How will re-signing Brady impact Pats' ability to afford talent at other positions?

Re: How will resigning Brady impact PATS ability to afford talent at other positions?

How many more play makers did he need on offense? He had Moss, one of the top 3 greatest receivers ever to play. Welker, A 100+reception machine. This team lacked play calling in a big way and it showed last season. It sounds like you want to create an All Madden team and call it the Patriots.

No the point was they threw away a year 2006 when the guy was the best qb in the league and he proved it by almost getting to the Superbowl with sub standard Wr's and why because they "The Pats" always have to win at the bargaining table they let their ego get in the way of negotiating a fair deal with Branch and Givens. Don't you get it they won superbowls with those guys and haven't won since. Because they let these guys go they had to trade picks to get Welker and Moss wasted a 2nd rounder on Chad Jackson instead of drafting another young defensive player and imagine if they had kept Branch and Givens and added Welker. You see thats my issue with this team too many times the bottom line with this team is the almighty dollar. I used to go to their games when you could walk up to the ticket window at 12:00 the day of game and get great seats. I used to wonder what it would be like to have the best qb like "Montana" in the league on my team. I have that and I want more because those guys don't grow on trees and I think the Pats have not taken advantage of what they were given by the football gods. If you know anything about football the QB is the key and he has to have weapons.

Lack of playcalling? Or one-dimensionality on offense? I'm no big fan of Bill O'Brien after his first year, but he wasn't working with a loaded offense. Having 2 elite wide receivers and nothing else beyond it just doesn't cut it - frontloaded talent doesn't win in this league, balance and depth does. Just look at Indy and NO. Wayne, Collie, Garcon, Clark, Addai, Brown - Colston, Meachem, Henderson, Bush, Bell, P. Thomas, D. Thomas, Shockey, Moore.

With the Pats - it was Moss, Welker, Faulk - and that's it. I'd much rather have the 2003/2004 receiving units that, while lacking a #1, went 5 deep, and had a more reliable running game (in 04 at least).

Brady shouldn't settle for anything less than perhaps a token amount under what he's worth on the open market ("token" = if he's worth $120 million, he takes $115 million). Both he and his wife are entertainers with short shelf lives and they should both maximize their earnings power as long as they have it.

IMHO, without TB, there are no Lombardi's in Foxboro and there is no dynasty; he has earned every dime the Pats have already paid him and owes the Krafts nothing but his 100% effort for the money they pay him. He should receive whatever that he's worth.

Don't get me wrong, I hope he stays with the Pats until he retires, but I won't hold it against him if he can't come to terms with the Krafts.

I'd be shocked if he doesn't reach an agreement. It's a fair point that he and his wife have careers with short shelf-lives (though modeling can probably go on longer than one would think) - but both are legitimate celebrities who will certainly have their fair share of opportunities to make money in other ways.

But again, that may be aside the point - Brady seems like a level headed guy. If he wanted to make more money, we'd know it by now. He's been underpaid literally since the day he took over for Bledsoe, and he hasn't complained thus far. I can see him taking 75% of what he could get on the open market, and I don't think thats a sign of weakness. Rather, it makes him a better man for realizing he has something good here and willing to prioritize that over money, which too few athletes are able to do.

what he said

I'm sure Brady thinks about the money but i think his legacy is more important him the championships is what he craves. Like i've said before this is going to be a tough negotiation this time around they screwed him the last time with the Givens and Branch debacle.

Time will tell, but I doubt that he'd take a 25% haircut. I disagree that maximizing his economic potential is some sort of moral weakness, as is implied when you state that taking less money "makes him a better man."

I think these guys (from Tom Brady on down to a lineman working for Veterans' Minimum) have every right to get what they can get when they can get it, given that their careers can end on any play, even in training camp, and given that the average NFL career spans 3.5 seasons.

I don't think Brady's going to insist on being the highest paid QB, but I think that the differential between what he's worth and what he takes will be a lot closer to 5% than 25%.

brady, will get something like 12 to 15 million a year. the pats will still have about 10 million of cap space if and when they bring one back. or let moss and he's 9 million a year walk and you have lot's of room to sign all the JAG's and rookies the pats want lol

Re: How will resigning Brady impact PATS ability to afford talent at other positions?

Many of the struggles to find WRs are self-inflicted... the team has been getting by with the absolute bare minimum on WRs; dipping into street free agent Gaffney and Coldwell for #2 and #3 WR to pair up with an aging Troy Brown is just reckless.

I hope Brady drive a hard bargin this time. I rather Brady get every $ he deserves and give to his charity than let BB waste it on guys like Woods, Crable, and Aiken.

Are you suggesting that Brady will not be re-signed until after this season?

Or perhaps Kraft realizes there is a good chance that there will be a lockout in 2011, which means there is no need for a new contract until after he knows what the new cap is based on that new CBA.

Why do I have the suspicion that this thread has arrived at its rating through one 5 and three 1s?
