Week Three, Falcons at Patriots

Welcome to the board!

Yup, the gap between the NFC and AFC has closed. The NFC East has been good for a while and the NFC South is usually very good too - but rarely gets noticed due to none of those teams being in the biggest metroploitan areas, or having several years of success.

Where exactly is your job going to be? Reason I ask is that Worcester or Shrewsbury to Boston is a lot longer of a commute than you're going to want to make every day.

Are you the resident "expert pics and spread/lines" poster on this board? Some great info you posted in your last few threads. Some guys on the Atlanta board have their "jobs" every week where we can always count on them doing their thing, I was curious if this is yours. :)
Seems like earlier in the week I was seeing more Atlanta pics, but way more leaning towards NE as the week goes on. Unless we only posted the ones in favor of ATL on our boards.:D

Thanks for asking jmt. It's an outside sales job so my territory will be MA, NH, ME, VT, RI, and part of NY. A lot of business in Boston metro, so my boss thought the Worcester area might be a good spot to check out first, plus we have good friends in Shrewsbury.
Any other suggestions? Good schools and family neighborhoods with reasonable priced housing are important.
How long does it take to/from Shrewsbury to Boston, considering daily commuter time?
If anyone else has any suggestions too I would sure appreciate a PM to get this stuff out of the thread

I see us playing 4-3 cover 3 or 4, more likely 4 with the occasional FS motion down. I believe we will dare Atlanta to run.

Gonzalez has been handled well by the Patriots in his career, only getting one touchdown, although he has gotten around 450 yards vs. Pats..

Weather is calling for rain- so I hope that will be an incentive to break out the running game big time. I think that is what we need to do more than anything, even more than seeing Brady snap back to normal. Getting our running game going is the best deterrent to so much energy being focused in collapsing the pocket or getting to Brady.

I would hope we start with that and then worry about abusing their secondaries later on.

Turner has been a slow starter running the ball so far. In the few series he played in pre-season against starters, he was a beast (the key being pre-season of course). But he wasn't too effective against Miami and Carolina. He kept getting chances in the Carolina game and finally started making it happen, but we were also leading so he got his carries.

If The Pats are running all over us (and I can see that happening unfortunately) and we get down early I don't know if ATL will start passing if it's raining, or if they'll keep going to Turner and Snelling to try and establish some sort of run game. ATL has been solid on 3rd down with Ryan getting us out of some tough spots and also keeping drives going, so I can see us keep pounding the ball, try to control the clock and get the running game established wearing down the Pats, but having to be bailed out on 3rd down by Tony G. or the big man Brian Finneran early on.

If it's dry, ATL is balanced, probably 50/50 pass/rush attempts, but have been much more effective passing.

Views from Atlanta

Here's a couple columns from the Falcons' team web site on Sunday's game, with their viewpoint of the Pats and the matchup.

Patriots Present 'Multiple' Defenses
The Patriots may be 1-1 on the young season, but the defense is third in the NFL in total offense allowed (265 yards per game) and sixth in football against the pass. Belichick’s depth chart looks like a traditional 3-4 (three linemen and four linebackers) but Falcons Head Coach Mike Smith expects New England to show a bit of everything in Sunday’s game.

“They’re very multiple,” he said. “When you look at them, two of their games in the preseason were basically all 3-4 and two of them were 4-3. They’ve been mixing up the 3-4 and the 4-3 in the regular-season games.”

Smith singled-out Patriots linemen Vince Wilfork and Ty Warren, who are a combined 625 pounds as keys to his opponents defense. The pair has combined for 18 tackles and one sack so far in the season but their size and versatility allow New England to be flexible on defense.

The Patriots also have a long list of qualified linebackers/defensive ends including Adalius Thomas and Derrick Burgess.

“They are a very disciplined football team,” Smith said. “They don’t give up a lot of big plays. They’re where they’re supposed to be and they’re very gap sound and they make you earn everything you get. You’re not going to catch them by getting them out of position; you’re going to have to earn everything. That’s why for the first eight years of this century they’re one of the best teams in the NFL.”

Falconcast: Patriots Preview
Never underestimate the importance of coaching in the NFL. For starters, coaches draw up the game plans that break down opponents’ weaknesses.

They also make sure their team is focused and ready to play.

Especially on the road.

One thing remarkable about the Falcons coaching staff is how consistent they are from week-to-week. Little changes around Flowery Branch from Monday to Friday, to home game to road game. There’s a relaxed focus that fills the building and players have fun going about their work.

