OT: Does anyone realize what Philip Rivers is doing?

His arrogant/abrasive demeanor and his personal foibles in the post season probably have a lot to do with how some still view him. A QB has to be more than a passing machine. He has to be a positive leader and not a whiner and a finger pointer (at least until he actually wins something).

7 Games 134 229 58.5% 1820 8 9 79.2

A lot of people remember us staggering past them on the road to the AFCC. Well, Phillip staggered that day, too.

A lot of other people remember Philip Rivers playing with a torn ACL that required surgical repair and almost beating the Patriots in a playoff game at Foxborough. Helluva player.

Maybe everyone should stop dwelling on which QB, Brady or Manning, has it tougher this year and who is doing better with limited talent at receiver.

Philip Rivers is on pace to break the record for passing yards in a season. He is doing it with more injured players than anyone else. Rivers should have won the MVP last year, beating Manning in most statistical categories and cruising to a 13-3 record with a worse defense than the Colts.

Take a look at what Rivers did today. Granted Houston has a very poor secondary, but nonetheless, check this out:

Jackson- Still not back from holdout
Floyd- Injured
Nenee- Injured
Gates- Injured

Are you telling me that Seyi Ajirotutu and Patrick Crayton are better options than guys like Welker, Branch, Hernandez, Wayne, Garcon, etc? Why is this guy never discussed as a serious MVP candidate? He's always just a token "B" candidate.
Stats compiled in a loss have lesser value than stats compiled in a win.

You are aware the stats referenced were compiled in a win at Houston, right?

Personal foilbles in the postseason? Can you clarify? And arrogant??....really? People may not like his mouthyness and chatter, but to each his own. He will never be a football "gentleman" like Brady, etc. But he's gritty and competitive. I thinks that's something alot of other players and fans dont get about him. He's probably the most competitive person on the team....or any team for that matter. I dont recall him ever being a whiner or finger pointer. He may need a better filter, but he speaks the truth.

I'll go ahead and clarify for him: if it's not Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, and the New England Patriots... it's clearly crap.

Sounds about right... I've missed you Kontra.

Don't let the low profile fool you, Seyi Ajirotutu is a big time player. One of my binkies from this past April :D

I know a lot of people here don't care for Rivers, but in my opinion I think he's having an MVP year to this point. He won't get it though, because voters don't consider players - especially quarterbacks - on losing teams.

He would absolutely get my MVP, winning team or not.

Amazing stats by Rivers.

By the way, Manning's rating yesterday was 65.7. So, apparently, even he needs quality receivers and/or a running game to do well.

Tell your forum that I really didn't mean any offense by making my location "Your mother's ass", and that I don't see why that was deemed banable.

First of all, what has Rivers ever done in the offseason that could be considered a personal foible? The only reason why he has a bad reputation in some people's eyes is because of two incidents; the Christmas game against the Broncos a few years back when he and Jay Cutler were yelling at each other; which by the way Cutler instigated when he grabbed his groin and cussed at the Chargers sideline. Cutler has shown himself to be a low class loser of a QB who blames everyone else but himself for his poor play. Here's a clip of that incident. The camera only caught the part with Rivers yelling at Cutler; it didn't catch the part before that where he was holding his groin and yelling at the Chargers sideline. Anyone watching the clip though should automatically wonder why Cutler is the only Bronco still standing out on the field when the rest of his offense already went to the sideline; clearly he was the instigator:

The other incident was the playoff game against the Colts in the 2nd round when Rivers was caught on camera jawing at some fans on the sideline. He never cussed at them; he's just got the kind of personality where he likes to talk trash to anyone and everyone including the fans who instigate him. He hasn't jawed at the fans since that incident though so I figure that the coach must have told him to cut that out. But, he still talks trash to players on the field and a lot of defensive players respect that. Joey Porter said that of all the QBs in the league, he likes playing against Rivers the most because whenever he talks trash to Rivers, he gets it right back whereas Manning and Brady just ignore him.

I don't know about you but I like my QB to have a fiery personality; some people prefer the quiet Tom Brady type but clearly the fiery personality works for Rivers and is not affecting his level of play. A QB can't elevate his game to the level of Brady just by being quiet; both Brady and Rivers are elite QBs regardless of their personality. Off the field Rivers is a devote Catholic and a family man; he has like 5 kids last time I checked and he never goes out to party with the rest of the team; playing basketball with Antonio Gates or golf with some of the players is all he does outside of football, family, and faith. He drives a ford pickup truck as his only vehicle so that should let you know what kind of person he is, but I should let him tell you in his own words:

what he doing? Oh yea, holding on to a losing record

Currently, the top tier of QBs is Manning, Brees, and Rivers. It's clearly been that way the last two years. The thing holding TB back is that he (understandably) bails out on too many throws since the injury. I'm not sure if that is the same problem Carson Palmer has had since his injury, but I hope he is able to overcome it at some point.

LOL What's the matter Kontra...he your fantasy QB?

on another note, manning is on pace to have 700 pass attempts.

and people wonder why all these WR's are getting their heads knocked off.....

Does anyone realize what Philip Rivers is doing?

Whining, losing, and throwing the ball a lot? :confused2:

YouTube - Philip Rivers: Faith, family, football... in that order.

Typical Supercharger fan. I cite post season performance and you naturally interpret that term as pertaining to the off season...

Part of being an elite QB is being a team leader and being a concensus builder and a leadership force in the locker room and on the practice fields and being able to both challenge those around you while building support and trust among themselves and the staff. Rivers has been part of the problem in SD all along. Arrogant and headstrong and outspoken like the underperforming purported mega talents who surrounded him. He never made them better, he just encouraged their natural tendancies. His behavior following the 2006 division playoff loss against us was as typically classless as any Charger in defeat...

You guys admire his fire? Jake Delhomme had fire... You admire his toughness...Drew Bledsoe was physically tough... You're impressed by yardage...yardage is for losers.

Nah, I traded him for Braylon Edwards and kept Roethlisberger. :ugh:

Anyway, I don't understand why you're attempting to sweep what he's doing under the rug. It's okay, you can admit that you're impressed. Nobody is going to disown you as a Pats fan for daring to admit that other players on other teams are actually playing extremely well this year. After all, they aren't huge rivals with the Patriots anymore.

Me? I'm impressed. He's taking a receiving corps that makes our's look like Swann and Stallworth and is on pace to set a record with them. On top of all of that, he's doing it without any steady contribution from their running game which means that defenses are gearing up to stop him and their second rate WR's. In other words, he's currently in the midst of an MVP campaign.

I'm not impressed any more than I'm impressed when Eli manages to snag a ring or Cutler (or Bulger or McNabb or the aging Favre or Schaub or Vince Young) are being touted as elite based on empty yardage and passing stats while repeatedly failing to accomplish anything meaningful from a team perspective... I guess that is why fantasy football holds zero fascination for me. It's not remotely related to the NFL game that does fascinate me on or off the field. Where the true value player is the one who finds ways to facilitate winning as a team.
