Re: Steelers ship Santonio to the Jets
The Steelers have been one of the model organizations for a long time. The Jets haven't won squat since Namath. If the Steelers are saying it's worth getting this guy outta here for next to nothing, it's probably going to end up not being a good move for the Jets.
Sirius NFL Network this morning is saying he's being suspended 4 games for substance abuse, not the other legal issue. If he's failed a drug test now for at least the second time, he's a problem.
B. Edwards was a problem in Cleveland, a bit of a head case, and now is a Jet. Chromartie was a problem in SD, a bit of a head case, and now is a Jet. Holmes was a problem in Pittsburgh, a bit of a head case, and now is a Jet.
The trade seems good on paper, but these moves don't usually pay off. That disfuctional locker room thing is a recipe for disaster, and can bring the most talented teams down.
I say the Jets had a good thing going, and now have actively traded for three other teams problems. One was bad enough. Two would have been worse. But, THREE? This could backfire BIG TIME!
Cromartie wasn't a headcase or a problem on the team in SD, he had off-the-field issues because he doesn't know how to wrap up his baby-maker, but wasn't a problem in the locker room.
You can say the same either about Holmes or Edwards, both were well respected in the locker rooms.
Sure, they have blemishes, and I think in Holmes case it was a missed test, not a failed test, either way, it is why the Jets were able to get the player.
The Holmes situation is unique because Rooney and the Steeler organization prides themselves on having a squeaky clean image, the Jets were the benefactor of a team trying to clean up a massive PR nightmare in the wake of the Rothlesberger and Holmes cases, thing is, they presented themselves with a doublestandard.
And Pats fans shouldn't be spinning the whole "locker room cancer" issue, Belichick himself took chances and was able to benefit in similar situations when they traded for Moss and Dillon, and others.
Sure, the move the Jets have made are risks, but they are low risks given the compensation spent, and the rewards is potentially off the charts.
Keep in mind that the Jets hold the leverage with some of these players and their contract situations.
As for the locker room spin, you clearly don't know how tight the current Jets locker room is, that is why Tannenbaum is making these moves, they have some high quality guys leading that locker room, the chemistry angle doesn't make sense either, the Jets aren't bringing in guys with egos, they are bringing in highly talented players who in most cases are looking for a change in scenery, these aren't guys that are going to disrupt the leaders already present in the Jets locker room, they are guys who are going to look around at guys like Jenkins, Revis, Harris, Cotchery, Scott, Faneca, Mangold, Tomlinson, and the list goes on that are the leaders on this team and already have a work ethic in place.
In players like Tomlinson and potentially Taylor, you're talking about high quality NFL players, both potential HOF players who can still play, in LT, a guy that is younger than Jones, who are both very hungry to win a championship.
You can't deny that players love playing for Ryan, he had this in Baltimore, and it is already evident with the Jets, this guy knows how to lead a team, and how to get the most of out of his guys. It is why LT is now on the team, and why Taylor, who once laughed at even the notion of being on the team is seriously considering just that.
