Ravens Week

So it sounds like they can stop the run if they concentrate on doing that. Against the Pats, you have to believe they'll be trying to stop Brady. The lack of sacks and INTs is indeed a concern though if I'm a Raven fan. Last year, Suggs had a major impact on both games. IMO, if the Pats can neutralize him and keep the offense balanced, Brady will have a great day.

The problem with Suggs is he is both a pass rushing terror and formidable against the run. He may not get off as fast as Cameron Wake does, but if the tackles can't hold him, we can't just do what we did on MNF and run the ball at him instead.

About the possibility of Wilfork playing end and Mike Wright playing nose. Make no mistake, Baltimore will run the ball wherever Mike Wright is. I'd rather have that be up the middle. Our linebacking core is stouter down the middle than it is at the edges. Furthermore, some the linebackers and defensive backs struggle when tackling in pursuit. Encouraging the Ravens to run at the middle will mask this deficiency.

Not sure if this has been posted... But I want some Revenge this weekend. Only game I attended last year was this game. Only game I will attend this year is the one on sunday. These Stats are mind boggling. 10 attempts by a qb and the team wins...

Passing Cmp Att Yds TDs
J. Flacco 4 10 34 0
Rushing Car Yds Avg TDs
R. Rice 22 159 7.2 2
W. McGahee 20 62 3.1 1
Receiving Rec Yds Avg TDs
M. Clayton 1 17 17 0

This game could go so many different ways its not even funny...
A lot of people think this game will go like our first game last year (goddammit clayton! I'm still mad about that drop)...which it very well could.
But to be totally honest, both these teams look like they are about to erupt. One way or the other, it is very possible that one of us takes a thorough ass kicking...obviously I'm hoping we're the ass kicker and not the kickee...but either way, this may not be as close as most people believe.

that was the coldest, most bitter freezing gameday that I've endured in 20 years...what made it worse were the constant delayed draw to Faulk calls that made it easy for the Ravens to hammer.

The OL will really have to play well. They where terrible in that playoffs loss last year!

Yeah, I think you're right. Probably could just as easily be a blowout as a close game. There's a difference between a game being a tossup since it's tough to predict, and the game most likely being very close. It's as if there are even odds for it being close or a blowout, and even odds that either team wins.

I just got done reading "The Blind Side" which tells the amazing story of Oher, and his unbelievably difficult childhood up to his transition into a NFL player (and no I won't watch the movie).

The one thing I did get was that Michael Lewis was somehow building Oher into the next coming- the one hit wonder, and some super freak. I did not get that impression when watching the Ravens game.

But I am sure the Ravens fans have a lot more insight into this than I do. What is your take on the story of Oher?

Oher was drafted to be a LT as the legend suggests. He played RT last year while another young guy played his 2nd season @ LT. You may recall that throughout most of the Ravens' history, LT was held down by future HOFer Jonathan Ogden (the 1st Raven ever drafted who retired after the 2007 season). In 2008 & 2009, we used primarily a 5th round supplemental draftee named Jared Gaither, a big, prototypical LT (tall, quick feet, long arms, etc.). A Maryland native who didn't play organized football till his Sr. year in HS, but nevertheless won a scholarship to Univ. of Maryland after a post-grad year at a military academy. Started his 1st year at U Md, but struggled w/ grades and questionable commitment to the program. Maryland coaches switched him to RT, and he sulked (presumably thinking that he was entitled to the fast-track to LT $). He slacked off on the field and the books, and lost his scholarship after Soph. year. He entered the NFL Supplemental Draft, and the Ravens took a flyer on him in the 5th round. It was starting to look like we had found a steal. Had some injuries (shoulder prob in 2008, neck injury at Foxboro - backboard, unscrewed facemask, the works - in 2009), but was certainly penciled in as a starting OT for 2010, when he decided to avoid off-season training/conditioning with the team (at the apparent suggestion of notorious ******** agent Drew Rosenhaus). Harbaugh made what most assume was a calculated effort to light a fire under his butt by announcing that he was switching Oher to LT and Gaither to RT. Well, 2nd day of mini-camp, Gaither's foot is sore. We don't see him again till training camp when he arrives 30 lbs lighter and comes up w/ a back spasms by day 3. Well, the media & fans (me among them) cry foul: the guy is jaking cause he's mad about the switch, he lost weight to make himself less attractive as a RT, his back & foot problems are due to poor conditioning/training on his own, and all of this is partially orchestrated by Drew Rosenhaus. His doctors say he has a thoracic disk problem, the Ravens doctors can't find anything nor get a straight timely answers from his doctors in Calif., and the guy hasn't seen the field for more than 1 or 2 practices since Aug. 1. We call it Gaither-gate.
Meanwhile, RT backups don't impress in preseason, so we move RG Marshall Yanda to RT (where he's played before, but he was a beast at RG) and put our best sub for G & C in at RG (Chris Chester) leaving us pretty thin at interior OL. This line up is finally starting to gel now, and Gaither is headed to IR or outright release soon (Please God)). It was his contract year, so you'd assume Gaither knew jaking would kinda hurt his marketability as a FA (but remember the kid is only 24), so I personally think he just decided he doesn't like football after all. Thanks for listening - but I know you asked about Oher...