And, at the end of the week, they feel prepared to play.
Sounds familiar, doesn't it? He then goes on to say the keys to the game are to get pressure on Brady and to rely heavily on Michael Turner.

In case you're curious, here's the message board on their team site.

I may be being very pessimistic, but I'm heading into this game with less confidence than any other game in years. Maybe even less than last year's matchup with Pittsburgh and Cassel at QB. If we pull this game out I'll be ecstatic.

Falcons GM Dimitroff follows Patriots' blueprint

Falcons GM Dimitroff follows' Patriots blueprint by the AP via FoxSports.
Thomas Dimitroff hesitates to give the New England Patriots too much credit for his success as general manager in Atlanta.

After all, nobody on New England's payroll was responsible for the Falcons' decisions to hire coach Mike Smith, draft quarterback Matt Ryan and sign running back Michael Turner.

And did the Patriots trade Tony Gonzalez to Atlanta?

Well, not directly.

But it was Kansas City GM Scott Pioli, Dimitroff's former boss in New England, who dealt the NFL's career-leading tight end to the Falcons for a second-round draft pick in 2010.
"It's probably safe to say No. 88 wouldn't be playing for us," Dimitroff said Thursday.
Atlanta has won 13 of 19 games during Dimitroff's tenure, and he believes a victory Sunday would lend more credibility to a Falcons organization trying this year to achieve consecutive winning seasons for the first time in the franchise's 44-year history.

"If anything, for me, it's more about us going in there and proving that we can compete at a high level," Dimitroff said. "For us, it's going to be sort of playing the benchmark organization and seeing how we fare against a historic program."
Dimitroff plans to shake hands with Belichick, whose success represents everything the Falcons want to become, before the game.

"It's not going to be the forum to have a lengthy conversation, obviously," Dimitroff said, "but it is special in the sense that you see how time flies in where I was a number of years ago and where I'm sitting now."

And the media obsession with handshakes continues.

Even less than week two last year?

Even less than week two last year?

Yes I would say. Cassel looked pretty good against KC the week before and I knew JMD would make things easy for him. Jets offense was not in sync yet.

Last week Brady looked poor when flustered and we had no adjustments for what the Jets were bringing on D. Ryan/Turner/White will be tough to stop. Could be a long day....

True, but keep in mind the Falcons defense is not remotely close to being as good as the Jets defense.

Maybe week two wasn't the best example for me to compare with this one; what about after the first game against Miami last year, or after the Chargers game? I felt there was a lot more pessimism after either of those two games last year.

Defense wasn't our problem last week. It was the offense's uncharacteristic failure to convert in the red zone in the first half.

Miami caught me completely off guard, going into that game I didn't expect much. After the Chargers who'd we play, Denver? I guess going into that game I didn't feel too well. I have full faith we'll be fine by the end of the season I just hope we don't lose too much ground with this tough early schedule while finding our stride.

I know, the defense IMO performed admirably last week. But the Jets aren't the Falcons offensively.

MATCHUPS TO WATCH
WR Wes Welker vs. DBs Chevis Jackson, Chris Owens & Brent Grimes

Hard to say who will line up in the slot on Sunday. Welker is still questionable. But with the speed and agility of Welker the Falcons may slide equally athletic cornerback Brent Grimes into coverage. Tom Brady looks to him as his security blanket and 3rd down option. Whoever draws Welker will have their work cut out for them.

LT Matt Light vs. DE John Abraham

This will be a very interesting battle to watch. Abraham was held sackless last week and will be looking for his 6th sack against Brady. Matt Light is a Pro-Bowl tackle and will look to keep that from happening. This could answer the question of which will prevail: The immovable object or the unstoppable force.

DB Leigh Bodden vs. WR Roddy White

White has yet to put up a 100 yard receiving game and this week could be his best chance. Bodden is a solid veteran but no real match against the budding star White. If Ryan has time to follow his reads, expect to see White have

NOT THEM AGAIN

Patriots receiver Joey Galloway left the NFC South only to face the Falcons once again. These two are very familiar with one another. With the possibility of limited play from Welker expect to see him targeted quite often. He's not quite as fast as he once was but he's still a very viable deep threat for Tom Brady and his run and gun offense. He will draw newly aquired corner Brian Williams.

