Safeties next year?

Safety play is presently a STRENGTH of this team. I see no reason to move from the rotation of Sanders, Meriweather and Chung, with Sergio Brown as an emergency safety and special teamer. The #4 is Page who had played very well indeed. If Page can be re-signed, I see us more than complete, with Lockett and Barrett as possibilities in camp.

I see absolutely no reason for dumping Meriweather. He is certainly at least a quality backup for us. He is NOT a liability as a backup.
======================

That being said, the issue for me (the only issue) is that both Sanders and Meriweather will be in their contract years. No one knows which will be signed for 2012. So, yes, we will look for a safety in the draft, but there will no pressure at all. If the value and player is there, then we'll draft one.

But there is no need and no room on the roster. Consider if we found another Chung at 33 and dumped Meriweather. The team would be likely be WEAKER for 2011. A rookie safety is not at all likely to contribute as much as Meriweather, and is unlikely to be able to start if needed. Getting rid of Meriweather makes no sense to me. It reminds of all the times posters wanted to dump Sanders.

There's no way he stays as a backup. You don't want a problem child as a backup, why would you? you get the problems without the production, just stirring trouble.

He either straightens up, or he starts until they get rid of him.

Meriweather is fine. I expect he and Chung will be starting, with Sanders and Page rotating in.

Curiously not all players are starters. If Faulk stays, he won't be a starter. He'll likely be our #5 RB.

The highest rated Senior Safety is currently a 2nd rounder. That could change come the combine. Also, I don't know if there are any junior safeties who are rumored to be declaring who might fall into the 1st round.

That being said, I don't know if there are any safeties of Meriweather's talent. However, as we know, talent isn't everything. Heart, Desire, and a willingness to learn the BB way is just as important.

That being said, why not snag a good CB and give Arrington a shot at Free Safety...? I don't think he's a terrific athlete, but he has the all qualities you outlined and is a pretty good tackler. Don't know about his instincts though. BB had this to say last Wednesday:

Belichick on CB Kyle Arrington: "Kyle's a guy that works hard. He did a good job for us last year. On special teams, he led the team in tackles. He was very productive, had a good training camp. He's got good speed. He's tough; he tackles well. He's aggressive. When he's had an opportunity, he's done a good job at taking advantage of it."

Why send away a player who is consistently good enough to get consistent playing time from a coach who won't give playing time to a player unless it is earned every week? And when the act of trading that player will cost $1M in dead cap space that will handicap the team in other player acquisitions?

It makes no sense.

Faulk is the absolute model of a team player, a virtual coach on the field. To mention him in the same breath as Meriweather, in this regard, is ludicrous.

Meriweather has lots of talent, but he's already been benched for not executing the game plan and being late to a meeting.

A backup player needs to be ready to play and a good locker room guy. Players with lots of talent that are bad apples might succeed as starters for ego, but they make the worst possible backups. the think they should be in the game, obviously lack discipline, so they aren't supporting the team.

Players with less physical talent, but great attitudes make the best backups. They make sure they are ready on a moments notice and are great cheerleaders and locker room guys.

Pats essentially have 3 starters at safety though. Chung,Sanders,& Meriweather have all been getting a lot of playing time.

Having a rotation of Meriweather, Chung and Sanders is a luxury that few teams have. Chung has been dinged up, McGowen always hurts himself--a lot of these guys are like RBs: short shelf life, constantly banged up, etc. As it stands, if Bodden comes back strong next season, we will have one of the best secondaries in the league if they can stay healthy.

I agree that it makes no sense to move Meriweather. Drafting his eventual replacement if the right guy is there makes the most sense. Don't know what goes on behind the scenes, but I'm not going to call for a trade based on one horribly ugly play, being benched a couple of times, or being late for a meeting.

Sorry Jack, Merriweather will be gone next year.

From him running inside on a WR screen to CJ Spiller to running into McCourty was absolutely ridiculous.

I will eat crow if he is not traded in the off season.

I can't believe I'm saying this but Sanders is a better safety than Merriweather.

Re: Safties next year?

I hope Pollard drives his car off of a cliff.

haha i was just gonna type the same thing. Why would we want pollard back, only to hit him in the head with his own helmet

So you disagree with belichick; no big deal. Belichick has used Meriweather as a starter this year, or at worst part of a 3-man rotation. Even if a rookie is brought in, it will likely take him a year to develop. Why would Belichick dump Meriweather? At worst, he is insurance while the rookie develops.

Wow. Really?

Wasn't Tebucky Jones a starter before they traded him?

What about Mike Vrabel?

Didn't they cut Lawyer Milloy right before the season started in 2003?

Dumb argument.

Re: Safties next year?

Just last year, Merriweather was our best DB. He's certainly one of the better safeties in the league. He's had some bad plays, so does everyone else.

As far as his maturity or supposed lack thereof, he is still a young guy. Everyone matures at a different pace.

Sanders is the perfect 3rd safety, so I would keep him as well.

To be frank, our DBs are not as bad as the stats indicate. It's our lack of pass rush that is killing us.

You simply don't understand. If Meriweather sux, there is absolutely zero reason to give him playing time. Belichick would simply start Chung and Sanders. Belichick also has Page as part of 3 safety rotation. Sergio Brown could play if there are injuries.

No, Meriweather is playing because Belichick think that he adds to team. He is getting so many reps because for Belichick he is a better option than others.

Sure, Belichick can do whatever he wants. He can create a hole at safety for no particular reason. IMHO, that won't happen. But to put it bluntly, it is not reasonable to believe that Meriweather sux or that he doesn't add to the quality of this defense.

We disagree; that's fine. I've heard this nonsense about James Sanders for eyars; now it is Meriwether's turn. As with Sanders, there is exactly ONE place where the quality of Meriweather's play is thought to be terrible. That one place is among poster on this board.

for short money, I would like to see page back next year........he was hurt all of 2009 and wound up on IR....he's got good size and can find the ball as 10 INT's in his first 3 years shows.......I don't think he had enough opportunities this year

I understand completely but you simply let the examples in my last post go right over your head.

Just because he plays right now, does not mean he will be back next season.

Do you understand that?

I agree. BTW, I see no problem with him being brought back even for the number of reps he has played this year. I would sign him to a 3 year contract if we can. This would give us a 3rd safety signed for 2012 (along with Chung and Brown). Lockett or Barrett would also be ours as RFA's if they are still around. Signing Page would be nice insurance against Sanders or Meriweather leaving in 2012.
