2010 wide receivers to start the year

OK, I;m fine with the team considering WR as one of the needs that might be addressed with one of the first four picks, depending on value. I do expect us to sign a free agent linebacker. Last year we signed Banta-Cain and waited for Jason Taylor. It is time to sign another LB.

So, I do agree with you. My top two needs are OG and DL.

I see 3 other clear needs right now: interior OL, DE, LB. Even assuming we don't address any of these in FA and that Pryor, Crable, McKenzie aren't the answer at said positions, there's still 3 day one picks to address each if you use 1 on a WR. But I'm sure there will be plenty activity through FA.

First off Aiken is horrible

AS an aside I cant believe we never gave Matt Jones a look. He would have been a great red zone target. Maybe he was a lost cause (snort snort)

Just what is Tates injury do we really know?

Ok so here is the Brockton Bombers easy guide to fixing the O

1)Brandon Marshall? I think there is a chance

2) I say bring in Mike Martz/Jim Zorn(Yes the Deadskins sucked on offense but as me sainted Irish mum used to say "You cant make chicken salad out of chicken @#$%) as oc because Blanky Mcnobody obviously sucks.

3)Upgrade the TE's We need one who is a great blocker Ala Kyle Brady and one who has great hands Ala Ben Coates

4)Kick Maroney to the curb and get A big bruiser back in the draft and also a hands man Faulk/Westbrook type

5)Get Light and Kaczur jobs at the Airport no they probably wont do a good job protecting anyone but I bet you the lines would move faster as they make excellent turnstiles

And thats all I got to say about that

Oh please coach belichick, brady needs weapons. I would rather take brady's WR corps from 03-04 and 04-05 rather than have two good receivers and no one else. What happened to Donte Stall and Gaffney? Brady had 4 reliable wide receivers, a reliable TE, and a good pass-catching RB in Faulk. We need weapons!!!!! A deep threat in Brandon Marshall would be nice and maybe Bryant. Moss got too much coverage vs the ravens yesterday and better LBs and a better secondary!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lee Evans=perfect second option. Can go deep, make a play, intermediate routes, a physical guy.

Mike Leach hasnt done anything in the NFL. The Big 12 is a lot different than the NFL. There is no way BB brings in someone to run the offense that hasnt proven himself in the NFL.

What about Bill O'Brien?

Here what do we have to do with the receiver position.

We need to go look at the 2nd tier receivers such as Kevin Walter, Lee Evans, and Antonio Bryant etc... Guys such as Brandon Marshall, Miles Austin, and Vincent Jackson would cost too much to the point where we would be limited of what we could do on defense. That's where the focus needs to be.

Sign Lee Evans or Antonio Bryant would go a long way in improving us in the receiving core. You're 2nd target would have two legit guys with Moss on the other side, and hopefully Welker at some point next season.

Thoughts?

We need help at WR. Aiken and Slater are not the answer. Edelman will contribute in the slot during Welker's absence.

That solid veteran we're looking for is now Moss.

Who will take Moss' place? Who's our Fitzgerald or Austin or even Desean Jackson for the future?

I said draft as the longterm solution. For this year I said we need to sign 1 guy, 2 if Welker is not ready for the start of the season. I don't think we need to run out and sign a Vincent Jackson or Miles Austin, the superstar route isn't the answer for this team. Get a set of targets that can grow in the system like Branch/Givens. In 2011 I'd love to see Welker, Tate, Edelman and a draftee or 2 from this year as regular contributers. If there's a good value out in FA that works as well. But I'd rather the team focus its priorities on DE,LB,interior OL before we throw many at a WR.

You said a draftee or 2 in this post, so what are you saying that we should draft 2 WR's or get 2 WR's from FA?

I agree with what you are saying about Evans, he probably would be a good fit here, but he isnt a FA. We would have to trade for him and probably draft picks. I think the Bills would be open to that, but I dont know about the Pats.

I think like you said Antonio Bryant would be a good fit here. I have him and Malcolm Floyd on my list of FA's I'd like to see the Pats go after

O'Brien joined the staff in 2007 and then became the WR's coach in 2008. Even this year his official title was QB coach not OC. BB doesnt bring in guys from the college ranks and immediately throw them in as his OC, they have to have atleast some experience under his system

About this idea that it takes two years to develop WRs, I think it takes one camp, a preseason, and a handful of games. Johnny Knox, Mike Wallace, Austin Collie, and a few others jumped right in this year. I think we'd be OK by the midway mark, and what's more, we'd be getting a jump on 2011 when we really need a bunch of young WRs.

The safe bet is to sign a quality FA that you already know what they can do. Drafting a WR hoping that he makes an immediate impact is a big risk that sometimes doesnt work out the way teams had planned, but like you pointed out there are exceptions. It is just up to the team involved if they want to take that risk

For every WR that has inpact early in their rookie year, there are two who haven't.

For every rookie wide receiver that has an impact in their first season, there are ten who have not!

Antonio Bryant just might the answer as an unrestricted free agent. However, he does come from the same system as Joey Galloway.

But not last year. Last year teams hit on a lot more guys, and this year's draft is loaded with quality WRs.

Just saying. Our record with WRs in FA is abysmal. There's a reason those guys are available, and if they are old, they are too set in their ways. We brought in about 10 FAs over the years, and only David Patten has worked out.

Antonio Bryant or Malcolm Floyd are my choices.

Why can't we do both?

We should draft at least one WR;
sign 1 or 2 more UDFAs;
and sign 1 or 2 vet FAs.

That oughta cover it.

Heres a list of free agent WRs:
Brandon Marshall
Vincent Jackson
Miles Austin
Braylon Edwards
Terrell Owens
Antonio Bryant
Derrick Mason
Steve Breaston
Malcom Floyd
Kevin Walter

Most of these guys I cannot see their current teams letting them go. I dont think Marshall would be a good fit here.

Some possibilities IMO are, Bryant, Floyd and Breaston (if Cards let him go).

Thanks for posting. Breaston was making plays all night against GB and as I was watching I wondered when he would be a FA. Would love to have V-Jax.

Stalworth stalled halfway through the year, then I think he killed a guy.
