Why the Costly Jump Up in the Seventh for a Developmental OT?

Geez, who cares, it is 2 7th rounders....

Honestly, they seem to do very well as far as assessing OLmen (best examples being Mankins and Vollmer), so they have a great feeling on somebody, 18 seventh round picks to play with, and they busted a move.

If they are wrong about him, they are wrong about a seventh round pick.

The funny thing is that if they had made the same trade and chosen Deaderick at the top of the 7th, we would all be thrilled with that canny value move! So just mentally swap Welch and Deaderick and sleep soundly. ;)

I care. I had hopes, expectations even, that we'd reunite Blair White with his old QB, our back-up, Brian Hoyer.

I can see the image of White catching passes for the Colts. I hate that. The guy is going to make the team and contribute.

The Iowa kid was a three-year starter on a line that took on all comers. Didn't they win the last two bowl games they were in? Calloway was a big part of that success.

I really liked White for the Pats, too - but based on his performance with the Hoyer connections thrown in as a bonus. OTOH, the Pats HAD to have consulted with Hoyer about White (unless they were certain they didn't want him regardless). And White had an offer from the Colts and took it, presumably without waiting around for a call from the Pats. I've gotta think that if White was rated by the Pats as even half as good as I saw him and the Hoyer-White bond was strong, the "magic" would have happened, maybe even in the 6th. But it didn't.

The Colts are pretty deep with pass-catchers, elite down to solid reserves. Even if White is a bit better than I saw him, he might have a tough time making that group and end up on the P/S. Well, SOMEbody's P/S.

Go to the first round reviews and look at denver's pick of tebow. Pete slams the pick giving it an 'F' I'm just glad to see that the Patriots didn't take him (bet TB would have been upset). I still don't know why they didn't take Clausen?!? He has the potential along with Bradford to be Pro Bowl type QBs.

This will definately be McDaniels' last year in denver.....

This is all the assumption that the Patriots were the ones who wanted to move up- what makes you think that it wasn't the Redskins who wanted to move down and take two guys instead of one?

Dante scarnechia was promised the pick to pick whomever he liked. He didn't want to wait around so he insisted they trade up, so he could be done with it.
I wish they had just waited, could have gotten denver's fifth.

don't know that there's any room for this guy on the PS and he would have gone undrafted even if we had 20 rounds.

On EEI today, Belichick said that he was really surprised both Larsen and Welch were available in the 6th round. Said they had a higher grade on them then some of the players they've historically drafted in the 4th - naming 2007 specifically. That's quite a lot of specifics for BB. So maybe these guys all make the team this year. That would be something - 20+ guys from the past 2 drafts on the 53 man roster.

Remember when the Pats threw in an extra 7 when they got Welker? Sme folks acted like the Pats had traded away Tedy Bruschi.

BB was on the Big Show today and said that they had him (and Larsen) highly rated and were excited about grabbing him.

Well, of course he'd say that.

But part of that is the bias he has toward linemen from the SEC. There's more team speed than in the Big Ten. But name the top two OTs in the league. Jake Long and Cleveland's Joe Thomas. Two Big Ten guys.

One can see this in KC with Pioli. I think that understandable prejudice--and that's the word for it--sometimes causes mistakes. And I think this might be one of them.

State, get a grip. On the other thread you're arguing that quality not quantity counts; here you're upset because we traded quantity for what the Patriots see as quality.

Maybe they could just trade up without losing anything ?

Heavens. I'd take Clady over either of them in a heartbeat.

Matt Light is from where again? None of our starting offensive lineman are from the SEC.

That's an interesting opinion. I wouldn't place Clady in the top 5. Thomas and Long are so much better than everyone it's not even funny.

Matt Light - Purdue
Logan Mankins - Fresno State
Dan Koppen - BC
Steve Neal - Cal. Bakersfield
Sebastian Vollmer - Houston

Mark LeVoir - Notre Dame
Rich Ohrnberger - Penn State
Ryan Wendell - Fresno State
Dan Connolly - Southeast Missouri State
Nick Kaczur - Toledo

Thomas Welch - Vanderbilt
George Bussey - Louisville
Ted Larsen - NC State.

So, thirteen players currently, and only one (drafted at the weekend) is from the SEC.

I was going to jump all over this one but I was beat to it. Well played BritPat...

I care too.

4 picks in the 7th round, and all of them were spent on guys I would have barely considered as UDFAs.

If Bill wanted to give Dante a new toy to play on the edge, he should've given him Selvish Capers for the left side, or Kyle Calloway for the right side. Tom Welch simply didn't carry a draftable grade; he's a mid-priority UDFA at best.

Deadheaderick comes from Alabama with baggage (what a shock; another Pats pick with character issues) and is too damn slow to ever make any plays in the backfield. At least he's bigger & stronger than the smaller & weaker - but not much faster - Darryl Little Richard.

Weston might give Brace a run for his money, but that says more about Brace's incompetence than it does about Weston's accomplishments.

Zac Robinson wishes he were a poor man's Brian Hoyer.

Speaking of Hoyer, why Bill didn't use one of his 3 7th-round comps on Hoyer's teammate Blair White is a complete mystery to me. It is inexcusable & beyond negligent that 2 of those 5 6th- and 7th-rounders weren't used on another WR (specifically White or Scott Long) plus another pass-rusher (specifically Lindsey Witten or Brandon Lang).
