I don't think anyone picked the pats as a "serious super bowl contender" that year, especially after 6-10 the year before. That team had a ton of weapons but no one expected much beyond a playoff appearance, especially after starting 0-2.

I believe we were actually 5-11 the year before, and we were picked to finish last in the division.

So, yeah, I don't think the expectations were great.

i heard adam v missed 8 FG in his rookie yr...lets just brace for it...he is a rookie thats all...

Adam missed three field goals in his second game.

It's in the Globe article on kickers a week or so ago, per Cappelletti.

Gostkowski clearly has the physical attributes to be a solid kicker. It's just the mental part of his game and that will take a bit. Kickers generally aren't going to be clutch coming right out of college and I think it's clear that Gostkowski is feeling the pressure of replacing Vinatieri. I thought the 55 yarder in the preseason was a good stepping stone towards confidence for him but I'm not going to call for his head for a while now.

Oops! I totally did not read my post before hitting submit.
What I meant to say is that Adam did NOT play for a contender during his growing pains phase...Gost is. sorry for the mistake.

I dont like his field goal kicking so far, but his kickoffs just own.

Bring In The Kickers This Week Put Some Pressure On See What Happens

Yeah he is great as a kickoff specialist but we dont have time to wait for this kid, if he is our FG kicker come playoff tiem I see this as a huge chink in our armor.

Yes, the Pats do have time to wait for "this kid," especially if the O starts getting its act together.

I think Belichick realizes that sending Ghost out for that first kick was probably a mistake.

I do with we could pick Grammatica back up for now - but stupid Vinatieri had to blow that for is . . .

His kick-offs look very impressive. We know we can hit the long feild goals, we saw it in preseason. He needs some time to really get his groove and get the blocks out of his head. And as long as we keep going for TDs, then I figure he has that time.

I think its time to be concerned , not to panic yet...

Well I will reserve judgement but we need to be on the prowl for a vertran if things dont look up in a few weeks.

AS Rousseau noted maybe things are looking off, at least he got one off!

AV's rookie season he missed 7 or 16 attempts greater than 40 yds and only 1 of those was >50 yds.

He missed 1 between 20-29 for his 8 misses on the season.

He also missed 3 extra point attempts that year.

If Ghost kicks anywhere around 75% this season, he is kicking at 50% right now, Pats will be ok. Brad Seeley is one of the best in the business, he has had it easy the last few years because he coached AV, now he needs to step up and earn his paycheck.

I'm not happy with him, but he will get better. He is amazing at kickoffs.

Gostkowski's FG kicking is suspect so far with good reason but we need to be patient.

a comparison with Vinatieri's rookie year may give us pause to be over worried about Gost just yet.

AV was not perfect and he had 0 Touchbacks his rook year....Gost has 6 TBs to date

AV was a rookie in 96 not 99.....

It should be noted he had 1 blocked his rookie season too.

That wasn't just an OVER 40 yarder that was a 48 that he missed.

You don't realistically expect kickers to make those that often.

Wait til he gets a few normal 20 - 39 yard FGs and see how many he makes before you judge him.

I don't hold the kicker responsible for blocking at the line on the other misses.
The one where he slipped; is partly his fault - he has to know the field conditions at home and wear the right shoes; but there were blocking issues there too.

All that said he is great on kickoffs and he doesn't have an issue on PATs; so I would say lay off the criticism unless you want to criticize BB for putting him out there on a 48 yard in a game situation that would have been a lot better kicking a coffin corner.

I agree it's too early. But for those saying Vinatieri's rookie year was bad for perspective:
Adam's rookie year was pretty good, in my opinion. He had 35 tries and missed 8, was pretty much automatic except for outside the 40, for a 77% rate. That's not bad at all.

Also, I personally think booming kickoffs are over-rated. I actually like to have our special teams maintain a physical and violent tendency, and I think they get soft when they're not out there taking someone's head off as often as possible. They can also be momentum and emotion changers.

If Ghost's leg is so powerful, I would like to see him hit every kickoff at a really high angle, give the ball ridiculous hang time, and have a returner catch it at the 1 with Patriots players all over him.

Maverick, if NE gives an average starting field position to their opposition on the 20, that will be in the top 5 every year. They will take touchbacks over returnable balls every day of the week, and twice on Sunday.
