not sold on solder.. but i think this pick means its over for matt light...

on the contrary, i think it means the matt light era will continue for another year. solder is a guy with huge upside, but he's only played tackle for one year and having him start from day one would be a huge mistake. light will be back on a 2-3 year deal, the first as a starter with solder eased in by rotation, and then next 1-2 as veteran insurance

Unless he is moving to LG or RT (Vollmer would move inside)

Vollmer is not going inside, but I've thought they should sign Light, draft a tackle, have Light for insurance at LT and move him inside to guard when the rook is ready. We'll see if they sign Light.

I agree that the Light era is over, Vollmer can make the switch to left tackle. The money saved by not resigning Light goes to signing a long term deal with Logan Mankins.

Sad but true. Belichick burned the 17th pick on a not ready for prime time OLman. UNREAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Matt Light era may not be over but the Patriots being a force in the playoffs seems to be.
You simply can't keep passing on the opportunity to add quality athletic impact players on D and win championships.

Wow, glass half empty much? OL was as big a need, maybe bigger, than DL. We were, after all, 8th in the league last year in points against, thats not bad. Plenty of picks left, don't get your panties in a bunch.

I think you are mistaken about Solders background.

:singing: 10 chars......

Love the pick! O-line is a major need and Nate was the only LT who has big LT ability. The other guys are all questionable LT at the NFL level.

What did you say about the Devin McCourty pick last year? Logan Mankins? Richard Seymour?

He's a 3 year starter at left tackle, team captain, smart, hard worker. I trust Dante knows what he wants.

very few defensive players make any sort of impact in belichick's system their first year either, and the ot spot is now secure for the next decade. makes the inevitable transition to post-brady much easier for a young qb if he has stalwart guys blocking for him, for sure.

Matt Light is still a better tackle than Vollmer at this point and if the Pats want to win NOW they should resign him. Solder is at least a year away from being NFL ready.

I can't remember any OL that Belichick drafted in the top 3 rounds in NE that never panned out to have successful careers here.

Trust

Thats a joke. Volmer made NFL All Pro second team this year playing out of position, and in only his second season.

This is what you said about McCourty last year. What a mistake McCourty was over Odrick and Hughes right?

You've got to be kidding me. Bill trades down twice, Odreck and Hughes were still on the board and Bill picks a special teams player.
Unreal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This team needs a GM.

Solder spent 3 years at LT for Boulder after 2 years (freshman red-shirt) as a blocking TE for them.

And Solder was a consensus All-American pick in 2010. And he only allows 7 QB pressures his Junior and Senior Seasons.. Combined.

That said, he's got some technique issues, but ones that I believe Dante can get corrected quickly. We'll probably see him rotated in much the same way Vollmer was when Vollmer was a rookie.