Oher didn't look good subbing at LT for an injured Gaither last year, nor did he look immediately impressive in preseason (though he kept Orakapo of the 'Skins and the NYG rush off Flacco). He's getting the hang of it as this OL gels. He handled Ellis of the Jets tolerably well, and the Pitts. DL also. Denver was *****ing that he was offsides on nearly every play, but the refs called it right if you look at the tapes. He is really just that fast off the snap.
One irony in Gaither-gate is that Oher really is a hard worker/fast learner, high character guy - kind of the polar opposite of Gaither's [perceived] persona. We've got 2 retread vets (Moll & Kooistra), and a 3rd yr project draftee (Cousins) also on the roster at OT, but it seems like we're going to go w/ Yanda @ RT and Oher @ LT through this season, w/ Oher installed from here on out on the "blindside" - life follows art

No Offense MossWelkowski (nice handle btw;)), but did Flacco need to pass in that game?? His hip and ankle were hurt, and all he needed to do was hand off to Rice & Willis. His most impressive moment to me (also in attendance that day) was running about 10 yds to the sidelines & 1st down stick in the 3Q IIRC. Look, I know and I think most Ravens fans know that for whatever reason, the Pats just didn't show up that day. Terrible timing - but it happens. We're gonna see a real game Sunday, and part of the equation will be desire for revenge. Looking forward to it:)

Thanks for the good write up. Very insightful.

Agree on Suggs and Wake - the Pats clearly tried to use Wake's aggressiveness against him. Still, it's been shown that teams can run the ball on the Ravens' D if when it focuses on stopping the pass. As for Vince at DE, I think it was done because so much of Miami's running is designed to be off-tackle. I don't know if the Ravens are like that, but either way I expect Wright's role to be much smaller than last year. The Pats can put Brace, Love, and/or Deaderick in there with the purposes of stuffing the run. And, as you've mentioned, Spikes is better than what we had last year.

Any word on having Taylor back for this game?

He did not practice again today; in fact he was the only player on the Pats roster to miss practice today. Taylor has not practiced once since injuring his toe in week 3 against the Bills, so I'm thinking it is very doubtful that he'll play against the Ravens.

i just saw that the pats are giving up 112+ yards per game ? this will be a huge challenged after they knocked them out last yr by just running up the middle whenever they wanted and flacco having a bad game...

I'm not a big fan of guaging how two teams will play each other based off how they played each other last year. Look at NO and Minny, the opening game was no where near the performance of the NFCCG and both teams have looked like a shell of last year's team. I'm not sure if it will really matter this week.

As far as we are concerned: The Pats are much stronger up the middle than they were last year. Vince was coming off an injury and hadn't played in a few games. Spikes is a much better run stuffer than Guyton. Mayo is healthy and Chung is a beast inside the box.

I'm worried about Nink continuing to get sucked in, instead of setting the edge. Its been happening consistantly over the first 4 games. And hopefully it gets corrected soon. Its not as if he is getting manhandled he just commits to the off tackle play far to early and loses his containment.

but inspite of all the improvements you mentioned we ARE giving up 110+ yards a game considering our pass defense is weak ? shouldnt that be concerning ?
i know everyone is worried about our passing soft defense but if our run D was like the steelers or ravens then i would point the pass d as the glaring weakness...i think the run D weakness hasnt been talked about enough IMO

I mentioned those improvements because you specifically mentioned the middle of the defense. That area has not been a concern at all in the run game. It has been off the edges, especially in sub packages.

The majority of the yards allowed on the ground have come against sub packages (nickel, dime), our base 3-4 has been very stout against the run. I will have to find it, but I am fairly certain that our base unit is allowing less than 4 ypc. An example of that would be the Jets game, we held them to 36 yards on 12 carries in the base 3-4 and then allowed 2 big runs to LT in Nickel late in the game.

Edit: the 31 yarder to LT came against the base group, because Nink missed a tackle.

A Ravens fan here stopping in to say Hello. wish everyone the best of luck in this game. Two great teams and one with the best QB in the league (yes I said it. Manning to me is not the best. To be the best you have to finish. Brady Finishes and Manning Chokes).

I will admit I was not too much for the Pats in the past but my new found extreme dislike for the Jets changed my ways and now I root for Pats.
While I do not want to see the Ravens lose this game, if they do this had better be the W that helps put the Pats above the Jets for the division or I will really be pissed off.

You sure you're not a Pats troll pretending to be a Ravens fan?:D

For those interested, SMY and a writer from the Baltimore Sun, Jamison Hansley conducted a chat session on the Baltimore paper's site today.

Ravens Insider: Chat wrap: Ravens-Patriots Q&A - Baltimore Ravens news, schedule, analysis and opinion from Mike Preston, Jamison Hensley, Edward Lee and Ken Murray - baltimoresun.com

In summary they felt the key for Baltimore will be their ability to run against the Pats. Hansley was asked what Baltimore should fear the most, and he said "Ravens should fear Brady picking apart the Ravens' secondary if they can't get any pressure on him. They should fear a New England defense that has picked off seven passes, returning two of them for TDs. And they should fear Brandon Tate as a kickoff returner. (the Ravens are hoping Billy Cundiff, who leads the NFL with 11 touchbacks, will put kicks deep in the end zone)." In other words, not much that we haven't figured out already. On a poll fans were pretty much evenly split in their predictions on who will win and by how much.
