Sammy Morris re-signed to 1-year deal

Morris does a lot between sts, pass protection, receiving and running.

From what I see, Morris does a lot between sitting on the bench, being inactive for games, being hurt with mysterious injuries and missing key blocks that get your franchise QB knocked out for the season.

:singing:

Maybe he can rush the passer

No harm bringing in vets with experience to camp. The only way he makes the roster is injuries and he can show the young RB's how they go about their business. BJGE still has to be signed as does Faulk, right now Woodhead is the only back under contract.

Don't count out the immortal Thomas Clayton.

I'm not really surprised that the Pats offered Morris a deal, considering how the newcomers will be behind on the learning curve without any coaching at mini-camps and OTA's over the last five months. Also keep in mind that training camp roster sizes are 90 players this year rather than the 80 there have been for along time now, so it makes more sense for the Pats to offer one of those ten extra spot to a player like Morris that is familiar with the system.

What does surprise me though is Morris accepting the Pats offer. I figured his agent would have been subtly making inquiries to other teams pro personnel directors and GMs over the summer to put the wheels in motion to get a deal with another team looking for a veteran where he had a much higher chance of landing a roster spot. The reality is that his being on the Pats roster in week one is more dependent on another player underwhelming or being injured than anything he does in camp.

Would have liked to see Barber brought in instead of Morris. I like Morris when he's healthy but most of the time he's NOT. And then he just becames a waste of a roster spot.

The lockout ends and this board gets absolutely flooded with Jets talk and people ready to commit suicide because the team signed a veteran to a one year deal. Bring the lockout back, please.

I sure hope it's very cap friendly. Does he really have a chance of making the team?

He's one of the $1m cap exemptions for veterans.Doesn't count against the $120m 2011 cap.

Maybe BB realizes the veterans do have the ability to impart knowledge to the rookies coming through (especially given this stunted pre-season) and is happy for them to be role players on the Patriots.

Hopefully he's just insurance in case the rookies dont work out and BJGE gets money elsewhere

I really don't like this. That spot should be for a DB or a WR not another RB!

What spot? They didn't make him the 53rd man they added him to a 90 man roster. They will be bringing in more players at every position and this doesn't change that at all.

There has been no offseason to this point and no camps so Belichik needs veterans to not only show the rookies how to conduct themselves in film study, weight rooms etc. But also how to run plays and technique. Just telling yhemnisn't enough, showing them is vital.
