himself on the field in regular offensive sets, no question.

Didn't see Tate out there, not that it matters, because I think that WR ship has sailed anyway, but I'm not sure if he's hurt or what.

Gronk looked like John Mackey out there. Caught everything remotely close to him and ran over one of the safeties, may have been Sergio. He's predicted to have a Pro Bowl year and if you've seen what he's been doing in camp you'll know why.

Impressive today were:

Solder, Mallet, Gronk, Hernandez, Edelman and Slater, yes Slater, not only on ST but as a WR, the kid ran some nice routes and caught every ball thrown to him by Mallet.

IMO he had a Pro Bowl year LAST year, he just wasn't selected.

Regarding Mallett how is his touch? Having a rocket for an arm is gr8, but not so gr8 if his ball is uncatchable. How did he look in that regard?

I agree, to be honest, can anyone think of a better TE in the league right now? I can't, Gronk has it all, plus he's nasty, a pure throw-back great.

Mallet in the 7v7 and 11v11 wasn't really asked to drop touch passes into say RBs in the flat or anything like that. The majority of all of the routes were sharp outs along the sidelines and slants and they were short slants and the balls Ryan threw were in the numbers.

I can only speak to what I saw and his spiral is tight, sharp and yes with high velocity. I imagine he'll work on his touch as he progresses, but he wasn't asked to touch pass anything yesterday based on the routes I saw. This kid is going to be good and I say that because he has the physical attributes and when you combine the God-given physical traits with the heart to want it, to want to succeed and put in the work, then it's all there for him. I am really excited to see how he performs in the pre-season.

A great Tuna-ism went something like "'Potential' is another way of saying 'haven't done jack yet.'"

I am not going to put much stock into the training camp performance of a rookie QB when the vast majority of QBs who come into the league never become anything better than career backups. This is even more true outside of first rounders. I'm not saying that Mallett will be terrible or anything, I'm just saying that I'm ignoring him. I would only be paying attention if I was hearing BAD things about his character and work ethic.

However, some other positions, including RB and OL, are places that a young guy can come in and excel. Because of this, I have high hopes for Solder and Ridley, hearing that they are both doing well. Vereen and Cannon already have health issues that may hold them back, but I hope one or both can contribute soon, as both are at positions where they will both have the opportunity to compete for starting jobs if they can.

 10char

Hernandez say's hi b/c both him and Mallett were 1st round picks that fell due to drug and character concerns

We are probably talking about the same quote, and I took Mallet's statement as sarcasm,,,or it was jokingly,, But makes more sense that he would be complimentary,,

Mallett said he was looking forward to learning the dinks and dunks that Brady does. Montana was great at 'dinks and dunks', he said it was much more wearing on a defense than getting a quick TD with a long pass.

Brady was Mallett's idol growing up (but i guess you could say that about every QB) so its kinda surreal for him to be on the same team

He loves playing football and gives it his all...thats why i hate the jamarcus russell comparisons, they are different in that regard

After recent mixed reports about Cunningham and Solder. Can the next few people who go to TC have a quick look to see how they think those two are progressing please? Love the TC reports really gives us an indepth look at how some of our rook's/2nd year players are going. keep up the good work guys

Sorry for the delay. I was with family last night and finally made it back home. Some of the items I'll mention have already been covered.

Wow! What a great experience. Having been at the Redskins camp a few days earlier, it was a pretty stark contrast. The Pats camp seemed much better organized, more professional and quicker paced. They were in full pads. A lot of route tree, hurry up, situational and punting work.

The bleachers were packed and 3/4 of the grass end zone was full. The Redskins had maybe 300 or 400 people total. The Kickers were out early. It was nice to see Katula, the Long Snapper, out as well. After some 1/4 speed plays, it was very interesting to see the team stretching to music! Buffett, Bon Jovi, ect. I spent most of the time looking at the offense, as they were on the closest field.

A few observations:

-4/3 defense. A lot of situational work and hurry up offense.

-Butler was struggling. I'm a Butler fan, so it wasn't easy to see.

-Arrington seems to be getting better. He looked like he was in great shape.

-I didn't see AH, Wright, Tate, Spikes and Vareen.

-Dowling and Brace where in sweats. I'm really starting to worry about Brace. Light was in shorts and a Tshirt, however he did stretch and run with the team.

-Riddley hits the hole hard without a lot of dancing. He had a few nice catches out of the backfield as well. He did have one drop.

-Benny had a few nice runs.

-Woodhead looks good and in very good shape.

-Price looked good.

-Ochocinco had some nice catches, including a long pass from Brady that he caught in front of the stands. He got a huge ovation. He also caught a nice fade in the end zone from Brady. They seem to be getting on the same page. If his contract is a one year deal, I'm starting to feel better about the trade. He's a fan favaorite.

-Welker looked good. I don't remember seeing a drop.

-Eddleman looked really good to me. Much improved. While he did have a drop, his hands looked good.

-Branch and Brady still have that chemistry.

-Brady's accuracy looked good at times but at other times seemed a bit off. A number of throws were high. While they were catchable, the ones over the middle would have caused some problems for the receivers. He missed Ochocinco a few times.

-Mallett has a rocket arm. But he is thin, especially his upper body. Accuracy is somewhat of an issue.

-Hoyer seemed very comfortable in the offense.

-Gronk continues to have a good camp.

-Hernandez was open a lot and seems to be catching almost everything. Even with tight coverage over the middle, he came down with the catch.

-Gostowski missed one field goal during the situational work.

-Wow, our TE's are huge!

-Solder and Volmer spent a lot of time talking. Solder does play high at times. While I'd like to see him add some weight, he's not thin.

-Zoltan had some booming punts and some others that were so so.

-Seeing Solder catch the punt was pretty funny.

-BB spent several minutes talking to the team in huddle at the end. He must have said something funny, as most players smiled and laughed. Maybe something about the day off today.

-Brady stayed late running sprints that a coach was timing. I was impressed with the effort, however seeing him lumber down the field was a little funny. As most of us know, he's not the fastest player in the league.

-Mallett stayed with some rookies working on some throws.

-OL signed autographs.

Great notes, thank for the update :rocker:

Why waste time if the long pass is there? That just does not make any sense.

If the long pass is there, and almost a sure a thing, then it is a no-brainer to go for it. However, in any other scenario, you dink and dunk to get a score while controlling possession.
