3-2 is as close as a series can possibly be over five games. Add in the fact that the team with the two wins has outscored the one with the three wins, and it's even closer. I think it's highly inaccurate to portray this as "Jets have Pats number", or some of the other similar commentary that's being said. Ryan's Jets have finished second to the Patriots in each of his seasons as head coach, but have progressed further in the playoffs. It's even, it's a wash; I don't know how anyone can objectively say otherwise. It's easy to cherry pick one single fact in order to prove your point, regardless of which side it is, if you have an agenda.
I do think the fact that Ryan brings the Patriots up once again does show the Pats are still very much on his mind, to the point of obsession. If he does have a reason for his comments - as opposed to just speaking without thinking about what he is saying - I can think of two reasons.
First, after a season ending defeat he, the players, and their fans are depressed. This commentary spins a negative into a positive; they all get to walk away with their heads held high as if they accomplished something significant in 2010, and can head into 2011 with confidence.
Second, it's just another in a long list of attempts to get the Belichick and the Patriots off their game, distracted, and lose their focus. My guess is that he's rolling the dice with this type of plan because deep down he knows that Belichick is a better coach, and the Patriots are a better team. If it works then it was a great idea, and if it doesn't work that's okay too because he had to come up with something to try to win; nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Bottom line is that I predict we'll hear Ryan say something about the Patriots on a regular basis all off season; we may as well get used to it.
