2011 Early Draft Game

The Draft Value Chart needs to be updated. The league has changed from a superstar dominated field to depth and balance. The other day, someone wrote that the Pats could trade #17, their first, and #33 for the fourth overall pick, according to the chart. Are you insane? It's obvious that the league has evolved since Jimmy Johnson wrote this thing up, and even with the new rookie wage cap, it still won't be close.

Hmmm. I was thinking the chart would finally be relevant again to the top third of the first round.

You think 17, 32 and 33 isn`t fair value for 4?

I like that trade of 17 and 74 for 21 and 53
I would also do 53 and 96 for 40
One more-64 for 83 and a '12 3rd

21 DE Heyward
32 G-Hudson--or best G/C available
33 LB B.Carter-WILL with potential super upside
40 RB Ingram-everyone likes this pick but no way he is here
83 DE Jordan-again no way he is here
2012 3rd-more ammo for next year
I took 2 DEs but who knows about Wright and if we can resign Warren

I wouldn't make that deal even with a rookie cap in place. That'd be Mike Iupati, Patrick Robinson, and Roger Saffold for Trent Williams. That'd be Josh Freeman, Ziggy Hood, and Louis Delmas for Aaron Curry. That'd be Gosder Cherilus, Phillip Merling, and Donnie Avery for Darren McFadden.

Obviously any pick can be a bust, but there are generally only a few really premium elite guys in a draft, and after that, there isn't a huge difference between say the #5 overall pick and the #32 overall pick. To trade basically 3 first-rounders for a marginal upgrade on a not-sure thing seems insane.

At the time, many here would have made the trade for Curry. I agree that the draft value is not in the top 15. IMHO, the draft value is more in 16-64 range. We have 7 core contributers from this range in the last two drafts. I expect us to add another 3-4 (we have four picks at present), with ability for another if we wihed to move up from the 3rd.

To me, the question of moving up is not whether we want to move into the top 10. Rather it is whether we want to move up from the 3rd to get yet another second.

I'd be fine with 5 picks in the top 64 and the normal late flyers.

I expect that it more likely that Belichick trades down from 17 than up. However, I certainly could see him being tempted by several players at 17 or right around there. For example, I could see him being satisfied with 3 guards, trading down a bit and getting his man.

Not crazy about trading down from 17. Two of our bigger needs are olb and de. But, both have to be able to do it in a 3-4. Six teams between 18-31 also run a 3-4; SD, KC, GB, NY Jets, Baltimore and Pittsburgh. Don't want to give them a crack at somebody we might want. I also wouldn't be against trading up a litte from 32(Hopefull). Jets and Steelers could really use a 3-4 de. If we get that olb/de type(I know I'm dreaming but hear me out say R. Kerrigan), we might even want to move up to get that 3-4 de too before other 3-4 teams snap him up. A guy like; Watt, Heyward, Wilkerson or Jordan. If we go 3-4 de at 17, then I think we will trade either 32 or 33 though. There don't appear to be as many options for that 3-4 olb. Many people like Aldon Smith. But, being a redshirt soph. And, being injured for a decent part of this year is goint to negatively affect his rating.

That's the 3rd time I've seen Wilkerson mentioned in this thread so I decided to look into him.

This article seems pretty positive.
Temple Defensive Tackle Muhammad Wilkerson Looks NFL Ready | Bleacher Report

At 6'5 305 he certainly has the size we're looking for in a 3-4 DE.
My primary concerns.
1. Level of competition in the MAC isn't very strong.
2. Does he have the strength to take on double teams.
3. Can he play 5 tech or is he more suited for 1-gap attacking defenses?

Just for fun check this out. Temple practices appear to be really intense and fun. Wow. Skip to about 4:00 mark to get to Wilkerson's interview. I do like how he deflects praises and gives credit to the coaching and the other players. Textbook BB talk. And yeah keep watching. The practice footage is fun!
Item 1: The level of competition in the MAC is better than you credit. As of Jan 10, 2011 the NEP have six MAC players under contract between the Active roster, IR, & the Practice Squad. Yes, the BCS conferences dominate the roster, but Mid-Majors like the MAC, WAC, and C-USA have respectable representation amongst NE's key role players and developing projects.
Item 2: Yes, he consistently had to deal with double-teams in the games I watched.
Item 3: Yes, watching him reminded me of a blend of Ty Warren and Mike Wright to use current roster comparisons.

I see alot of people talking about Heyward. Doesn't he sound just like Gholston 2.0? Freak athlete, big and strong, questionable motor. I think we should stay away from him.

i think with our first pick if we trade up it will b for dareus or peterson, if we stay put or trade back a few it will b aaron williams, brandon harris, or possible a stefen w., cam jordan-freak strong possibility with our first pick-rich mans mike wright, tyron smith, or derrek sherrod, mark ingram.

:idontgetit: Why cough up a 4th just to move up one spot?

Because, by some amazing psychic powers, he guessed that was the very last spot where the OT he wanted would still be available. ;)

Everybody...you know that this kind of game only works if you don't peek ahead, right? Try starting with the #1 ranked guy at the bottom of your screen, then scroll up one name at a time. If you get to #14 or 15 and see a player hanging around who's worth trading up for, great. Otherwise just look at who's available after 16 and make your move, without omniscience. (It's more interesting that way, honest!)

Of course! It's just a lot less fun for guys like you. (I know because I always get bored playing the "guess who the Patriots drafted last year" game.)

:D

In all fairness, the Pats made a comparable move for Ty Warren in 2003. I can't remember what round the pick was, so I based it on the trade chart.

Yeah, your trade was actually plausible. Some of the others, trading 3 picks for 3 slightly different picks that just barely landed some key players, are a little harder to swallow. :)

Just to be fair, I'll play the game based on my own rules:

*#17 -- Not in love with anybody. Will trade down 2 slots, in exchange swapping my late 4th for that team's 3rd, #83 overall. That should be a useful point in this draft.

*#19 -- Still not overjoyed, but I'm going to take a leap of faith and say that Ryan Kerrigan, DE/OLB showed some decent athleticism when I brought him to Gillette for a private workout.

#32 -- Muhammad Wilkerson, DE. My front 7's looking a little nastier now.

#33 -- Derek Sherrod, OT. Interior OL is a bigger need, but I like Sherrod's agility for the Pats' scheme.

#64 -- Jimmy Smith, DB. A big, physical CB with intriguing potential at safety.

#74 -- Stanley Havili, RB/FB. Thrilled he's still on the board. Big runner who looks equally at home running, blocking and catching the ball. Approaching binky territory -- he'll make the offense even more unpredictable.

*#83 -- Cameron Jordan, DE. Just realized he was still on the board, can't resist the value. Could be a rich man's Jarvis Green.

#96 -- Danny Watkins, OL. Potential RT, RG or LG.

I am all for trading up now.
a 15 pick can be signed for 5 yrs instead of 4. What every you pay to move 2 stops is not big enough if you can get an impact player for 5 instead of 4 years.

we are really need

1) DE .a 310-315 LB tall one [2-3 picks on DE/OLB] .
2) Gaurd/S
3) WR with speed and hands
