Re: Schobel considering retirement

I thought Schobel was younger (29, 30 range). Wow! Never thought he would retire this soon.

Re: Schobel considering retirement

Brady is having a boner right now reading this...guaranteed (and that is without Gisele in the room)

do it, do it, do it, do it, do it :D

Is this the last year of his contract with the Bills? Given the trend how BB likes to sign players who play well against the Pats, why not? Plus, he would bring some pass rush.

Part of it is a recurring foot injury, but I think a big factor has got to be that he's only had one winning season in Buffalo.

Sportin wood is only action TB is getting with Gis in full-blown momma-mode for a while.

Super player. Shame he couldn't end up on a better team. He'd be a DPOY candidate.

He is 32 years old...nine seasons under his belt as well.

If he retires, he retires. We arnt going to go get a retired player to play OLB for us.

Can't say this saddens me in the least. I'm sure Light will be the first to pop the champagne. Don't let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya, Aaron.

He signed a 7 year extension in 2007 for $50M. If he retires this season his rights remain with the Bills should he un-retire.

Whoa! He must be leaving some serious money on the table even with a signing bonus lump sum. Health reasons? Then again, not every player is Branch or Asante.

Imagine how frustrating it is for a player with all pro talent to not just not win but to suffer through years of utter mismanagement and starting over every couple of seasons. Brady has addressed how each season is such a battle and that is why he always got so emotional at the ring ceremonies. Unless you're playing for one, or the next one, it must be increasingly difficult to motivate yourself to submit to the grind, mentally as well as physically, year in and year out - no matter how much you love the game or even the paychecks that go with it.

If the Bills were smart they would approach him now about facilitating a trade in the off season. They aren't going to contend any time soon even in their own division.

How long does he have to stay retired for this right to expire? I have seen some cases where it's one year.

I believe it is for the remaining term of his contract. Generally speaking players who have retired and unretired of late have been UFA at the time they retired. Occasionally a team will cut a player who appears to want to unretire. The JETS cut Favre because they couldn't afford his cap hit in a year when they planned to move on. GB chose not to because they could fit him under the cap and they were determined to see him not land in Minnesota. I think the confusion arises when talking about unretiring from an official retirement (lots of players retire without officially filing the paperwork). I believe once they file the paper work there may be a waiting period to undo it in order for them to play anywhere. But that's more a benefits issue (double dipping) than a rights issue.

Re: Schobel considering retirement

I don't understand why. Seems like he just wants to get out of Buffalo. He can clearly still play.
