Dont get me wrong, I aknowledge he is our best OL but this is his last year as a Patriot. No way to we franchise him next year, I cant see spending precious cap room on a Guard....sorry, I really cant. We are going to need skill positions in '11(Plural-like 3). Light, a team favorite, is capable of playing LG alot better than he can play RT(if you didnt see him on the right side go to the tape-its painful). Vollmer takes LT, Light takes a pay cut, and we max out value on Mankins by trading him on or before the draft. We drafted a G in the 4th that should be a suitable backup this year, and we can draft another in a very deep draft. Just like the Iggles did with McNabb, if you arent going to keep him long term deal him now when he has value....it doesnt hurt that the Lions have talked about needing a guard.....I smell something, smells like Suhy!

Yes! Brilliant! Let's add another gaping hole for the draft!

I'm sure Tom would be thrilled.

Yeah, lets give away our pro bowl LG and HOPE that a draft pick in the middle rounds of the draft in his position pans outin years ahead.

Please put down the beer in each hand

Better yet, leave Vollmer on the bench because....never mind. Light to G isnt a hole, and adding a pick or 2 we can easily replace a Guard. It makes a hole to get Vollmer on the field. We essentially traded Hobbs for Ornberger in the 4th round last year, why draft a guy if you dont think he can eventually play? Who would you rather pay next year Mankins or a Randy Moss #1WR? Brady? RB? We are going to need cap room, no way do we max out at Guard....

only fault i find here is the premise that light will take a pay cut...he wont, another team would gladly have him as an LT.....so well be paying that much to a gaurd either way

although i like the jist of what ur saying....ur specifics are too muddled, and i am one of those who remembers the SB game in 07 very fondly....and had rather have a line that will NOT disappear in such a game, hence keep rookies away

put the crackpipe down....and step away from the keyboard

Put down the pipe...........don't trade him you pay him. Mankins is a probowl OG so why would you trade him to have another hole on your team? He's proven so you don't trade proven for unproven.

How much $$$ were you thinking of paying Suhy.

Agree with most : crazy move to do that. I think we're better off with a guy who never misses games and plays at a high level, regardless of the prospects of signing him...

Never place franchise tag ? I think he'd be a candidate...

Jeff - you are making a few assumptions.

1) You assume that Light will take a pay cut
2) You assume that Light will be as good as Neal or Mankins on the interior.
3) You assume that Ohrnberger is being groomed for guard.

Ohrnberger is probably being groomed for CENTER since he's nearly identical to Koppen.

You have no idea as to whether or not Light will be successful on the inside or not.

The Pats could, indeed, keep Mankins beyond next year. There is plenty of time for them to come to an agreement. This idea that they should just right off Mankins because of the potential money is ridiculous.

While I'm not as high on Mankins as some, he is definitely a keeper and a player we want to build around..

dumbest rant post contender of all time............... Mankins deserves to be paid and extended. he's everything you want in an NFL guard. Sheeesh:eek:

It's not even a matter of being high on Mankins. With Neal's recent injury history, moving Mankins this year could result in negligent homicide charges being filed against BB & Co. after Brady gets killed in a game.

Mankins will be dealt with next year. Unless he's willing to re-up for reasonable money (which doesn't seem likely).

I guess back in the 80s we should have traded John Hannah away for some juicy draft picks and a player from the other team,He was only a guard after all,the position is unimportant compared to other areas

I don't think its a crazy suggestion if you can get at least a top 20 pick for him. Guards are fairly easy to find. We've won with guys like Andruzzi and Neal and Compton. Connolly was decent last year, they have some hope for Ohrnberger and Wendell. I have no objection to trying Light there either, but I'm not convinced he'd win the job. But if he did, you just let him play out the deal. You can sign a vet, there are decent ones who are or will be available, and as you noted the draft is deep and you could groom a guy you draft this year.

While I acknowledge Mankins is a good player, I simply do not place the value on the position he'll want. One downside of Mankins too...he is very and frustratingly penalty prone. He led the Patriots in penalties this year and its been that way for a few seasons. When not called for a penalty, yes, he is a good guard.

I don't see the original poster's proposal as outrageous. Like I said, I simply don't value the position that highly. He's good. Yep. We may or may not (decent possibility not) have his services beyond 2010.

Bottom line? I wouldn't be crying in my beer if I heard tomorrow they had traded him to the NFC for a top 20 pick.

But come on... no one'll give NE a top 20 pick for Mankins. This is going nowhere.
