Goodell to SI: Deceived by Belichick

i guess those are king's words .you can ask him ..

I had emailed him when he wrote earlier about how spygate was overblown and pointed out - in a very polite manner, with excerpts from BB's CBS interview in which BB pointed out that we did not 'steal' signs and how the signs were irrelevant .

Not surprised that he didn't bother to respond or include my mail in his subsequent MMQB mailbag.

Nevertheless, I plan to email him about this 'secret' word later today. Thx

Will this BS re:Spygate ever die?

Patriot hate at it's best.......

If the Pats had fired Belichick after the SB42 debacle, like they should have, this issue would be dead and buried. Thanks Bill.....

Regime change in Egypt....time for regime change in Foxboro....

or tweet...dont know if he will respond though

if the commie thinks BB didn't meet the press, what was BB's interview with CBS on national tv all about??

"Goodell told Kraft that, as part of the disciplinary action, Belichick would have to make a verbal apology in front of the press that week."

Read carefully the last two words.

I am the first to defend the Pats on the basis of Spygate being overblown and ridiculous. However, this little snippet does not exactly paint Belichick in a good light. He probably could have lessened the punishment, not to mentioned saved the franchise's face, had he just been open about what happened. Instead, he went into poker-face mode all week, just infuriating the rest of the league and fans even further. Usually if you are guilty of something, and you keep your mouth shut, people will just think the worst. Yes, he did an interview eventually, but it was too late by that time.

Let me see.

Fines over a million dollars, loss of a draft pick, for a rules violation.

Destroys the evidence, making the whole thing seem like its some kind of cover up.

If anybody should feel deceived, it the Patriots organization, and fans. We were deceived into thinking this guy was competent enough for his job.

IMO, he did the most damage during Spygate. His actions helped fuel the perception of foul play, and I personally will never forgive him for that.

His over-reactionary style of justice, which appears to mostly cater to media scrutiny, is in a word, pathetic.

Does he really think the legacy of BB and the Patriots without it (negatively) affecting the NFL? Granted, there's more than a few players and fans who will always rally against the Patriots, but I don't see what he was hoping to accomplish with his outburst.

I'd like to see the whole inteview...who initiated the line of questioning into this? With SB week at hand, ther should be more relvant news events...though maybe that's the point, you get more press this time of year.

I went to SI to see if i could read this. Here's a quote by king people may want to keep at the ready for any future emails:
I take errors seriously. This story is a good cautionary tale about making assumptions, and I'll redouble my efforts to not do so in the future.

Yeah, probably....

Seeing how King's SI story is a retrospective of Goodell's tenure as commissioner, I'm wondering whether those are new quotes or quotes from three years ago?

If they are old quotes I don't recall Goodell saying that - though there was so much going on, with the media writing new stories on the topic on a daily basis, then it would be easy to not remember him uttering those words.

On the other hand, if Goodell just said those things now, I have to ask: why? What is the point in bringing that up now? What is the upside? I don't see any - unless it is some sort of personal vendetta.

If Goodell did make that statement recently, then to me it is further proof that he is biased against Belichick, and by association the Patriots since BB is the Pats HC and GM. For the commissioner of the NFL to hold that kind of bias against one organization is a very dangerous thing.

Ironically he rails about integrity, but his making this kind of a public stand against Belichick (and therefore, the Patriots) could harm the integrity of the NFL more than any other action or inaction on his part since he has taken office.

:ditto:

I know Kraft is a businessman and will see to his business interest first. But at what point of time, he is going to put on the hat of Pats Owner and have some kind of response. This is down right silly that this issue being brought up time and again and our side is assuming the lame duck posture.

Mr. Kraft: When commish of the league is holding such a grudge against your team, have some passion and either come out and say, yes what BB did was wrong or lash out at the F*** commish for acting silly. Don't hang the fans dry, after all this is your team and your legacy too

Belichick should come out and let Goodell have it with both barrels. Sadly, he won't.

If they are going to dig up 42 month old news to discuss, why not dig up pittsburgs admited abuse of steroids during there super bowl runs? After all old news is old news and isn't this week suppose to be about Pittsburg?

I agree. I think Krafty Bob needs to stick up for his employee here and reiterate to the masses the actual events in chronological order and that based on the pace of the investigation, it would have been premature for BB to offer a public apology.

With that said, I can understand someone being a little aggrevated about HOW and WHEN someone apologizes but to openly say that someone felt decieved after a 3 year old issue that has been resolved via an investigation and a penalty, it seems very petty to me for a commissioner of a major sports league to behave in this manner.

Now that he has come out with this nonsense, as time goes on I wonder if he'll harbor any lingering negative sentiment towards the NFL Players Assoc and Smith as negotiations get dicey? Will he say he was "deceived" a commitment was no honored in his mind?

Bottom line: I think Goody is in over his head.

This is unfair to Belichick.

Goodell is a tool in a ll this.

Four things:

One, Belichick let it be known that he did not feel he was afoul of the rule. The memo went out a year before. In the interim, the Jets were caught taping and the NFL was OK with it. Belichick's conclusion may have been that the memo had no teeth and that the rule in the NFL rulebook was applicable (no use of gametape during the game).

Two, Belichick did Goodell a service by not getting into a public war over this by pointing out all sorts of backroom stuff (i.e. what other teams were taping, the NFL's stance on taping with regard to the Jets, Phins, etc.) The ridiculousness of being fined for taping from a location, whereas taping is legal elsewhere. Goodell is slamming Belichick for not opening up about the situation? Goodell is the one who destroyed the videotapes. Belichick was left no choice. How was Goodell deceived if Belichick was not at all contrite about what was done?

Three, I know Belichick was not contrite because on the night before the Super Bowl, Costas interviewed Goodell, and during that interview, Costas asked Goodell whether Matt Walsh was credible. Goodell backed him but said no videotapes of a Rams' walkthrough were produced. (I'd guess Goodellw as concerned with being sued by Walsh. But when it came to Belichick, Goodell out and out called Belichick a liar. He said, "I didn't believe Belichick." Well, if he didn't believe Belichick during the period BEFORE the fine was handed out, then how in the world did he expect Belichick to apologize? Belichick, according to Goodell, lied to him. What is going to apologize for if Belichick's statements to Goodell are deemed lies? That's silly, and it contradicts Goodell.

Four, Goodell knows that when Belichick retires, he's going to write a book and he's going to de-pants Goodell for the fool that he really is. And all this stuff coming from Goodell now is just fodder for that very day.

What "integrity" by Goodell, talking about old, private matters that have no reason to be brought up. Classic. Mr. Jet, I mean, Mr. Goodell shows his true colors.

the son of a politician complaining about someone decieving him.....LOL

I'm not too keen on BB's personality traits, but I must believe that BB did what he said he was going to do, simply that Goodell assumed he heard something else

eerie similarities to Mankins' gripes last year

Really? It's the week of the SB and all the commissioner can do is still whine about crap that happened 3 and a half years ago? He is truly incompetent.

Bill and Robert Kraft did apologize to the OWNERS at the next owner's meeting in Palm Beach after the punishment was handed out. This was widely reported at the time, and that the owners felt that it was a sincere and heartfelt apology.

So he was supposed to also call in the press and apologize to them too? Please. Those jerks from the Herald and ESPN that made up all sorts of crap shoudn't be getting any apology. He apologized to the audience that mattered
