So how bout that passing defense this year?

I think we need this thread after the Colts game

The secondary has looked very good indeed. However, we will indeed know much more about ourselves after playing our first games with Indy and NO.

I think we need this thread after the Colts game

Why? Win or lose, we'll have gems such as these...

"Where is the pass rush?!/Where is A.D.?!"
"Fire Dean Pees now"
"Fire Bill O'Brien now"
"BB has lost it"

This is why losses, IMO, make the forum so much more interesting to be in. It's almost fun pissing away some free time by blasting idiots such as the ones that would post threads like the ones mentioned above.

We've played 2 very good passing offenses and the Broncos who are no walk in the park with Marshall/Royal so it's not like we haven't faced anybody.

The pass D is very much improved. Forget the #'s just watch some of the one on one plays our corners have made. Perhaps our best secondary since '03.

You can only beat who you've played. To say the passing defense hasn't improved immensely over the offseason is a stretch. Orton is playing some very good ball and it's not like Sanchez exactly tore us apart.

We've been given a chance to win every game we've been in. This next stretch is going to be interesting.

I'm pretty sure if we beat the Colts every thread on the forum will be related to how we're going to win the Super Bowl.

The difference between playing the Bucs and playing the Colts is that against the Bucs it's naive to just look at the final score and be happy, since beating them is hardly an achievement; against an elite team like the Colts all that matters is the W.

That's why I'm confused why so many of you are getting all huffy at any post that doesn't involve how great the team looked today. You think Belichick has that attitude in the locker room?

I will say that the anchor has been meriweather hands down.....I know it may be premature to say this but he is looking like polamalu more and more.....He is a ball hawk and will come up and knock your jock off....This guy is going to be really good in years to come for us in the secondary.....Butler is looking solid and must have some confidence from the coaching staff because they are putting him out there one on one coverage quite a bit.....This secondary if they can keep them all together I believe will be stellar in 2 years after working with each other....As of right now they are a lot better than past seasons.....

Where do we rank in overall points allowed?

Well, the right stat to look at is Points per Game, since we've played seven games and others have played six. We rank third by that measure, behind Denver and Indy.

In Total Yards allowed per Game, we rank sixth (behind NYG, Denver, GB, Philly and Carolina)

In Passing Yards allowed per Game, we rank fifth (behind Carolina, NYG, Washington and GB)

In Rushing Yards allowed per Game, we rank 17th.

I'm not sure people appreciate how ridiculous the Saints (and Colts) offense has been.

like the Pats in 2007, even good defenses can't stop those teams. holding them to 21 would be a victory for our or any defense.

Meriweather is no doubt the anchor back there and he is playing some really nice ball right now as someone predicted in TC he might make a push for the pro bowl:D

No offense but Brees and Manning are going to light every team up this year. Brees did it to the Giants who have one of the top 3 defenses in the NFL

We will give up points in these games. Probably a lot of em. The key to both is stopping the run so they cant be balanced, playing tight to Colston and Wayne and most importantly having our offense manage the clock

Right now, with our running game the way it is I cant see us doing that

Where we are as a team right now I think we struggle in both but later in the year with Taylor and Morris back and Brady back to where he was it may well be different

Um, no, they don't. The giants defense is "above average" at best.

IMO the Kenny Phillips loss was a huge one for the G'ints. He had a nice rookie year last year. Canty was inactive last night too. So was Aaron Ross.

They have problems.

Where did I say that every win should involve a parade? I certainly don't think that. However, if we only manage to beat the Colts by one point, there certainly will be threads in here criticizing different parts of the team. If it's a 35-34 victory, people will call for Dean Pees' head. It's a fact. By the way, I've said myself a few times since yesterday that I'm happy that the team won, but that they did not look good at times doing it and have stated what I've seen.

Merriweather IMO has been our best player overall this year. Rodney last night said that he is THE safety right now in the NFL. Dungy looked at him like :wha:

What about 3rd down percentage conversions allowed? That's one of the biggest stats to me for a defense. Can they stop the offense from moving the chains on 3rd down?

Subjectively speaking though, this secondary has looked a lot better than last season in most of the games. Then again some of the teams we've played haven't been very impressive. Fully expected to beat the titans and bucs soundly.

the defense, especially the secondary, has made more big plays in the first 7 games than they did all last season. outside of the Denver game they've been great on 3rd down, and when the secondary went up against ATL and Baltimore they held those offenses to a combined 24 points.

Pats defense is tied for 11th in 3rd down pct at 36%, not bad. Lots of teams bunched up in the 30s. Broncos are first at 27%. Last year the Pats were an embarrassing 44% in 3rd down defense, which was 5th worst in the league.

14th in the NFL allowing 36% conversion rate. Respectable IMO.

Lots of good #s in for the pass D....

5th in fewest +20 yard gains...
13th in passing TDs allowed..
12th in comp yds ave.
2nd in FFs (secondnary only)
7th in INTs
7th in passed- defensed

The litmus test is Indy and NO....We'll see how really good they are then.
