Pats to sign Torry Holt

I'm thinking of Holt as a Deon Branch type guy, who still has the acceleration to create separation, and runs crisp routes. In other word's, he'll be where Brady expects him to be. This is an EXCELLENT short term signing. With 50 catches in a pass deficient offense, he has shown that he STILL has skills to play the game. With Edelman/Welker and Moss taking up most of the looks, 40-50 catches by Holt is just what this team needs right now.

That's on the upside, the only downside is if Tate or one of the rookies out play him, and if that happens, it isn't a bad thing. Its a no risk situation.

It also makes it more likely that we pick a TE in the first 4 picks.

BTW - AGE isn't a factor here this is most likely a one year deal

Four or five years ago, people would call Branch a poor man's Torry Holt.

Signed him a year too late. This is who I wanted last season over Galloway. Other than that, it's better than nothing. However, I still see them drafting a WR in the second round.

BB, stick to coaching please, Torry Holt was all done 2 years ago

Really?

So you wouldn't take 51 rec., 722 yards, 14.2 YPC? On a running team with a pedestrian QB?

Thanks for that incisive analysis.

I am thinking this is a domino situation. Seattle does not get Marshall, so they must keep Branch, so BB goes to plan B and signs Holt.

I like the Holt signing. He is a perfect veteran X to line up on the outside opposite Moss at the Z. If he stays healthy, he should be able to contribute and help clear the underneath for Edelman.

Excellent signing on paper.

Not sure Holt demands the special attention that he used to (requiring a FS or other DB to double-team him along w/ the CB) but on the other hand, he is capable of doing well vs single coverage.

50 catches for 700 yrds would be fine in this offense. I wish I was confident that he will do better than Galloway.

What the heck. No guarantee that he makes it out of camp anyway.

And the numbers should increase with Brady at QB.

I think you should have a fair amount of confidence. Of course, like any signing, he could bust. However, here are a few items in his favor:

a.) He's five years younger than Galloway
b.) He's not coming off injury, and has been more durable than Galloway
c.) He's a better system fit

I wasn't too overly exicted when I heard this at first, but the fact he had 50+ catches for over 700+ yards with a run first team and subpar Qb makes me think he could put up some decent numbers with the Patriots. He is better than Patten and Aiken, hopefully he isn't the last WR we add though.

If by subpar you mean probowler, then yes

There were alot better options out there about 2 months ago, it looks like this is what we have to settle for, funny how you left out the 0 TD's stat from last year.

KoolAid Bauer, you would think BB signing Keyshawn out of the booth would be a great sigining, so why should I care about you and all your homerism KoolAid thoughts ? You take homerism to the next level.

I like the signing if for no other reason it gives the Pats more flexibility in the draft. No longer is there an absolute need to draft a WR early and expect him to produce right away. When teams find themselves in that position they are more likely going to become desperate and reach for a player due to need - which increases the chances of that player being a bust, or at least a poor value. Too bad the Pats couldn't have done something similar at one or two other positions before the draft.

Don't feed the trolls. The Pats could trade a seventh round pick for Larry Fitzgerald and he would complain the Pats have to pay his salary.

Raiders' #1 baby.

Agreed. If they go WR in the 2nd round this year and WR 1st round next year, they will be set for the next 5-10 years. Green, Baldwin, Jones, Floyd next year = WOW. Say you take Benn this year and Green next year, you let Moss walk.

Your WR corps for 2011 looks like this: Green, Benn, Welker, Tate, Edelman. That would be dominant especially with the way we operate out of the shotgun.

It's better than nothing.

722 yards in 15 games in a passing game with no elite type weapons. Better than Aiken and current day Patten.

What a joke, this is what I have been waiting for the past 4 months?

Should be an interesting season, Brady must be in his glory with all of these weapons, could the team please pick up someone who understands that we have the best QB in the game. GIVE HIM SOME GD WEAPONS.

Agree 100% with your points- especially the system fit where Warner and hsi receivers were very dependent on sight adjustments at the LoS. Can he make the sharp cuts back to the ball (which were a big problem w/ Galloway)? Don't know.

I guess it's the fear of the unknown w/ a 33 yr old who can't make a lousey JAX squad that bothers me a little.....

putting up 700 yards in the NFL is not done. Especially when he'd upgrade the WR position on this team.

This is an upgrade over Aiken and Patten, so I don't see what's not to like.

On the surface, that means absolutely nothing since you're not taking into account money, how well they fit the system, character, etc.

You're right. He had 0 TD's. With Garrard throwing him the ball on a team that primary featured heavy doses of MJD and Sims-Walker.

Apparently your position seems to be that unless it's Marshall or Boldin, this can't possibly be a good signing.

KoolAid Bauer, you would think BB signing Keyshawn out of the booth would be a great sigining, so why should I care about you and all your homerism KoolAid thoughts ? You take homerism to the next level.

Pure, unadulterated garbage. I freely admit to having my weight shifted a bit to the homer side of the scale, but I'd like to think I can still maintain a rational approach to the team when analyzing their moves.

It's ironic that you would accuse me of homerism, given that your posts are indistinguishable from those made by ramon, klinefan, and the various other trolls we've had here over the years.
