Speaking of TiVo. I got a TiVo and HDTV early on in 2001. Pats are in the playoffs vs the Raiders and my wife informs me that we have a 6 months pre-scheduled dinner date with good neighbors who'd moved away. I decided to go since I wanted to be with a woman in that way again before dying. Being Brits, they had no interest in football. I set the TiVo and drove out to dinner despite the bad snowstorm. Despite their Americanized 10 yr old son watching the game in another room I kept myself away from the TV but did hear that it was in the 2nd half and the Pats were down by 10 or something. Drove home thru the wicked snowstorm and yes, I went to bed figuring I'd get rest and watch it start to finish in the morning not knowing the outcome. I'm sleeping, the phone rings and my new son-in-law, an MIT guy who'd never followed football before meeting my daughter the Patriots fan is screaming, "They won! They WON!!!" Obviously I went downstairs cranked up the TiVo and watched the game and postgame late into the early morning hours.

Hey, look at it this way: it's the price you pay for having a son-in-law from MIT! It could be worse, you can have a son-in-law from Ringling Bros. College.

Last year I took my non-football watching father-in-law to that 70mph winds Bills-Patriots game before Christmas. I gave him my ski gear, and he thought it was neat sitting in great seats among a bunch of drunken rowdy teetering on the verge of violence football fans. I was surprised that the mid 60s year old guy liked his first game since Ralph Wilson in 70 mph winds is not the ideal place to pop your cherry.

Try 4pm on the west coast. :(

Usually having games on earlier is great, just not 4pm on a Monday ...

That's a good story.

I drive my wife crazy during football season, making sure she doesn't book something when there's a game. Years ago she'd give me crap with lines like, "You're picking *football* over friends we haven't seen in a while?" and I'd respond with, "Yup. Let's go to dinner with them after the game or have them over Saturday instead. *You know the rules.*" Now she still rolls her eyes, but knows how I am.

In January, if she tries and sets up a dinner on a Saturday night with friends, I tell her the Pats might be playing so hold off on plans until I know more. The Sunday thing she learned. The Saturday in January thing she's still kinda peeved at.

Regards,
Chris

Even worse, I don't have cable!!!!

I make do in other ways: over the air HDTV, Slingbox, Netflix, sports bars.

I have no use for cable, and when things are on ESPN, I watch SlingboxHD or go to a Sports Bar.

In four years of doing this, I have never had a problem.

I guess there's a first time for everything.

I highly recommend getting a TiVo is you do OTA HD. And not a no-name generic DVR, and actual TiVo. You can get a TiVo HD for like $200 or something. But you can feed in the antenna signal and record that on the DVR. I swear, I have cable and 90% of the stuff I record is OTA signals (which are much better than cable HD).

Plus, you can get Amazon Video on Demand, Netflix Watch Instant, and other stuff through your TiVo. Not only that, if you are so technically inclined you can use it to stream video off your home PC onto your TV. :)

Thanks for the tip. I'lld ef. look into this, although we're already streaming from our TV. We have a ROKU device, but we aren't recording. I suppose I have the capability of doing that already with some online software but just haven't done it.

Still this game is on ESPN so TIVO without cable doesn't help me. I get all my ESPN for free on my TV through Slingbox, but that means I can't record it.

Is this a permanent thing with the MNF start time being bumped back an hour? I hope so because in my time zone (Atlantic), the game normally starts at 9pm. By the time the game is done it's closer to 12:30am. Not too fun when you have too get up early the next morning.

Only on the first Monday night of the season. As someone mentioned above, they now do a double-header on the first Monday night, with the first game being an East Coast contest starting at 7:00 p.m. EST, and the 2nd game being a West Coast game starting around 10:00 p.m. EST. I've actually stayed up to watch the 2nd game the last few years as I can never get enough NFL football. I wish all the Monday night games started at 7:00 p.m. too, but it will revert to 8:30 p.m. next week.

I have a slingbox because I travel so much. I hate hotel wireless. I missed seeing a few games over the years because the Slingbox is not bandwidth friendly. Watching the game on my cell phone requires reading glasses, but it works in a pinch.

I'd rather it be on at 4PM on the West Coast than getting over after midnight when I'm out East. They east coast should revolt! It's particularly bad when you want to watch a 7PM night game that starts at 10PM back east.

When I lived on the west coast I hated MNF starting at 6:00 PM. It was still light out. Many times I hadn't even had dinner yet. The only thing worse was Sunday games that started at 10 AM. Blech, I'm so glad to be back in NE. And I've never seen a game start at 10 PM.

I *love* the 10am starts. Always have, even when I was in my 20s. Wake up, go watch the game, then have the rest of the day to get stuff done.

I guess it's just what you are use to you.

I grew up in MA with plenty of Pats football on Sunday at 1pm. Give me the 10am starts every time.

I love the 7pm kick off time, much rather have the game start at midnight than at 1:30 am over here.

Yah, that's where my Sunday football standing rule failed. Back in September, I did not anticipate the 0-2 2001 Pats with Bledsoe injured being in a playoff game on Saturday night in Jamuary. My bad.

This has been corrected since.

Back in '98? I saw the Pats playoff game way EARLY in the morning in Maui, Hawaii. The one where Zolak played and we got smoked.

8am is too early.

When I was in Hawaii in October 2000, the local ABC affiliate showed the MNF game twice: Live (4pm start), then replayed immediately after.

WE HAVE A WINNER

I might be wrong, but I'd bet the farm that is the first time anyone ever used the word "onomatopeiac" on this board.

Takes me back to my days with the Jesuits at BC High.

You spelled onomatopoeiac incorrectly.

Put out your hand, I'm getting my ruler.

I don't mind as I am going to this game and it will cause the game to end an hour and a half earlier, and I have a two hour drive to get home, and I have to work early the next morning. So I am very happy about the game being at 7 pm :D
