Will the Patriots trade Matt Light?

It's all well and good saying 'Lets move Kaczur to guard' but can he actually play there? Hasn't he been a tackle since his college days?

Ive seen many posts here saying that 'experts' before the draft felt he would be a better guard than tackle. I've never seen a link with those posts, so take it however you want to :D

I'd trade Light, in the hope of getting a late second (might be out of the question although never say never, KC has the #50/51 pick in the second round) or early third (probably more realistic - KC has the #68 pick).

We could try Kaczur at RG, especially if Neal is gone, but what about Dan Connolly? He did well enough there last year to suggest he could be the answer. Just a shame we traded Hochstein.

"While I feel he is too light to play tackle at the next level, his hand usage and pass protection skills will make him an ideal guard." Dave Te' Thomas, NFLDraftScout.com

Thanks Box. I figured one of you draftniks would know where to find the quote. ;)

was that the feeling most 'experts' had about him before the draft, or was it just that site?

I remember NFL Draft Scout because I use their historical material to compare current NFL players to today's draft prospects. I don't think Kaczur was on a lot of pundit's radars back then, I do remember one blurb in the media after that draft where at least one team was miffed NE got him at 100.

I would think BB keeps Light around at least until the offers to RFAs is over with just before the draft. Imagine if Mankins is signed to an offer sheet (p pill ) and Light was traded. I do not think BB takes the risk. I think he keeps Light .

lets face it there is no way in hell anyone is giving up a first or second rounder for light. i would like to try to see us deal him to the redskins. their o line is pathetic and need some solid veteran experience. i say offer light and a late round pick to the skins for chris cooley. the skins have a younger fred davis now who made a name for himself this season. cooley cant really block but his hands are fantastic. his number for this upcoming season is under 2.4 million. this would give brady the tight end security blanket he deserves plus free up more money to sign our many draft picks. just because this will most likely be an uncapped season doesnt mean kraft wont stick to a budget. just a thought. go pats!

I agree Light; I didn't see his skill diminishing.

There is a lot of teams that just do not have a startable LT, the Chiefs and Seahawks come to mind. Somebody should take the gamble that Light will be productive over a four year period, than a rookie playing over a four year contract.

OK Cousin. Here is an idea that works for us and the Seahawks in part one. The Seahawks are desperate for a LT. They also have two #1s to build their team for Pete Carroll and if they can save an O Line pick to do a trade because they have so many needs instead, great.

Light for Lofa Tatupu. Tatupu tore a chest muscle and is now well, but in his absence, David Hawthorne from TCU played very well at MLB.

Tatupu is 242/lbs and only 27 (think a younger Teddy). How about Mayo and Tatupu in the middle for many years to come? With Guyton's speed and better coverage ability, he might could be the OLB we are looking for. 4.47 Speed and 12 sacks in his two years at Georgia Tech as a starter.

Speaking of the Seahawks, perhaps a three way trade can be involved as in part two. Leinhart was Pete Carroll's QB in his last National Championship run. AZ is not enthralled with him. The Seahawks are searching for Matt Hasselbecks' younger replacement. Matt is 34 but AZ had a great run with veteran Warner. I see Hasselbeck playing a few more years and with some great tools in Breaston and Larry Fitzgerald, Matt could be better suited to run the Cardinals offense who are still a top tier team in the NFL pending FA losses, versus a rebuilding project in Seattle. But being in the same conference it is tough to trade.

OLB for the Cardinals is an issue with Okeafor (UFA), Berry (UFA) and Haggan both older than even AD who all things being equal, is still a physical presence.

How about Thomas (AD) and Matt Light for Hasselbeck and Tatupu and a player to be named later? We then trade Hasselbeck and a second rounder for Bolden and Leinhart, then as part of the Seattle deal or one or that infamous "player to be named later", send Leinhart to Seattle to bring him back with Carroll.

Summary:
Seattle gives up Tatupu, Hasselbeck and end up with Leinhart and Light.

AZ gives up Leinhart and Bolden and get Hasselbeck, AD and a second rounder.

Patriots give up Light, AD and a second rounder and get Tatupu and Bolden(we get a solid WR to compliment Moss and Welker that we desperately need and that ILB to pair with Mayo for years to come. Addition by subtraction with AD).

OK SHOOT!!!!

yeah dump a veteran leader and a good mate of brady on a team who's apparent weakness or at least perceived weakness is lack of veteran leadership. I never got all these calls to dump light he is at worst a good RT

Things the Patriots have an abundance of: Draft picks

Things the Patriots don't have an abundance of: Quality offensive line depth and veteran leadership.

Trading Light is not a good idea.

Is it me or did Vollmer seem to do better on the left side. I know Light prefers the left side. Maybe it's time to sell high with Light. I would trade him for a high 3rd or low 2nd.

Yeah, so Billy can draft a guy like Chad Jackson!!

No Thank You.

Well we already have our LT of the future on the roster and a RT. So you can live in your little fear bubble and we can all get old together. Or we can get something for Light while he still has value..

1.) Light was the team's best tackle last season. He'll likely be able to play at a high level again this season.

2.) Kaczur, even when healthy, isn't a great RT. Moving Light means keeping Kaczur at RT, because of the need to put Vollmer at LT. In other words, if Vollmer is as good as some seem to think he is/will be, moving Light will make the RT spot weaker, and it will do so without a corresponding level of improvement at LT.

3.) It's possible that Neal will not be back this season. Even if he does return, he can't be counted on for a full 16 game season plus the playoffs. Unfortunately, the backups at OG have not acquitted themselves well in the past couple of seasons. That means that the team might need, or wish. to try Kaczur at the OG position, especially given that they gave Kaczur a shiny new contract extension not long ago.

Understanding this, and deciding that keeping Light is the right move under those circumstances, is not "living in a fear bubbl"e. It's using logic to come to a legitimate opinion. The opinion may turn out to be correct or incorrect, but it's still one that can reasonably be argued.

Fear bubble? = FAIL

Get real our current RT is a flocking turnstyle without Neal saving his aZZ, and Vollmer probably won't play LT until Light is gone.

Your right let's hope Kaczur makes a better gaurd....

i don't think dumping Light/Kaczur makes too much sense with the apparent hole at RG. Kaczur can hopefully get pushed inside, letting Vollmer take over at RT. draft someone to train for a year, and then bounce either Kaczur/Light, with the rook in theory being ready to step up next year. Seems to me that would be the best short and long term oiption.

Vollmer struggled alot once he came back from his concussion. Teams targeted him a bunch.

IN the texans game vollmer was moved around from LT and RT but the texans moved there line around to create matchup issues. After the concussion his play dropped and also with game tapes they could exploit his weakness.

a reason he played more rt in the end . Let say we trade matt and vollmer never comes back strong or gets another concussion then you are fine with LeVoir as LT?

I remember him having more trouble on the right side. But, I don't remember him getting reps on the left side once Light came back.

Yeap he was struggling and so they put light on one side and gave help on the rt side.Kazcur got injured and he was playing hurt. so it was easier to just have help assignment on 1 side.

Last year the most inside presure came when neal was not in there. the right side of the line was having issues against 3-4 teams as the 3-4Ends were getting to the RG alot. Vollmer will actually be better as a match up against 3-4 ends as a gaurd.
