Re: Jamaal Brown reportedly being traded to the Redskins

He skipped out on the Eagles in June of 2008, and supposedly was battling depression. Then, he missed all but 2 games in 2008 with a back injury. Post-surgery, he also missed all of 2009.

Depression.... 2 lost years.... 2 back surgeries. I'm sure he'd come cheap.

Give him an Oxycontin and Xanax ****tail and suit him up.

It's obvious the Saints didn't need him last year, but a 2x Pro Bowl LT and a 6th round pick for a conditional 3rd? He's either still injured or not in the good graces with the Saints staff.

Either way, it kind of sets the bar pretty low for the trade value of disgruntled O-Linemen. This Mankins thing is getting uglier.

I don't know if it sets the bar anywhere. Brown could be damaged goods. The fact that a hip injury and hernia (he required surgery for both last August) put him on injured reserves in September of last year tells me that the injury could be an ongoing problem. He has also had some knee injuries too (although nothing major). Brown might have made the Pro Bowl in 2008, but there could be genuine concerns about his durability over the remainder of his career.

Mankins on the other hand has no major surgeries on his resume. There are no durability concerns with him.

If the Saints were positive that Brown was going to return to his Pro Bowl caliber and play at his Pro Bowl level, they would have either resigned him or held out for a better offer.

Yup, so much for that slam dunk second rounder mg keeps browbeating all comers we'd be walking away from if we just let him come to the conclusion he's better off playing here than sitting out most of another potential contract season...

Teams aren't going to cavalierly cough up big time comp to trading partners or players (let alone both) whose own teams know them and weren't willing to extend themselves financially on the eve of a lockout. This isn't the good old days. Most teams are being deliberately cautious and doing only things they feel they can comfortably afford to in the interim in the event of a lockout or a new CBA with a less expansive cap.

I think some are over-stating how good Brown is. He missed all 2009 and did not have a good 2008. Yes, he made the Pro Bowl then but he didn't deserve it; as often happens players make the Pro Bowl because of being a familiar name, or for a good season earlier in his career.

With that in mind, do you really want to hand a starting tackle position to a player that hasn't had a good season since 2007 and is now a backup? In addition he's a restricted free agent who refused to sign his tender and is looking to get a longterm contract; if the team was willing to do that then it would have made more sense to extend Mankins. You also have to wonder if the Saints know more about Jammal Brown's health and productivity, considering they drafted Charles Brown in the 2nd round to backup starters Jon Stiinchcomb and Jermon Bushrod.
