WTF?? Ridley??

Agreed.

I'm just glad that we are no longer looking for running backs.

That is the truth, I like both Vereen and Ridley a lot. But will miss Faulk.

Ridley doesn't have a fast forty. Whatever. He looks like a football player.

But here's a warning flag: The kid only did 18 reps with the 220 bench press.

Shane Vereen, a smaller guy at the same position, did 31.

That lack of upper body strength is a concern. I think it was a reach taking Ridley when we did.

So he is small, slow and weak?

This is perfect.

Wasn't he supposed to be a powerful runner?

Gross pick.

Wait, so the bench press is the only indicator of someone's upper body strenght?

He was also voted as captain by his teammates for 2010. Let's see how it turns out. Our running back stable just got a lot younger compared to the old fragile group we've had the past few years.

I firmly believe that by the end of the year, we'll be referring to him as "the talented Mr. Ridley"...and the "Riddler!"

If there's one thing I hate most about NFL Draft talk, it's the "You could have gotten him later" argument.

You, me, and every NFL draft official really has NO IDEA who's going to get picked when. There are surprises every year. This is especially true as you move into the later rounds.

Who's to say someone else didn't view Ridley the way we did? When you see a guy who you think is going to add to your team, and you think it's the place to draft him YOU DO IT.

I had no idea who Ridley was, but after reading about him and watching the YouTube video above, i'm thinking WOW. (if you haven't watched that video or read about him, don't comment on him).

The guy just does not get taken down by the first (often the second) defender. He was predicted to go late because he only has one year under his belt. No one knows that much about him.

He's a shifty, strong, powerful back, who can catch! He and Vereen could make for a deadly duo. I'd say Ridley's "floor" is goal line back.

If Ridley learns and excels at pass protection, I believe he will take most of Green-Ellis's carries away.

This is my most hated Patriot on the roster. Just hate this kid because of the stupid pick.

We pick a guy who would probably go undrafted, with 0 upside?

Effing awful.

Wow, already hates the guy..... and he hasn't even reported to camp yet.... A touch of hyperbole there.

I actually like this pick a lot.....

A really good (by all accounts) character guy, with low wear that will be used primarily ST up front while allowing us to let our ancient stable of RB fall by the way side. One of the only positions we are really fragile at last year was RB. Sure, we had BJGE and Woody, but after that, we were trotting out dinosaurs.

I'm glad BB stopped addressing RB depth through FA and went back to the draft. The 'old farts' he brought in really weren't effective. I'll miss Faulk though. :(

Even Jonas Mouton to the Chargers? :singing:

Agree with your point however, Ridley was getting some late buzz and I saw in more than one place that his stock was rising, presumably as pundits were getting a better feel for teams big boards.

I agree. The veterans were training table regulars and contributed little between the lines.

Add in the navy guys and RB should be a hugely competitive position in TC.

FWIW

Pete Prisco, grading the picks at CBSSports.com thinks Ridley was a better pick than Vereen. Says that he is a "chain-mover". Bearing in mind that the Pats weren't able to kill some noteable games off last year* (Chargers, Colts, Steelers, Packers with a backup QB**), having a ground game that can move the chains late in the game could be a serious addition.

*Yes we won those games, but it wasn't as comfortable as it should have been.

** And for those having kittens about this draft, can we remember that our woeful front 7 and complete lack of pass rush beat the Steelers, Colts, Chargers and Packers last year. That's with the youngest defense in the NFL and without Ty Warren and Leigh Bodden. The end is not nigh!

Greg Cosell liked the pick too.

Was happy BB drafted Ridley. Tough downhill runner w/power + some wiggle. Competitive. An attitude runner. Professional. Workmanlike.

I hate the whole we could have gotten ridley later argument. We may have had that deal in place with Oakland before the ridley pick was made so our last 3rd and 4th were not in play. If we really liked ridley may not have wanted to take the risk that he would have been there in round 5.

According to Belichick they discussed the 2nd for the 3rd and 4th, 6 hours prior to the deal taking place. So yeah, the Ridley pick made sense if that was their guy they were shooting.

The more I think about this, the more I can see the reasons why.

The older RB's (Taylor and Morris) probably won't return. "the man" KF may be retiring. RB's take a beating during the year. Getting a speedy RB w/ great hands (Vereen) and a bruiser (Ridley) can replace these older (and slower) guys w/ young legs. Factor that in w/ Green-Ellis and Woodhead & I am starting to get it.

Yes, I still wish we had a stud DE.