I received a few PM's from my earlier question, but until I have 15 posts here, I'm not allowed to send any PM's. So....thanks for the info to those who sent me a message. Much appreciated!

Falcons defensive line sets fast pace

Falcons defensive line sets fast pace by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution

The hurry-up Birds are in a one-gap scheme — no peering to either side of a blocker to protect two gaps — and they charge through that gap. Maybe they pause long enough on some plays to chip a guard to keep him off a linebacker, but mostly they are marauders creating havoc in the backfield.

“Coach [Ray Hamilton, defensive line coach] told me when I got here with this scheme, you’ll think you died and went to heaven,” said tackle Thomas Johnson.

Through two games, the fast and furious Falcons have five sacks and have been a crutch for a rebuilt secondary that might, or might not be, the weakness of the defense. It’s hard to tell.

Miami’s Chad Pennington and Carolina’s Jake Delhomme did not get much time to find the soft spots, even when the Panthers left a tight end and running back behind to provide a seven-man protection.

The Falcons are playing with an eight-man rotation along the line, essentially four players to play two spots. The defensive ends are Abraham, Kroy Biermann, Jamaal Anderson, and Chauncey Davis, and the tackles are Jonathan Babineaux, Thomas Johnson, and Vance Walker and they have been disruptive enough to help the Falcons force six turnovers in two games.

Seems to me the best way to counter this defense is by running the ball in those gaps vacated by defensive lineman looking to get after Brady. Then if they slow down and honor the run hit them with a play-action pass down the sidelines on a typical running down to take advantage of their biggest weakness, their cornerbacks.

Falcons CB gameplan: jam Pats WR's at the line of scrimmage

Falcons CB Brian Williams reveals that Atlanta plans to try to jam the Patriots receivers at the line of scrimmage in order to disrupt the timing on their routes. Sounds like an opportunity for one of the Pats receivers to make a move at the LOS and be wide open down the sideline.

Williams holds key to stopping Moss by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Q: What are some of the things you have to really be on top of when facing New England quarterback Tom Brady?
A: First of all, we have to get some pressure on him and disrupt the timing of the receivers by being physical with them with jams and getting our hands on them.

Q: Were the Jets able to do that to them last week? Did they give you all a blueprint on some things to do that might work?
A: I wouldn't necessarily say it was a blueprint, but they won the game. They got a little bit of pressure on [the Patriots]. They played a good game, but it's a whole different week. I'm sure they'll prepare for what they think is coming at them.

Q: When you were with Jacksonville, you faced Brady in the AFC playoffs after the 2007 season. Do you remember much from that game?
A: They kept the chains moving. We couldn't get off the field and they ended up winning. [31-20, with Falcons coach Mike Smith calling the defensive signals as Jaguars defensive coordinator].

Alright. Prediction time.

For one of the few times in my life, I am optimistic about the Falcons ability. That uncharted optimism is how I am coming to my prediction today. I have the score along with a few player predictions, etc.

Score- Falcons 34 Patriots 23 (although the game will seem a lot closer than the final score would indicate)

Falcons 4 TD's, 2 FG's
Patriots 2 TD's. 3 FG's

Michael Turner has a big day, going for over 100 yards and 2 scores.

Gonzalez goes for over 60 yards receiving and a score.

The defense for the Falcons continues their bend but dont break style, forcing the Pats to settle for 4 field goal attempts instead of TD's. Gostkowski makes 3 of the 4.

Brady throws for just under 300 yards, but cant seem to get it done in the redzone. He gets sacked twice, and on one of them he fumbles. He throws no picks, but isnt quite back to being Brady yet with his accuracy. Solid day by other QB's standards, but not stellar.

Moss scores one of the TD's on a 40-60 yard play.

Abraham will get one sack and the forced fumble.

Pats rushing by committee gets just under 160 yards on the ground.

So thats it. Feels weird to be optimistic, but thats how I feel right now and I am not going to fight it.

Been fun hangin on this site for a week. I will come back after the game or Monday to eat crow or give thoughts and disappear.

The 23 part was close, though we could have put up 42+ points easily if Brady had been on his game. And Welker was out.

As I said earlier in this thread, our defense is very underrated right now. Very athletic and fast, and also very young, with some key people injured. We pretty much shut you down today, with Mayo out, Meriweather not 100%, Butler and Wilhite out, and Wilfork injured for over half the game. Once this defense gets healthy and gels, it has the potential to be scary good - the best since the 2003 SB team. If the offense gets in sync at the same time, then look out.

