Defense will and always will win championships.

The patriots have not had a real great defense in almost a decade. Sure tom played off, but the patriots or ant team should not be 1 player or bust.

Re: This should not shock anyone

Greetings,
This loss was more about bad special teams play, which gave them great field position , seems they always started drives around or past midfield, and not capitalizing on early scoring opportunities. Though this defense is in no way legendary, I cannot say they are the reason for this loss.

Peace,

Re: This should not shock anyone

I personally think the offense was this issue this game. Too many 3 and outs

Re: This should not shock anyone

The offense had its worst day in 9-10 weeks. I am clearly disappointed in the offense but are team is still young and hopefully Brady won't throw a terrible interception in the playoffs next season.

Shocked me. They played better than us today and thats what counts. I'm shocked they played better than us. I'm shocked by the stupid interception. By not taking chances and kicking FG's>Think back to sb42. Why defensive players can't field direct snaps? Why hall of fame hall of fame QB's decide to turn into McNabb in the 4th quarter and hike the ball with 5 seconds left on the play clock with no urgency?

Yeah,so excuse me for being a little shocked by a team that was supposed to be championship caliber, play like the 92 Patriots today. Dumb mistakes and a hint of Vegas seems to get me in a bad mood.

Re: This should not shock anyone

I said going into the playoffs that the only team that could beat us was us, and that was true today. We beat ourselves. We were outcoached and seem unprepared. Brady looked lost out there for some reason. Football is alot about enthusiasm and energy, we had none. Yes it was a good season but the regular season doesnt matter.

Re: This should not shock anyone

The defense wasn't bad this year and our offense was incredible. This team could have won the Super Bowl this year, no doubt.

Re: This should not shock anyone

14-2 record then losing in the first round? Not shocked but surprised. I am not used to teams talking crap all week then backing it up with a win. I guess the days of the pats putting teams in their places as long over.

Re: This should not shock anyone

This isn't the 80s Niners or the 90s Cowboys. The Pats went waaay against the odds in winning three early this decade. Elite teams no longer have eight Hall of Fame players. A lot of the playoffs comes down to a few momentum swings and wrinkles in the gameplan. That's why we've been so successful, but why we lost today.

Brady did look confused today, and that is because he does not have a bail-out receiver who can always be counted on to beat teams over the top and have the athleticism to burn defenses. This is exactly why the Patriots were successful, but also the reason for their failure.

Re: This should not shock anyone

The defense was hung out to dry today. The Jets had 4 possessions start in our territory and the offense didn't sustain drives except when we were down 10 and less than 10 mins to go in the game

This is basically what we saw with last year's defense when our offense couldn't do jack in 2nd halves, you hang em out to dry enough eventually they will look bad. Our defense definitely was better this year, but I still think the 2009 defense gets a bad rap when they were hung out to dry so much, this is what happens. If our offense would have played a half decent game and our special teams/turnovers didn't set up the Jets so well, we give up maybe half as many points and it is a solid outing.

Thats why 06,07 and 10 suck so bad. Each team was good enough to win.
But I'll tell you what, get us a guy that can put consistent pressure on the passer and we'll be back with a vengeance next year.

Re: This should not shock anyone

This loss is a shock (not devastating as life does go on but it is shocking).

This team had been playing lights out for the last month and a 1/2 both offensively and defensively.

Brady had never been playing better.

The team had a solid running game.

They had been dominant at home.

We saw match-up problems for Hernandez, Gronk, etc in the middle of the field.

Sanchez has been marginal in the playoffs and the only close losses this team had experienced in the regular season were those that required the opposing team to throw a high number of completions on 3rd down.

Seems to me like just cause to revive the "does Brady still care" discussions ...Not being sarcastic. Even though he lost last weekend, I still think a win means more to Manning or Big Ben than Brady at this stage because Brady was spoiled with such early success

Re: This should not shock anyone

Actually this was a shock. The way the Pats offense has performed no one except the jets thought they would win this game.

While this season was a blast overall, I never really felt like they were shoe ins. Even after 45-3. Even after the big wins against Baltimore, Pittsburgh and Indy.

The truth is, when this season started I thought they were a year away from contending and even though the season was a lot of fun with a lot of unexpected twists and turns, that's about where they ended up -- a year away.

Moving forward the best thing for the Pats to do is repeat what got them to this point. The seeds for this season were sewn last April. With six picks in the first three rounds I'd like to see some players come off the board.

I'd also like to see some areas addressed in FA, assuming there is FA.

Re: This should not shock anyone

Defense or not this loss is on the Patriots offense today. I'm surprised we did as well as we did with the short fields the Jets had.

Re: This should not shock anyone

You're seriously blaming the defense?

14 of their points came off of short fields set up by a failed onside kick (+ return) and a failed fake punt.

It was an offensive disaster, with the lowlight getting 0 points off a 7+ minute drive.

i still dont get why the **** brady and the offense did not utilize the tight ends more.

Re: This should not shock anyone

I'm shocked as everyone else here but to hear some of the complaints I mean really? Really???? The funniest part is that the people complaining the loudest had this team pegged as a 7 to 9 win team at the MAX in the preseason. I got an idea take a valium, level out and realize that this team had a great season that ended in disappointment, the same disappointment as 31 other teams. We're on the upswing.

Re: This should not shock anyone

Great regular seasons mean nothing, the Pats haave proven this twice in the past 4 years. They have also proven they can't win the big anymore without a top defense.
