Jerod Mayo leads the NFL in tackles

Except when you want to argue that Mayo is an elite MLB because he has 40 more tackles than any other player.

164-145=19 not 40 :D

Just thought I'd let you know :)

Doesn't mean crap to me. They are winning, he is the middle linebacker.
As long as they are winning I could care less how many tackles he has.

The discussion is about Mayo individually and his tackling skills, not on the teams success. Good for you that you don't care about stats. Many people do look at stats and as much as I realize that stats don't determine how good a player is, they are still good to compare with his on field performance and to the performance of others.

The following should be pretty self-explanatory:

Code:
Name Tackles	Snaps	T/S
[B]Mayo 164	938	0.17[/B]
Tulloch 145	995	0.15
Greenway	127	839	0.15
Posluszny	126	936	0.13
Fletcher	124	925	0.13
Lews 124	875	0.14
[COLOR="DimGray"]Whitner[/COLOR]		124	936	0.13
Timmons 121	861	0.14
Willis 116	886	0.13
Anderson	115	921	0.12
[COLOR="DimGray"]Ward[/COLOR]		114	921	0.12
Jones 113	844	0.13
Grayed out names are safeties, the rest are linebackers.

Love when someone uses actual evidence to debunk everyones theory that he only has X amount of tackles because he is on the field longer than everyone else because of our **** d... has the highest tackle per snap ratio of those top 10... check mate

And if you look at the numbers even if he played the same amount of snaps as greenway (the fewest on that list) he would still be leading the league by 1 tackle

Let me make up a scenario. I say again, this is FICTIONAL.

But lets imagine that on every play, the opposing offense rushed right up the middle, and knocked Mayo on his back, then tripped over his body. Mayo gets +1 tackle. This happens on all 65 defensive plays. Mayo finishes with 65 tackles. This happens every game over the season. Mayo has like 1,000 tackles because he gets run over, then the defender simply trips on him. Is he the best player in the NFL?

All he posted was a chart that shows that Mayo has the most tackles on a team by a large amount. It doesn't say anything else. I also don't think our D sucks, I think they stay on the field longer than most and have a poor 3rd down stopping %. They create more turnovers than all but a few teams. And the fact that they are on the field for more plays leads to ....thats right, more tackles for the leading tackler! Wow that's tough.

Dude, we're being trolled hard here.

So someone brings up hard stats, which you dismiss in favor of a hypothetical, and a poor one at that? I hope you understand why people aren't taking you seriously. I don't think I've seen anyone claim that Mayo is "all-world" or even the best LB in the NFL, but I have seen plenty of people point to this as evidence that Mayo has been a very solid contributor to this defense and that he has POTENTIAL to be a huge player as he develops big play ability.

Actually that chart shows Mayo makes more tackles per snap than any other leading tackler, which, depending on how you look at it, means either he is a very good ballhawk or is exceptional at playing from his back.

I haven't denied his potential, or current ability. But he doesn't make big plays often. Until he does he won't get respect apart from being a very solid MLB and a sure tackler.

One of the very first posts was calling him the best in the NFL (or maybe AFC), and there was another thread recent full of people calling him the best.

How is tackle/snap any better proof than my fictional scenario? It just shows that Mayo makes the most tackles on the NEP, which is fairly obvious. Putting that number next to another player on another team doesn't mean anything because the number of snaps the defenses play are different. The style of defense is different. The personell around them are different.

Mayo gets alot of tackles on a defense with 3rd down issues. That doesn't make the defense awful. That doesn't make Mayo awful. It doesn't make him amazing either. He's a great player, who tackles well. Nothing more right now though, but that doesn't mean he can't or won't improve.

.

Doesn't make big plays often, how do you quantify that?? What does that mean??? Do you want to have a new stat; tackles, assists and "big plays"?? That is probably the stupidest thing that have heard in a long time.

Perhaps you are watching a different game, personally would prefer a consistent MLB than a guy who makes "big plays"...

Talk about beating a f...ing dead horse, no matter how you try to twist this to meet your argument, you make less sense as this thread continues...

If you were to ask knowledgeable NFL people about his play this year, he would get very good reviews.. not based on "big plays", but because he is a very consistent player and is emerging into a defensive leader..

Best MLB in the AFC?

Alright, I'll concede. Mayo leads the league in tackles. He's probably the best MLB in the NFL. Good debate you've all convinced me with your compelling arguments and hard "stats" that tackles are the end-all argument of who is the best. Merry Christmas, all!

Ok name 3 MLBs in the AFC and 5 MLBs in the NFL that are better using your standards

Loving Mayo today, I REALLY love him when he is doing more than just tackling, he's doing more attacking today, instead of reacting.

And starting to make some big plays for us. Forced a fumble and recovered the fumble Guyton forced today.

Completely agree, it's nice to see the 'agressive' Mayo who can really drill a guy when he has a chance.

That said, don't be surprised in the LEAST if he gets a fine for a couple of his hits today...I don't think anything was dirty in the least but he had at least one h-2-h hits and the other monster hit seems the type they love to fine just for the hell of it this season. In fact, I could see a few different fines coming the Pats way considering McCourty got one last week. Whatever, this defense was impressive today, I could care less!

All of his hits looked clean unless I missed a few. He just made people fear the middle of the field today in my opinion. More games like this and he can really step up to be one of the best, a true play maker as opposed to an extremely solid insurance policy in the middle.

Awesome game form him today.

There was one hit over the middle that looked like H2H, but on replay, it looked like Page nailed him in the back which is why the receiver's head snapped back so suddenly. It didn't touch Mayo's helmet at all.

Still, I wouldn't be surprised by any fine these days.

It would be near criminal to fine for his hits. They all appear textbook and what the NFL is preaching.

Maybe I'm thinking of someone else but there was definitely a helmet to helmet hit at one point that wasn't flagged, maybe mid-1st quarter.

Regardless, hell of a game from Mayo and he really seems to be playing 'unleashed', physical football, which is great to see!

I think today's game was his best as a Patriot but yeah, as some said, don't be surprised if he gets fined.

He was laying the lumber out there- great to see!