We're still a work in progress, and I expect some more ups and downs until we get healthy and fully in sync. But the potential is there for something special come December and the postseason.

Thanks for visiting on the board. We enjoyed have intelligent discussion and analysis with folks from other teams, instead of the usual trolling. Good luck with the rest of your season - you have a talented young team, and they will get better from this. With Dimitroff and Smith running the show and Matty Ice at QB, you are in good shape for the long term.

Getting this one over with.

Overall great game for the Pats. Beat the Falcons. Played harder. Controlled the ball. Kept our offense off the field. Took away Turner by keeping the ball the entire 3rd quarter.

Was right about some things. Wrong about others.

Did force the Pats to kick field goals once they hit the redzone. Deep plays were most of the TD's.

Turner didnt have a big day. Ran well early. Had the tough fumble. As mentioned before...Pats offense took him away in the 2nd half. Did have the one score.

Gonzalez was a non factor. Wont know why until I break down film. Saw him open several times...not sure why Ryan didnt go his way.

Our Dline was the main reason we lost the game. No pressure. Not sure what it takes to get a holding call in Foxboro. Abe got raped consistently and the refs didnt blink. Cant blame the refs for the loss, but they sure didnt help us with the PI on Jenkins that would never have been called on Moss, and the forced challenge early that could have hurt us if we needed that challenge later. That ball was on the ground for 3 seconds and the refs were still clueless. Either they were dumb or having a little homecookin. As I said though, you dont blame this loss on the refs. You rarely can, and teh Falcons did enough to beat themselves.

So, Abe didnt have a big day. He was irrelevant. I will know more when I break down film, but on first look, it was only partially his fault. I counted 6 plays he was held solidly on and didnt get the flag once. If the o-line has free reign to hold, no one is going to have a big day. He still disappeared, even when not held.

Brady was as expected. He made enough plays but still didnt look like the Brady of old. Seemed very inaccurate and refused to plant that foot, despite having no pressure on 90% of the passing plays. He didnt throw any picks, as expected. It makes me wonder about his long term greatness going forward.

Great gameplan by the Pats of playing keep away. I thought in the 2nd quarter the Falcons showed they were going to have a big day offensively. After that they simply didnt have the ball enough to get anything going. Props to the Pats D for stepping up.

Basically, Belichick and his staff gave the Falcons nothing, and took from us everything (well, almost everything, the refs took some too, but what are you gonna do on the road).

As JSn predicted, I am headed out looking for dinner. I didnt like several key plays in the game. The Turner fumble was the play of the game. Also, didnt like the 3rd and 2 play call in the redzone early to go to shotgun that they didnt convert...and took Turner off the field in the process. Didnt like rolling out Ryan to the right so often. It took away 1/2 the field, and the Pats scheme is too smart for that and didnt give Ryan anywhere to throw the ball. Poor calls by Mularkey. The wildcat was unnecessary. We punted multiple times when I think a great coach would have felt the urgency to go for it. Instead, the game was over with 8 minutes left and there was nothing Ryan or the offense could do about it.

I still feel well about our team, knowing where we were 13 months ago staring at a possible 0-16 season. We go into the bye with a B grade from me so far. When the schedule came out, I saw 0-3 as a possibility, 1-2 as likely, 2-1 as a very good start, and 3-0 as nothing short of a miracle. Going into today, we had a shot at the miracle, so I dont feel too bad about it. Two things really bother me...I fear our run D was exposed even further, and the film from the first 3 games wont help us win games. The lack of pressure vs the Pats was disheartening as well...so both of my worst feelings are mostly resting on the d-line.

Anyway, I could probably make this one post 3 pages long, but I will stop now. Its been fun bantering here this week and I hope I have represented the Falcons fan base well.

Good luck to you guys later this season, especially vs our NFC counterparts, especially NFC South. We will need the help being that the Aints look great and I expect the Panties to get back on decent track to compete for the wildcard. Right now, I see the Falcons as being a wildcard team. Deep down I just want back to back winning seasons...as that will make me feel like this is a different Falcons team than I have watched my whole life.

Thanks. And I agree...I forgot to mention in my long writeup that I noticed on a couple of early trips to the redzone, that if Welker had been in the slot, we would have been down a couple of TD's early, and you guys would have won by 4 TD's. I dont have a doubt about that.
