OT: Steve Smith wants out of Carolina

How good would he look in Patriot blue?

Report: Steve Smith asked for a trade in 2010
According to the Gaston Gazette, Steve Smith approached owner Jerry Richardson about a possible trade early in the 2010 season.Smith presumably wanted out of Carolina once it became clear that his quarterback situation was arguably the league's worst. Nothing has chanced on that front, so it's a good bet that Smith would rather play elsewhere in 2011. GM Marty Hurney acknowledges that Smith is frustrated after a 2-14 season, but he also implied that the Panthers aren't looking to trade an "impact player." Smith has made it clear that he's not a fan of Jimmy Clausen, so we may not have heard the last of this issue. Feb 10, 5:15:00 PM

3rd rounder??

Re: OT: Steve Smith wants out of Carolina

I'd rather someone taller and younger, but if the price is right...

I'm all for trading for talent, but not 32 year old talent that has had issues. If they wouldn't give up a 2nd for Vjax / Marshall, two guys that are better than Smith in every way except speed, than I really dont' see why they'd do this.

The following guys are free agents:

Randy Moss
Chad Johnson
Vincent Jackson
Malcolm Floyd
Sidney Rice

I'm sure there are a ton more. No team trying to trade WR (Pats included if that Welker rumor has any degree of truth to it) is going to be doing it in a sellers market.

VJax gets franchised. Sidney Rice might get franchised. Chad Johnson is under contract.

Plus YOU CAN'T TRADE PLAYERS UNTIL THERE'S A NEW CBA.

Re: OT: Steve Smith wants out of Carolina

They're going to franchise a guy that all but refused to play for them next year? Actually, yea I could see AJ Smith doing that.

He refused to play for $2 million or whatever it was. He'll feel differently at $10 million +.

Re: OT: Steve Smith wants out of Carolina

Smitty, although small, can burn and get deep and he's a play maker after the catch. I agree I would rather have a taller guy, but Smith plays bigger than his size and I would welcome the upgrade over Tate, and as mentioned, if the price is right this could work.

Re: OT: Steve Smith wants out of Carolina

OMG just what we need, another old ass receiver with injuries under six foot.

Re: OT: Steve Smith wants out of Carolina

THis came upon Reiss's mailbag today. His response:

"I can't imagine why Carolina would want to trade him, but if they would, I'd look into it. Smith is a top competitor. But when I look at the Panthers, they have so few assets and Smith is one of them. I think they'll hang on to him."

Chat: Chat with Mike Reiss - SportsNation - ESPN Boston

I'm actually surprised Reiss's response was relatively positive. As others stated, Smith is 32, has an injury history and short.

Re: OT: Steve Smith wants out of Carolina

I wouldn't be surprised if he gets released. In his prime he was probably the toughest reciever in the league, a great deep threat and willing to go over the middle. He has had no quarterback for the last 3 years, and gets doubled every game. He is a play maker.

I would take a flier if the price was right for sure.

Re: OT: Steve Smith wants out of Carolina

I'm a Patriots and Panther fan and I can tell you the Pats don't need him. He's got a bad attitude (he hit a fellow teammate), and pouts when he doesn't get the ball thrown his way. Take it from someone who has watched him for years. He used to be a great receiver, but he's been dropping a lot of balls lately. He gets a lot of stupid holding penalties on run plays too. Maybe BB could straighten him out, but he's definitely potential trouble waiting to happen.

You forgot to add 2 yrs ago before he had leg injury.

Re: OT: Steve Smith wants out of Carolina

I don't get it. How can people who despised Moss for his selfish attitude lobby for the Pats to pursue Smith? He's basically the same kind of person, maybe even a little worse considering Moss never hit a teammate. Seriously guys, it's like being asked if you would sleep with a girl who is an 8 but has STDs. Just say no. We need more workman-like receivers like Deion and Wes (but with more sizre and vertical playmaking ability of course).

Smith is more than a little worse than Moss. A lot more than a little.

Re: OT: Steve Smith wants out of Carolina

Why do we want Smith?...So he can punch out and stomp on Deion Branch in Training Camp?

Yeah..nice attitude from this punk....besides he's a bit up in the age bracket

A wacky thought IMO

Re: OT: Steve Smith wants out of Carolina

Another short guy!?

I want someone taller
