WOW!! The Sports Hub must be kicking butt because they've got WEEI cutting their own throat.

Dale and Holley show is out. Holley is going to the Big Show with Ordway and Lou Merloni and Mike Mutnansky are the new duo from 10 - 2. Lou Merloni and Mike Mutnansky??? WHAT????? HUH???????

I agree with the 98.5 kicking butt part, but why do you think WEEI is cutting their own throat ?
Dale was so dull.
This might help rejuvenate WEEI.
Sounds like the midday show might have a heavy Sox bias, but what else is new.

Re: OT: Shake-up at WEEI D & H out

Outside of Patriots Monday, Dale and Holley was the only WEEI show that I listened to. I guess it's the HUB for me.

Re: OT: Shake-up at WEEI D & H out

I think it's less about kicking butt than shoring up the Big Show. I think Felger and Mazz were eating into the ratings, although I can't for the life of me understand how anyone can listen to those two. Dale and Holley were still dominating the ratings race in that time slot. I don't think Gresh and Zo were even remotely close ratings wise, so maybe WEEI felt compelled to shift resources to the midday show. Not sure what the deal is with Dale, though. Other than Mutt and Lou probably cost less than Dale alone and with baseball season upon us and a lockout on the NCL horizen WEEI is shifting gears.

Merloni knows NOTHING about football, neither does that perpetual juvenile Mike Adams at night. I'm probably going to be tuning in 98.5 more than ever now, but I've already gravitated toward Zolak/Gresh anyway because they're football guys. The only time I drop in on 'EEI these days is during the Big Show to see if they're talking football. Both stations suck before 10 a.m. I wonder what Dale Arnold is going to do now.

The absolute one show i would listen to weekly was D and H with Peter King Fridays @noon. Always good stuff.
Call me old school but i never cared for screaming confrontational sports radio. Information and educated opinion is what always draws me. I guess thats why when i drive home at night from work and away from the city, i have, and will continue to listen to FAN

Arnold paired with Felger would be interesting (who in God's name would miss Mazz the pipsqueak?). To quote Kenny Mayne years ago when commenting upon a John Wasdin/Coors Field match-up: "Like driving a gasoline truck into a bon-fire."

Re: OT: Shake-up at WEEI D & H out

I have to assume that there's something behind the scenes here, because this move makes no sense to me right now.

Re: OT: Shake-up at WEEI D & H out

Wow, surprised at this even though I switched completely to 98.5 a long time ago. I thought Dale & Holley was the one good thing EEI had going for it. Holley and Glen Ordway? Yikes. That sounds worse than Felger & Mazz when they started. Mazz has grown on me, though, and I always liked Felger (yes, I know I am in the minority).

Re: OT: Shake-up at WEEI D & H out

Couple theories:

One of them is that Dale may have been ready for retirement, and that this shake up was to accommodate one of WEEI's longest tenured guys. This is pretty much a semi retirement for Dale, as he'll be on fill in duty (a couple weeks here and there in summer, maybe around the holidays for a bit).

Another is that Holley was strongly considering jumping ship to 98.5. It's been a common feeling for a while that TSH was trying to poach Holley, first for the midday show, but perhaps for the afternoon drive (either a 3 man booth between Felger-Mazz-Holley) or replacing Mazz outright with Holley.

Personally, I'm going to take the easy way out and say it's a little bit of both. If Dale wasn't ready to ride off into the sunset, I don't think he would have agreed to some part time fill in duty.

Re: OT: Shake-up at WEEI D & H out

Merloni deserves promotion. Mutnansky will be good and his voice is almost a dead ringer for ESPN's Colin Cowherd.

Re: OT: Shake-up at WEEI D & H out

Merloni deserves promotion.

Why? He's a one-trick pony (baseball). The only one worse on that station is Adams, who only knows baseball but from the 1960s.

As another poster suggested it would be great to see Mazzerpipsqueak replaced by anyone -- including Dale Arnold. Can't get used to that guy's voice.

Re: OT: Shake-up at WEEI D & H out

bring back pete!!!!!!

Re: OT: Shake-up at WEEI D & H out

Well, yeah. The guys in the money spots on 98.5 are actually talented and unlike their counterparts have more synaptic connections than thumbs. The 98.5 midday guys aren't the most talented, but both really know football well. Gresh knows how to play an audience and Zo is...well...that dude who went stage diving at an Everclear show. It's really no surprise 98.5 is mopping the floor with EEI, especially considering they focus on the two cool sports in town.

Dale was so dull?? Have you heard Lou Merloni??
Mike Mutnansky???? What???
Holley and Ordway are not going to gel as a show.
Ordway talks over, above and around everyone on that show and Holley is disagreeable just for the sake of being disagreeable over the most minute opinion. If you tell Mike Holley the sky is blue he'll come back with "I don't know about that. I've seen it more blue than that. Yesterday I saw a sky that was much bluer than today". Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz........
Tell you right now neither one of these shows have line-ups that I want to listen to.
Hellooooo Sports Hub.

Merloni is a one-trick pony? That's one more trick than Felger, Mazz and Gresch combined.

98.5 is, perhaps, the worst sports radio station on the east coast. It has one show worth listening to, and that show doesn't start until 6 pm.

Re: OT: Shake-up at WEEI D & H out

Love to listen to Holley and hate listening to the blowhard Ordway. So I'm hoping that this is a prelude to the Michael Holley show in the 2-6 slot. I think Merloni has lots of untapped talent but he needs a football co-host. Troy Brown is a bit dry ... Mutnansky sucks.

No more Fred .... :D

No more Deossie ... :D:D

No more Max ... :mad::mad::mad:

Bottom line here ... looking at it financially is that no way Ordway and Holley can co-exist. Hopefully that means Ordway is on his way out also. :D:D:D:D

Agreed x a bazillion. What's a shame is Dale Arnold is a knowlegable and fair minded host and proved you don't need to be a whiney dikhead to have a decent show. Shame the dikheads won out.

Not surprising they would break up the Big Show format. It is tired and shown it's vunerability against real competition. Hopefully, Holley will have an actual real voice and not just be Ordway's sounding board. Holley needs to take control of the show and be at least on equal footing with Ordway. He can't be another Pete who is there to stroke Ordway's ego and be the butt of everyone's jokes. Holley if used right could make that show listenable again and hopefully he will oust Ordway in a year or two.

Surprised with their midday selection though. Well, not really with WEEI's bias towards the Sox. With the increasing popularity of the Pats and the seeming cooing towards the Red Sox, WEEI could be conceeding 10-2 for the months of August through February unless the Sox make a real World Series push.
