Pats sign David Patten

Thats ridiculous....He has a good knowledge of the system and will be able to lead guys who don't in film rooms and workouts. Sure he has things to pick up too as things have changed. But the guy knows the Patriot way is a hard worker to say he wouldn't be a leader if he makes this team or even just in the offseason is ridiculous.

How did Rodney become team captain his first year here then? There is no rules as to how locker room leaders are assigned. And I would think that any reciever on this team would listen to what Patten has to say due to his success, time spent, and knowledge in the system.

Rodney was already all but destined for the HOF before he got here and showed leadership from SD ..you simply can't compare the two.

Patten would not be a problem in the locker room, actually is a positive figure but don't see him as a leader, thats my opinion

He is more than likely TC fodder unless the WR situation gets worse than it is now....if that's possible.

If he can catch a football in practice I don't see how he could be any worse than Aiken, Stanback or those other guys who are so bad I can't remember their names

Even if he runs a 5.5 forty he couldn't be worse than them

That joke went right over your head. It was a reference to the most famous thread in PatsFans history from summer 2004.

Oh so only hall of famers are leaders now? I am not saying he is going to be voted a team captain. Hell I even doubt he makes the team but while he is here and working he will vertainly be a good influence on the players around him showing them how the Patriot Way works, passing on his knowledge of the system and how the team works. To me that is leadership but apparently you just want to call it a positive figure.

Fine you don't like the Harrison example because he was a established hall of famer what about Izzo I believe he was STs captain his first year here.

I don't think you can take a player many years removed from this team and all of a sudden be a locker room presence or a leader on a team he was not a part of last season.

I think leadership and locker room leaders must be on the roster the past few years like Mayo,Brady,Light,Welker ect: guys who have been here the past couple of years,Patten would be a guy who would not make a commotion and be a positive guy but as a leader?,dunno.

I mean really think about your logic here.

I am a player X (rookie WR or Tate or Edelman) Am I really going to ignore what Patten has to say on the premise that he wasn't here last year when the guy has had more success in a Patriot uni than I can dream of? No way I am going to try to milk him for anything that can possibly help me be a better player.

Bingo's probably on his way to a gym as we speak...

Clearly they want at the very least patriots way leadership for that unit through the off season. Welker probably won't be around for OTA's and mini camps other than as an observer. Edleman needs continued mentoring as will Tate and whomever else they bring in via FA or the draft. If they want these guys to develop the right mindset and not rely on their talent to take them to some other level, they best be getting taught to work hard and then work harder. Patten came into the league as an UDFA truck loader... And he and another guy who was drafted in a round that doesn't even exist anymore were Brady's top two receiving targets in 2001 on a team with a jag RB and a sub JAG TE shaped like a blwling ball (who none the less could step up in a pinch...). I remember one time Brady hit Patten in the back along the sidelines and Wiggie was trailing him and caught that ricochet and tapped his toes like he did it all the time...

There's an 80 man roster in the offseason, maybe Bill should just go through the speed dial and grab as many ring bearers as he can and keep 'em on as asst. position coaches if they can't make the roster...

Anyone know the status of the other David (Givens)? Will he ever play again?

Look, Patten was here for 4 years, we won the SB 3 of those years, he left and we haven't won since. Plus he's the only player that can make the conscious play while unconscious.

Seriously though, it's 2/24 and this is just the first of the WRs to be brought in this offseason. Pretty much 0 risk and potentially some reward.

Rodney was not all but destined for the HOF before he got here. And no one expected him to play out his contract, let alone make a case for being in the HOF conversation based on what he did here...

Leaders aren't usually superstars, they're guys who had to work it to get anywhere.

Well you and I don't vote for Captains on the team, the players of the team do..If Patten makes the team and they feel he is worthy of being a captain..great

I Just would not expect that nor a sudden leader

When you think about it,I really don't feel Moss is a true captain either after his premature statement about him being gone next season with little faith in the F.O.

The nostalgic fan in me is absolutely thrilled.

Hope he's able to make any contribution to help the 2010 squad.

My belief is that he is done. Shame.

If healthy, would be back on this team in a heartbeat.

Patten at 25 is younger than Galloway. His is instantly an improvement over Aiken, Stanback and Slater. He can take Welker's roster spot until Welker is ready to come back. I don't see any downside.

Of course we will need more help than this. But let's start now with Moss, Edleman and Patten.

Favorite David Patten Games

My three favorite David Patten Games:
1. Indianapolis- Only Patriot to Throw for ,Run for and catch a Touchdown.
2. Buffalo- Being knocked out and Holding the ball says it all.
3. Oakland- Snow Bowl,He had so many 3rd down catches.

Absolutely right - always room for high character guys to teach the young ins. David Patten has done nothing but surprise and surpass all expectations his entire career.

While it does seem to me he is beign brought in to teach and probably be a coach before training camp ends.....it would not surprise me one bit to see him not only make the team but contribute as well.

It amazes me how many posters know so much more than the Patriot ownership, head coach, coaching staff and scouts.

i remember his great td catch from Drew Bledsoe against PIT

Do you think if we sign Bolden, will he challenge Patten for the #2 on the depth chart if Welker is not back? :)

How effective is he really going to be beyond a locker room presence?

I don't see him making the final squad and even if he does it'll be as a #4 receiver...

He may be 35, but he could still be of use.

1. If he has sure hands and can still run routes, he would be a good #4 option/depth. (I'd take him over Aiken or Stanback).

2. Him, Brady, and Faulk on the field is great leadership.

Even if nothing else happens, this looks decent.

1.Moss
2.Welker
3.Edelman
4. Patten
5. Tate
