What to do?

Not sure how to proceed here without some guidelines. For instance, would the Geneva Conventions be in force here? Would the use of nuclear weapons be frowned upon?

I can see trading down with their first round picks to add picks inside #60 but not the deferred trades you laid out. If they trade #17 it is for a low 20's pick and when they trade #33 it is for a pick inside #40 or picks he can turn around for a top 40 choice, but there is no way he just keeps moving picks back into coming years. One maybe, most likely #33,but not multiple picks.

Belichik likes dropping down in the first because trade value is so high and he can accumulate picks that he then moves back up with with very little cost, as he's already decided whether there will be a prospect worth that high a pick there when it's time to make the choice, so if those with that grade are gone it is a no brainer, and if he sees real value from 20-90 he can pass on players he wasn't going to take for the ability to move for those he wants in that range.

MaineMan , let's say that to the horror of every Pats fan , in never ending search for a VALUE , Pats FO trades out of the 1st round.
Secondly , I can envision four QBs going in first round . Lockout may force some teams to overreact and reach for the most important position in football.
I think that one of the Redskins' biggest needs is a franchise QB and DE to build their 34 defence. If Locker falls past Minnesota and Miami , Shanahan will pound on this guy ( hence Kyle Boller type trade ) .

Is the goal to have 6 #1s ready to go when Brady retires or gets kicked to the curb.....BB....that devious bastard

U just let the meat of the draft pass you.. I think BB will make 1 trade but 2 with our 1st two picks?

Why not, it's Tuesday, nothing better to do.

33 -- OL Ben Ijalana
41 -- DL Kendrick Ellis (assuming his background checks out)
45 -- DL Jarvis Jenkins
60 -- Ten from NE (Ten trades #77, #109, and #175 to get ahead of Carolina and draft Ricky Stanzi after Buffalo and Cincinnati draft Kaepernick and Dalton at the top of the second)
74 -- RB Jordan Todman
77 -- DB Jalil Brown
92 -- OL Jah Reid
109 - OL Tim Barnes
125 - DB Curtis Brown
159 - WR Aldrick Robinson
172 - RB Anthony Allen
175 - DL Frank Kearse
193 - OLB Karl Klug

There aren't really too many scenarios that would piss me off regarding our selections. This however, is definitely one of those scenarios.

I also agree with the poster who said that these trades do not seem very reasonable. I agree that if we trade out of 17 (which we very well may do) it will be for something within the next 5 or 6 picks (22-23 range). We aren't going to move from 17 all the way to 41 just to get their first rd pick next year. It would take a lot more than that.

That isn't even the worst of it--you actually think we're going to move our 1st round pick for a 2nd round pick next year (SF), lol? To me that doesn't even come close to making sense. I don't even think we'd move from 28 to 45 for JUST next year's FIRST round pick, let alone just next yr's 2nd.

I respect your attempt, and envisioning all of these different scenarios is hard, but these are not even close to being realistic in my opinion. There is absolutely no value or incentive for BB to do any of this.

I like where he's going with it too. I'm all for moving down to gain added picks, and last yr's draft certainly proved that. I'm also up for outside of the box thinking, and anyone who takes the time to put together a mock. I think the value needs to be re-assessed that's all.

Well, I don't accept your apparent premise that the Pats trade exclusively for value as defined solely by pick numbers in current or future drafts - IOW, accepting "lesser" players solely for the purpose of making that exchange. That seems a gratuitous exaggeration of what I believe to be their trade-down process which is simply to NOT take a prospect at, say, #22 when you're confident you can get the exact same person at #27 and grab a couple extra picks in the exchange.

IOW, your proposition kinda falls into the realm of, "What if NYC gets nuked on Draft Day," or, "What if we're invaded by Martians on the eve of the draft."

I'd rather have a scenario where the Patriots moved up to #10 from #28, and picked at #10 and #17.

33. Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama - Sorry, AJ Smith. I'm not the biggest Ingram fan in the world, and we certainly have bigger needs, but the kid's too talented to let him slide any further.

41. Christian Ballard, DE, Iowa - Will likely be the best remaining five technique at this point in the draft, and BB will likely get positive reports from Kirk Ferentz.

45. Bruce Carter, LB, North Carolina - A bit smaller than the typical Belichick LB, but Carter has the speed, quickness, and discipline the Pats covet. He should have Ninkovich on the bench by mid-season.

60. Marcus Gilbert, OT, Florida - Can't teach quick feet for a player of Gilbert's size, and he has 'em. Could possibly play LT, but at the least, I think he'll be a very good RT.

74. Johnny Patrick, CB, Louisville - Should at least bring a merciful end to the Jonathan Wilhite Era.

92. Stephen Schilling, G, Michigan - I get the sense that he's Dante's kind of interior lineman.

124. Jaiquawn Jarrett, S, Temple - I've never gotten the sense that BB was a huge fan of Brandon Meriweather, even before the shooting. Safety is one of those sneaky needs that I think the Pats could very well address in this draft.

156. Denarius Moore, WR, Tennessee - Potential big-play type of WR.

184. Ryan Bartholomew, C, Syracuse - Possible long-term replacement for Dan Koppen down the road.

33. Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama - Sorry, AJ Smith. I'm not the biggest Ingram fan in the world, and we certainly have bigger needs, but the kid's too talented to let him slide any further.

I'd love to hear a Florida fan's full breakdown of Ingram and what he brings to the Patriots.

I'm very interested in Gilbert. Seems like Dante kind of guy.

First off I’ll say I don’t like what you did. We need a stud on the DL, and none are left to be taken.

But….

#33 Mark Ingram, RB best player available and the only player left that can guarantee making an impact this year on the Pats

Move up to #36 from #41 with 2012 4th for Brooks Reed

Move down from #45 to #55 or so and pick up 2012 3rd rounder and draft C/G Wisniewski

#60 Jarvis Jenkins DT/DE

#74 Orlando Franklin, OG/OT

#92 Ricki Stanzi, QB

#125 Greg Romeus OLB

#159 Terence Tolliver WR

#172 Justin Rogers, CB

I really, really, REALLY, like the way you think, Sir!

That's an oversimplification, too.

The "judgment" that BB makes on Test Day is, to borrow from a short story, "The Player or the Pick(s)"—in other words, which does he think will make the team better in the long run: taking the player with the available pick, or making the trade, and risk losing out on the player/overpaying to jump up for the player?

(1) Devin McCourty. It was clear that BB could have taken him at 22 and been perfectly happy, but he saw that he could trade down to 24 and then to 27 and still get him. Clearly he didn't greatly fear losing McCourty.

(2) Shawn Crable. Remember that BB was on the phone with Crable when San Diego called and offered their second+ for #69 in 2008. Clearly here BB felt that the possibility of missing out on Crable did not outweigh trading away that pick.

(3) If you look back at the last six drafts, BB has traded picks forward in five of them. The one exception? Out of 2006 and into 2007—didn't happen.
