Forget League MVP, the outrage should be over Comeback Player of the Year

I don't think either Vick or Welker are the typical candidate for Comeback Player of the Year. Both played last season, Vick played sporadically and Welker played all season without serious injury until the final game. I also think that the Award is intended for someone recovering from injury or, maybe, for someone who played atypically badly and then returned to his usual form. That definitely doesn't fit rehabbing from a felony.

Sporting News named Vick over Welker as comeback player of the year

B.S. if you ask me

I'd take Henderson, Urlacher, or Welker before I'd take Vick.

One of the criteria for the award is greatly elevating your performance in comparison to the previous year. So, yes, you can "come back from sucking" and you CAN win it if you were in the league the previous year. Those making the case for Welker could be asked "What did he come back from? He got hurt the last game of the season and didn't miss a quarter in 2010". An argument can be made for a lot of players, which is precisely why this award doesn't really mean much.

Geez, I thought we were Patriots fans where all that mattered was the team. I didn't realize we were all of a sudden Colts fans obsessed with individual awards.

There's no set criteria for this particular award. There's no rule that says the player has to miss the previous season. I have no problem with it being awarded to a guy who was on an active roster and played in 2009, my problem lies simply with the fact that it was given to such a scumbag.

As for Welker, the unfortunate reality is his candidacy was weakened primarily by the fact that he didn't really miss much action. He has had the quietest 7-month injury I can ever remember.

I feel like people are forgetting one of the more obvious contenders - Mike Williams of the Seahawks.

I heard the league wanted to give it to Tedi Bruschi but they were afraid Jets, Dolphins and Bills fans might commit mass suicide.

I read yesterday that Vick is a shoe in for that award...WTF?? Vick was in the league last year and played some significant minutes. This is not his comeback year.

Wes rewrote the book on healing from an ACL and is close to catching another 100 balls...why isn't he being mentioned for this award? Heck, even Greg Camarillo would be a better candidate. He came back from Cancer.

Vick's having a great year, but why are people (analysts) trying to shoe horn him into every award out there, I'll never know.

Welker is also coming off a 123 reception season...there is no way he wins it, even with the injury he hasnt elevated his play like Vick did from basically doing nothing last year.

I thought about that, but Williams would be trying to get in on the same criteria as Vick, and because of that, I don't think he had a shot.

Some Pats fans think they're actually on the team and take this "one game at a time" or "totally about the TEAM" approach, but fans are allowed leeway. It's entertainment, and fans are allowed to enjoy the team any way they see fit.

Meh. If they want to throw him a bone (haha) with an award, than let him have this one. At least the stupidity in claiming he was regular season MVP has subsided, except for the usual sources that can be safely ignored by any rational person.

OK, from Wikipedia:

So I guess by that definition, Vick can get it...and I guess deserves it.

I don't know, this part of the definition can describe Welker:

The player named Comeback Player of the Year shows perseverance in overcoming adversity, in the form of not being in the NFL the previous year, a severe injury, or simply poor performance

Welker came back from a severe injury and regained top form this season. It doesn't matter if he missed 1 game last year or 15.

I'm not trying to be a homer with this, but I don't understand the theory that players have to miss x% of the previous season with an injury to qualify for the award.

Coming back from a very serious injury and having a great season is a comeback no matter how it's sliced. Is it enough to top Vick's comeback? That's going to be a hard one. Not only did Vick come back from a prison sentence, but he did so in a near MVP season.

Without Vick though, I think Welker is easily the award winner imo.

The guy who started this thread has contradicted themselves by saying Vick shouldn't get it because he played significant time, only to say Welker should get it. I think it should go to somebody like Mike Williams from Seattle
