Re: Ken Walter signed, Spann released

I was thinking the same thing he has to know somebody with Vinatieri gone

Yeah, that was the excuse before.

Nobody could hold Adam's balls like Ken could.:D

Re: Ken Walter signed, Spann released

Can we make it a forum rule to refer to the new signee as simply the "Punter"?

reading his name makes me stick forks in my eyes. The back of his jersey should also read "Punter".

Re: Ken Walter signed, Spann released

Ah Ha

Meet the punter: Patriots.com has these facts and a story about new punter Brooks Barnard, who'll replace Ken Walter. (Coach Bill Belichick had known Walter since he was a ball boy for the Cleveland Browns, so letting him go yesterday couldn't have been easy. Walter's 18-yard punt Sunday during the Colts game probably sealed his fate. His 37.9 yards per punt average was the worst in the entire National Football League.)

Ken F****ng Walter. Wow.

I need to go check my blood pressure. Extra magnesium and taurine before bed. Must not blow a gasket. Belly breathing. Remember the belly breathing.

If my night terrors come back and I have to go back to the shrink, I'm suing the Patriots for mental distress.

Ken Walter???? Really??

Re: Ken Walter signed, Spann released

ooohhhh (shudders) ... not good...not good

Re: Ken Walter signed, Spann released

Ken freakin Walter. I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

If Miller really is injured, we could just go for it on every 4th down I suppose...

Re: Ken Walter signed, Spann released

Lordy me! It all comes flooding back. But those were the days when our punter was about all we had to complain about ...

I must have been the only person on this board to feel sorry for Brooks Barnard. He did the full media story-of-my-life interviews (how he got his first name from a baseball player, etc., etc.) when he was called up, only to bounce down the front steps to the building a week later. But I have a sentimental thing about young idiots (was one myself not so long ago ...)

Now how in the wide, wide world of sports does a punter manage to injure himself? I mean, kick the ball seven or eight times a game and THAT'S IT!!! You have to be a real klutz to mess that up, eh Josh?

There might be something to this. Walter's probably just here to hold and serve as an excuse to go for it on every 4th down. Pats are what, 11 for 12 on the year or something? Pats have about the same chance of not converting on 4th down as Walter has of shanking a punt.

He's also very qualified as a ball boy. Absolutely lights out. You'll never see footballs get exchanged quicker. I think Polian was going to file a grievence about this, so they brought in Walter to go along with the new field.

Re: Ken Walter signed, Spann released

With all of the extra picks we get next year, we need to make sure to use one on a punter. There's got to be a good one out there.

I'm going to re-watch the 2003 season DVD now. If I come back pissed off, you'll know why.

I know that Walter had some horrible punts in 03', but what stuck in my mind was the Super Bowl that year with Kinchen snapping. Re-watch that game and count how many low and high and one-bounce snaps that Walter fielded cleanly on punts and field goals and calmly got away ( if only for a quick 15 yards or so ). If he can return to his form, he was pretty good. I think the intangible of being good under pressure may be why he is back.

More like a shovelfull of sugar, for this medicine.:(

On the radio today they were saying that Walter had shoulder surgery last year and is healthy again. Perhaps this is true....and I'm sure they wanted a pro holder for the kid kicker if they had to make a change.

And they said Miller has a shoulder injury??? HTF does a Punter injure his shoulder? Early in the season he was among the league leaders. Miller had clearly been losing both loft and yards off his punts for the last 3 weeks. I also think he's been MIA on Felger's Tuesday show - probably because Felgie has been on his diminished kicks for a couple of weeks.

I thought Miller got hurt during a punt runback a few games back... Miami maybe? He was trying to make the tackle but only got an arm on the returner. Hanging an arm out on a runner is an easy way to injure your shoulder.

We have injured punter. We have an injured holder. We don't know how serious the injury is.

The FO looked around at the unemployed punters and holders and were able to find one that they were more comfortable with than the rookie on the Practice Squad.

There is no question that Walter is a good holder. If he is truly healthy, as it seems, his punting should be adequate, or at least better than that to be expected from those that are available. If not, the FO will test a few more.

This signing shows the quality of our FO. We have often called this "the shadow roster process". Pioli always has players on speeddial in case someone is injured.

We have had our share of injuries this year, but no worse than most teams (consider Seattle or the Giants). The issue in the secondary was predictable. We took our risks with regard to the number of secondary position players on the 53, and we are paying off some yet again. HOWEVER, what this really means is that bb is still OK with Brown at nickel rather than having Poteat or someone else on the roster; and he is clearly OK with Brown instead of Spann.

Personally, I like Poteat at nickel instead of Brown, and Poteat at dime back instead of a linebacker. But, that is my personal choice. The coaches are fine with Brown and Sanders, and with linebackers in coverage.

The coaches have made their decisions and we are leading the conference in points allowed. We are second only to the Bears in that stat. Our point differential is second only to San Diego in the AFC. So, I guess our secondary is good enough. We sometimes underestimate the value of picking up Hawkins, Chad Scott and Sanders. They were are our depth. They are now our very effective starters.

Speaking of punters...WHY do all of our punters, when punting from inside the opponents 40-50 yard line always kick it right down the middle of the field and, most of the time, into the end zone. Whatever happened to kicking the ball towards the coffin corner?......Must be the special teams coaching instructions.

Well placing the ball is Walter's specialty. Unfortunately he does it just as well from the 50 as from our own 5, so whether the opponents start on their own 2 or on our 40 depends on where the ball is punted from with him.

God he's horrendous. They couldn't have found anyone better? Anyone at all?

Maybe something is really wrong with Miller???

I may even be wrong, but my reaction to the speculation that Miller might be injured has long been, "Duh!"

Miller did an exceptional job last year doing it his way. Of course, you know better.

* You don't really see any punter do that anymore. They try and drop it in between the 10 and GL and hope thier guy gets it or it bounces backwards or dies there. A lost art for sure. The big difference between Miller and Walter is that when Miller hits a 35 yarder you wonder what went wrong. When Walter does it you think, nice punt Ken -:) I have to thinkthey signed Walter for his holding skills as much as anything. Don't wanna unnerve the Ghost. If they are both active Sunday, maybe walter holds, Miller has a bad shoulder, and Miller punts, except Miller hasn't been ounting well either.
that kid Baugher on the PS must suck or can't hold for PK's.
