Patriots trading Richard Seymour to the Raiders!!!

Could you let me know how becoming the best in the business and a Hall of Fame caliber player at 3-4 defensive end is somehow not reaching his potential?

If the deal had been done in reverse, Patriots fans would be laughing their asses off at Davis for trading the best 3-4 D-lineman in the game, who's only turning 30 in October, for a pick 2 years down the road.

I'm not sure I agree with any of those statements.

While Seymour is a great player, he's not the best DE in the league. I don't think he will make the HOF, and I certainly wouldn't laugh if roles were reversed. I'd be furious if I was watching a rebuilding team and they traded away a 1st rounder for a near 30 year old, soon to be FA. HORRIBLE trade on the Raiders part, regardless of how people feel on the Patriots side.

I'm waiting a few days before I gather an angry mob complete with torch and pitchfork. Right now, this trade makes us worse. Great, we're set for the drafts in 2010 and 2011, but we can't suit up a piece of paper that says 2011 draft pick and have it eat up two blockers per play for this season.

I just have a hard time grasping the idea that we are looking past today (something every winning coach is known to not do). Unless Burgess is friggin' magical and he was hustlin' everyone who watched him play this preseason, we're in trouble now. Green is hot garbage, and if Seymour isn't a suitable DE in the 4-3, there is no way Warren is.

The Patriots were 8-0 without Seymour in 2007.

They'll be fine.

It's true Seymour was a beast, but in a 4-3, the beast of 2009 will be Vince Wilfork.

I still like the deal. It was all about value. Every player needs to be measured on his production (tangible and intangible) as it relates to his salary. Seymour was slightly overpayed, in my view.

Now it's okay to have some slightly overpayed or flat out overpaid players on your team, if they happen to play at a much-needed position. Looking at the Pats' situation: we see a deep defensive line, coupled with a slightly overpayed player who is going to be gone in 2010 anyway. Then we also see a situation where two other valuable players (Mankins and Wilfork) need to be extended or signed beyond 2010. We also see a change in the defensive system where more 4-3 alignments will be played. In addition, a perennially poor performing team offers you their first rounder in 2011.

If you take in all the facts, the trade had to be made; in fact, BB would have been crazy not to have orchestrated it.

"The winds of Change" are certainly blowing through Patriots Nation.....

I see both sides like many posters have discussed.

Richard Seymour: A pro's pro. Thank you for all the great seasons and Godspeed!

I didn't really need another reason to root against the Hated Raiders, but here's to them going 0-16 in 2010!

The youth movement is in full swing for the Patriots!

If you want to run a successful team in this league, you have to make hard moves and always have one eye on the future. I'd rather the Pats be in contention for a Super Bowl every year for the next 10 years than flame out, rebuild, contend for 2-3 seasons, flame out, rinse and repeat.

#2 - I'm afraid it hurts 09-10... Deion NOT being there to catch the ball in the endzone against Indy still stings a bit (I know, can't play "what ifs") - but we DID get great value for Branch.
Branch's NOT being there was HIS doing..and one ONLY has him to blame for his NOT being with the team. What if..what they signed him for the bucks he wanted?? ANd I wonder what would have happened had they given in?? They may not have even gotten CLOSE that year..I mean WHO KNOWS!! so don't go that route of what ifs...for there are more than just the one presented..

Well, you and I clearly come from different football worlds. Have a nice day!

As for it being a horrible trade for the Raiders, I'll assume you're pulling everyone's leg.

Say what you will about whether this was a good move from the Patriots' perspective, but I don't understand this at all from the Raiders' point of view. I mean, good lord, what were they thinking!?

Take away the Patriots part and just look at it from a Raiders PoV, and it's horrendous. I don't care if they made this trade with any other team in the NFL, it would be horrible regardless. If you're rebuilding, you *don't* trade a 1st rounder (especially when it's likely a high 1st) for a 29 year old player who has one year left on his contract.

I think it's a horrible trade for the Raiders. I think it would be a great trade if they were anywhere close to competitive, but they're not. I think a draft pick would've been a greater asset to them than a 30-year-old DL, since he'll definitely be on the downside of his career by the time they even revert to an 8-8 type of team.

As bad as the Raiders are, look at that division. Do you see, of the three teams not named the Chargers, a team that would win 4 games if they are in our division?

With Seymour as an anchor, that defense might suck less than the Chefs and Ponies.

Not to mention he'll likely be off the team by the time they hit .500. They spent a 1st rounder for a chance to possibly hit .500 one season.. great move Raiders.

Long term this is a good deal. You get a potentially high first round pick for someone who would have been with a different team next season. Plus, there is the chance that 2011 will bring a rookie cap to the draft, which would make a high first round pick even more valuable.

Obviously, this could be a bad deal this year. They have the depth to absorb Seymour's loss. However, it's not possible to replace the player of his caliber in short order. I'd like to think that they'll be okay this season, but I prefer wearing my Pats' colored glasses. So, the short term impact really remains to be seen...

Truth. As unsure as I am of this trade from the Pats' standpoint, there's pretty much no upside from the Raiders'. They gave up a first round pick in 2011 for... 1 year of Richard Seymour? If they'd locked him up long-term, that would make sense, but knowing that he's going to walk in a year makes it beyond dumb. Honestly, I'd put the odds of him coming back and signing with the Pats higher than him sticking with the Raiders (obviously neither will actually happen).

Whoa... easy... I said they got good value for Branch. I was just wondering out loud if he makes a difference in the playoffs that year - since we were short in WR talent.

I never said they should have paid him. But sometimes keeping someone a year "too long" and losing them leads to key wins. Also - mentioned the whole "what if" dilemma.

Yikes.

Anyhoo, hope Seymour's absence isn't the difference in THIS season's outcome. But I DO like the value.

in Bill i still trust perhaps the pick goes to someone else this year or next

In all liklihood in my opinion, something was going on behind scenes with Seymour. Someone mentioned today that Seymour went to the patriots and said either give me an extension today or trade me. I obviously have no way of confirming this though.

Well this could mean only one thing...

A PEPPERS DEAL IS IN THE WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

If there was one team other than the Redskins that I would predict to pay Seymour whatever he wanted, it would be the Raiders.
